but... they want $1.4 million, because apparently you can do so little with a mere million these days?? Also, it looks like most everything is digital-only. So, although I would love to see a sequel (spiritual or otherwise) to Eternal Darkness, I will pass.

Nostalgia is fun, for sure, but my concern is that some of these projects are just cynical money grabs. Appealing to the nostalgia of twenty- and thirty-something geeks is a reliable tactic to attract crowdfunding (unless you're Jim Walls).
I don't suspect Cosmic Star Heroine of this, since Zeboyd is a known quantity, but I have doubts about the new River City Ransom campaign, for example.

A very fair concern. You just have to go by your gut instinct, and choose projects that seem genuine. Apparently here is one game that has, uh, problems after raising over $500,000!

I've already received a number of my kickstarter rewards, and have not been disappointed with any of them.

I was expecting Cosmic Star Heroine to blow past its funding goal, but pledges have petered out since the goal was met. I'm also surprised to see that the high-level funding tiers are massively unpopular. Credible projects like this one frequently attract pledges in the thousands of dollars.

It still has 14 days to go! It may still double or more it's pledge. Also, all three of the highest tiers have sold out.
Now, one of the reasons I'm not interested in this project (and perhaps this is why others may also not be pledging) is because of their lack of physical rewards. You need to pledge $350 to get an artbook. Really? you need that much just to publish a book?! Other similar projects offer art books at around $125. Not to mention that many projects also include a soundtrack as well as physical copy of the game! Also, they do not even mention whether this will be a hardback or softcover, which makes me think it will be a softcover and no word on size. So, you might pay $350 and get a 30-page softcover art book...big yip. I am of course hypothesising, but this lack of rewards and explanations is a turn-off for me at any rate.

This one has also gotten very little press compared to things like Mighty No. 9 and Shantae which both received almost daily press coverage on Twitter. Additionally, the creators aren't doing much to promote it compared to the well-oiled PR and social media efforts of Comcept and WayForward.

Only two guys doing the game, so kinda hard to drop same amount of promotion like Comcept or WayForward. But both are active on twitter (Zeboyd Games, Robert Boyd & B.Stiernberg.
And I wonder if that art book is at 350 dollar pledge because it's probably not so cheap to make it, + all the possible shipping etc. costs from it. But really can't wait to play the game, their earlier games have been stellar in my books.
