Where's my Eek The Cat box set...?

It certainly is time. Well, mid-November, anyway. And my god it's loaded.

They want $180 for it!! Seems a bit of a rip-off, and by a bit, I mean a lot.

You're getting all 147 episodes spread out over twenty-five discs.  Considering most DVD season sets with four discs retail at $30 a pop, $180 would be about the norm.

Well, the thing is price is not a linear curve. It drops off as some power law, the more you purchase, the cheaper it is (typically). Furthermore, many complete sets these days are much cheaper than the $30 for 4 DVDs. As an example, I've seen the Buffy DVD set (40 disk) sell for $99 brand new on amazon! Currently it's about $180, but remember it's 40 DVDs. Also, lots of other sets have a similar amount of disks (25+) and sell for far less. Overall, it's not a horrible price, but I still think it's way too expensive. You're paying $7.20 per DVD. Could be the high price is due to licensing issues or who knows what, or maybe they're just trying to stick you! Still, if it's worth it to you, then you should be happy. I'll pass.

There's been a delay in getting the NA version of the Mysterious Cities of Gold (Les Mysterieuses Cites D'or) out here, but it is out now in the UK and apparently did very well over there.  They're just looking for a distributor here.

Also the article mentions the makers of this boxset are thinking about doing ones for Belle & Sebastian and Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea as well.

I'm totally waiting for the Mysterious Cities of Gold to come out for the American Market.  It is in the works, but no date has been set.  I want all the extras that the Europeans got as well (eg a soundtrack and a kinda' kickass reproduction of the Medallion that Esteban and Zia had. )

Other than that, I'd like to see the Pirates of Dark Water even though they never actually finished the series.  (*sniffles*)

I just saw this was being released....Wow, finally!  Expensive yes, but...perhaps I can netflix them first and see if they are as good as I remember....It's all about the first 97 episodes anyway.

I can't believe Christopher Titus' one man show "Norman Rockwell Is Bleeding" isn't on DVD. My friend burned this for me and I freakin' love it! I picked up the CD release however.

Also, I did nab The Mysterious Cities of Gold DVD boxset. 

There are still no Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis Blu-ray boxsets.  For some reason that I don't know of they have decided not to make any.  This angers me greatly.

I know they probably will, but I'll drop cash for a 24 Complete Series boxset (blu-ray of course - I don't think I'll buy anything on DVD anymore - unless it's something I can't avoid - like Doctor Who classic series releases.)

In case anyone else is interested, I recently found out they FINALLY released the Parker Lewis series on DVD!
Season 1 was released last year, and season 2 was released as recently as january of this year.
I ordered both box-sets immediately upon finding out 2 weeks ago, and season 2 just arrived on my doorstep.

Video and audio aren't that good, but I'll take anything just about now.

I ran into a DVD set of an old show I use to watch on TV the other week on the cheap at f.y.e. Does anyone remember an old cop show called The Commish?

The series ran from 1991-1996 and, like most cop shows, is rather typical. Still, I like how the show could be dramatic one moment, clever another, and funny the next. And really, Michael Chiklis (Ben Grimm/The Thing in the Fantastic Four, Detective Vic Mackey on The Shield) is perfectly cast as Tony Scali, the commissioner of the East Bridge police department. In fact, while he never won any awards for is performance, the series pretty much launched his career.

Like some of these boxes of old shows, I was worried the show didn't survive through the years, but I was pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, due to poor sales, only the first two seasons where released separately, the remaining seasons only available in the 17-disc full series set.

Still, a four disc set for a measly $13 and the show still works outside some of the haircuts? Sign me up.

Has anyone picked up any of the Nickelodeon Nicktoons releases? I've picked up a few and they've been hit and miss:

Rocko's Modern Life Season One:
Quite honestly, I had high hopes for Rocko emerging from the years of inactivity unscathed. I would be wrong. The show is still insanely clever yet I couldn't really get into it unless I was watching a top-tier episode like "Popcorn Pandemonium" and its awesome movie trailers.

Hey Arnold! Season 1
Hey Arnold! ended up receiving a little more attention than Rocko, but the yet the feeling that I couldn't quite remove all the cobwebs still prevailed. I will say I was surprised the show didn't come off as sugar-coated with it's morals like I thought it would although the Christmas episode is still heavy handed.

Angry Beavers Seasons 1 & 2
Things picked up a bit with the Angry Beavers. The set starts off well enough yet the material ends up a little divided mainly due to settings. Episodes that contain basic settings and more straightforward plots are better than those that go off into left field. Even so, some of the elements that make up Norb and Dag's world (like the cheesy black and white movies they watch) really bring this series home.

Aaahh!!! Real Monsters Season 1
This one was a real surprise. I thought Real Monsters would be at the receiving end of a world of hurt from being away so long. How wrong I was. The episodes rolled off the set's proverbial tongue quite well and it's amazing how relatable the characters and the world are despite being the mirror opposite of our own. I’m definitely looking forward to later seasons of this.

The only real negative I have to say about these sets is the new artwork used for the covers. It's a no-go. They may be the same characters but the style, details and accents clash with what I've come to know from these cartoons. Aside from that though I still feel these cartoons smoke what's being produced today - even from Nickelodeon themselves.

I don't think I'll be buying the Catdog set (I can really pass on it after the above) but definately plan on scooping up Danny Phantom when I see it.
