Wow, interesting poll system. Very cool!

1. Symphonic Shades - Hülsbeck in Concert
2. Sekaiju no MeiQ² *shoou no seihai* Original Soundtrack
3. Lost Odyssey Original Soundtrack
4. No More Heroes Dark Side
5. SoulCalibur IV Original Soundtrack
6. The Black Mages III Darkness and Starlight
7. The Last Remnant Original Soundtrack
8. Falcom jdk Band 2008 Spring

I answered a similar poll like this but with arranged and original scores split. This poll just reflects to me how much more interesting the arranged albums were than the original scores. There were so many great arranged albums to choose from but I really struggled to find a top spot for the original scores. Lots of good and great ones, but not much I thought was really outstanding. Symphonic Shades, No More Heroes Dark Side, and Falcom JDK Band 2008 were all stunning and creative productions though.

I cheated a little bit and postponed the poll deadline till early next week, so those of you who have yet to vote be sure to get those picks in! smile  Not to worry, the results will be tallied as planned.  (I'm taking a sneak peak at the early results right now actually.)

Here are my own overdue picks:

1. Macross Frontier OST 1
2. Macross Frontier OST 2
3. Nights ~Journey of Dreams~ Original Soundtrack
4. Metal Gear Solid 4 Original Soundtrack
5. Afrika Original Soundtrack
6. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix Official Soundtrack

I know I should be focusing on game soundtracks, but the themes that had the most impact for me over the course of the year came from Macross FrontierNights Journey of Dreams is a veritable exhibition on the "variations on a theme" style of composing - and a whole lot of fun in the process - while Metal Gear Solid 4 could make the list on cinematic effect and technical merit alone (though that's not all it has going for it).  Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD modernizes a classic soundtrack and made me a bona fide fan of the original in the process.

Close but no cigar:
-Gyakuten Saiban 2008 Orchestra Concert - Some genuinely fun arrangements on here but the suite tracks bore me.
-The Last Remnant OST - Take out a disc or so's worth of mundane filler and we have a contender.

Edit: The poll's long-expired by now but as I didn't get around to hearing Afrika OST till 2009, I'm retro-actively adding it to my picks. smile

1. Professor Layton and the Curious Village OST
What happened to Nishiura lately? I couldn't care less for his Dark Cloud soundtracks but Layton is pure gold. As if the chip sound itself wasn't enough the OST also treats us several delicious live arrangements, yum!

2. Armored Core: For Answer OST
Booting the AC:FA demo and hearing Someone is Always Moving on the Surface for the first time may have been my gaming moment of 2008. I surely wasn't expecting this from an Armored Core game. And it's not just this track, the OST is filled with memorable tracks that keep the same mood. Amazing.

3. Soma Bringer Original Soundtrack
Another one of those "what happened here" moments: a 3 disk Mitsuda soundtrack (almost) rivaling Trigger and Cross in quality compositions. Got loads of playtime this year as I dig just about every track. Judging from what I heard playing World Destruction (what's taking them so long to release an OST?) Mitsuda is back people.

4. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia OST
Best Castlevania soundtrack in a long while, an awesome supplement to an awesome game. So many memorable new songs, it's crazy!

5. Live Music by Piano and Strings: Sekaiju no MeiQ I & II Super Arrange Version
While the Sekaiju 2 arrange album failed to grab me, this more than made up for it. Once again shows the genius of Koshiro: his works can be rearranged into oblivion and still be interesting (just look at the plethora of Sekaiju doujin releases).

6. Sekaiju no MeiQ 2 Original Soundtrack
The original. Didn't grab me as much as the first but still pure quality.

7. Drammatica ~The Very Best of Yoko Shimomura~
I'm by no means a Shimomura fan, but this disc happens to contain all tracks I do like. Nice compilation with good (albeit very straightforward) arrangements.

8. Super Mario Galaxy OST
Wow, just wow. Most memorable first party Nintendo soundtrack in a long time. Love everything except the boss battles (boooooring).

Final remarks
Is it just me or was 2008 a year of extraordinary quality? Having lost interest over the past couple of years, 2008 brought my attention back to the marvels of video game music. I had a hard time putting this list together, even though I've had to miss out on some pretty big releases (build quite a backlog over the year).

oh and by the way, I restrained myself to VGM related material for this poll as I found it impossible to compare anime soundtracks to VGM (in terms of anime, Macross Frontier OST 2 is my pick for release of the year).

I'm really enjoying reading everyone's picks here, especially the ones with descriptions!  Not to mention taking notes for my next purchases big_smile

For the couple of you who listed Super Mario Galaxy OST (regular edition), is there a specific reason you picked it over the Platinum Version?  Should I tally the votes for both versions together?

Oops, forgot to mark my vote as the platinum version... As far as I know it is superior in every way to the normal version, so I'd just tally the votes together wink

I only picked the regular edition of Super Mario Galaxy OST because that's all I could find when I went to buy it. I listened to all the other tracks on YouTube though, and I would definitely count the two editions together as well.

All hail the Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack! I remember that I voted for three of those in the list which include the Mario soundtrack, Lost Odyssey and Fantasy Zone. smile

Where is the NiGHTS Journey of Dreams love though guys? smile

I finally got Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon after weeks of looking and the music on it is top quality. Would have voted for it if I knew and will definetly try to get the Soundtrack.

XISMZERO Jan 21, 2009

Just to clarify, are we judging the soundtrack of the game or the soundtrack release? If so, what if a soundtrack didn't get a release?

Adam, are these results weighted by order of preference or does it just add up total mentions?

I can't help but think that most of the people who didn't include that excellent soundtrack simply haven't heard it.  I suppose a lot of people would say that about their picks though.

XLord007 wrote:

The latter.  Weighted entries might be a feature for future polls but I didn't see the need for it in this one.

Well we were judging soundtrack releases although a couple people did choose non-released soundtracks in-game.  Will be sure to specify for future polls.

Mik Jan 31, 2009 (edited Jan 31, 2009)

I guess I'm too late for the poll, but here are my favourite game-related music albums of the year anyway (in no particular order):

Afrika Original Soundtrack
Battlefield Bad Company (FLAC soundtrack from werkshop.com)
Chrono Trigger Orchestra Extra Soundtrack
drammatica The Best of Yoko Shimomura
Echoes of War
Fable II Original Soundtrack
Infinite Undiscovery Original Soundtrack
Super Mario Galaxy Original Sound Track Platinum Version
Video Games Live Greatest Hits Volume One

Afrika in particular is surprisingly excellent.  It could easily be the soundtrack to a movie.  It's a sweeping orchestral score with some memorable themes.  Wataru Hokoyama is channeling vintage John Williams, yet still sounds original.  Great score.

I'm surprised Echoes of War and Video Games Live didn't make it in the short list in this poll.  Both are some of the best recordings of game music arrangements ever.  Very worth checking out.
