Looking at my new five-disc Okami OST, I was wondering: Are there any equal or larger single-game single-release OSTs?

By "single-game" I mean a set that is only for one game (so that rules out the 11-disc BOF collection) and by "single-release" I mean in one set (FF9 has five total OST discs but they are in two separate releases).

Thoughts?

Beats the F outta me. Doubtful, though.

How's the OST release?

the_miker Jun 5, 2006

Good question.  I'd say Okami would be the winner as far as I know.

I'll let you know once I get through it.  I'm working on FFXII now.

Can't think of any other 5-disc OST equivalents or more at the moment, no, but wow.... it's probably a safe assumption that this is as complete as an OST is going to get, as evidenced by even the presence of the short four to seven second ditty tracks.  I mean, they even have the "Okami!" title voice at the beginning!

How about that gorgeous packaging, too?

Composers are Capcom/Clover Studios' Masami Ueda and Hiroshi Yamaguchi, T Music's Rei Kondoh, and one Akari Groves. Gave the first disc a listen, and it's very much in the same spirit as the demo music; heavily drenched in traditional Japanese, with lots of koto, taiko drums, Kabuki chants, and wind instruments akin to panflutes and the shinobue.  The style of compositions throws out a wide net, from the serene and mystical, to war-torn pulsing battling, doofy and playful, and epic and adventurous.  I like how they handled "Kamiki Village," by splitting the two musical parts into two separate tracks that bleed into each other.

I put together a medley sample from a handful of tracks on disc 1, and put it up on YouSendIt, just so people can get a feel of what the music's about.  Personally, I'm absolutely delighted with it so far, and it makes waiting for the game all the more painful.

The description piqued my interest, but the sample let me down. Oh well.

Chrono Trigger is only 3 discs.  I am DYING to get hold of the Okami soundtrack, as there are very few soundtracks out there that have as blatantly traditional Japanese style as it does.  And yes, I like that sort of thing.  Then again, that might be expected, considering I'm living here and all.  tongue

I swear there's gotta be some anomalous six disc set out there or something, but I can't think of anything right now...

HamandSushi Jun 6, 2006

I was expecting something rather stuffy, but sophisticated.  Kabuki-esque.  But this is like the exact opposite.  All the samples had the potential to be really great, but they're a bit too simplistic.  More instruments, more diverse rythyms, and less focus on the melody would have been nice.

I can't think of something that beats 5 discs for a single release. About 7 years ago, I saw a 6 disc set at Game Cave, but it was probably a compilation of Son May discs or something. I think it was for Lunar.

I can't think of 5+ disc sets.  4-CD sets are the ones I have seen.

The Memories Off (SCDC-00107~12) and Memories Off 2nd (SCDC-00300~6) Complete Boxsets are both 6 Discs each. However, assuming they each comprise a single game, there are still a lot of vocal tracks, karaoke tracks, and character voices, so when you get down to BGM, it's still less than Okami.

Then there's Grand Theft Auto Vice City (7 Discs) and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (8 Discs) if anyone really wants to count those.

I should probably listen to it at least a few more times before coming to a real conclusion, but for now, I'm going to label the Okami OST as "good, but not great."

American Nightmare Jun 18, 2007 (edited Jun 18, 2007)

I just got this "complete" 5-disc set the other day, and after listening to disc 5, I noticed that there is only 35 minutes of music on this disc, while the other discs have at least 72 minutes of music, and dammit,  I'm thinking about contacting Capcom to issue a formal complaint.  Couldn't they have filled up that space with some wolf farts or something?!?! Sheesh!

Does the FF11 one count, since technically all of the expansions are part of one same game.

If it does, that comes to six discs worth of "OST" music, since disc seven is a piano collection. The unreleased tracks, of course, are OST-ish.

FFIX would be up there if the cut scene tracks on PLUS were included on the main OST.

Bernhardt Jun 19, 2007

Wild Arms V gets 6 discs, but that's 3 discs in 2 installments.

No damn way I'm going through all that music by myself without playing the game...

I like traditional Japanese music, but I've sampled the first disc, and...well, I'm just going to have to see how it's used in-game.

You're not alone there... I though it was pretty hard digesting the four discs for Wild Arms 4 outside the game as well.

lordskylark Jun 19, 2007

Just a thought... If some game soundtracks looped their tracks intead of having them only play through once, some OSTs would have been quite a bit bigger as well.

Hmm, then maybe a better comparison would be how many unique tracks there are. Although considering what others have said is included on the Okami OST, that probably still beats out everything else.

TerraEpon Jun 20, 2007

Yeah, but that's not nessesarily an indicator. Zelda OOT has 87 tracks (or something), yet even if looped twice it wouldn't fit a full 2CDs, yet FFVIII also has about the same amount of tracks, and is easily 180% the length looped Zelda OOT would be.

In the cases of the Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy VII OSTs, they consist of more discs than their respective games do; that shouldn't be the case. They looped each track TOO many times, if you ask me. Final Fantasy X OST also had some pretty long track times.

What a ridiculously idiotic and stupid comment.

1. I agree
2. Only if you meant "ridiculously"
