Inspired by two similar posts, here's yet one more: have you ever indulged in a video game-themed promotional drink?  I'm really not expecting a huge turnout for this one, but maybe a turnout of sorts from you folks in Japan, at least.

To cast a wider net, let me also ask: have you ever indulged in any video game-themed food item, period?

I tried Final Fantasy XII Potion once; the blue hue looked a little too close to Scope mouthwash for comfort, and the taste..... well, like Joe said, it's very much like a herbal energy drink.  Actually, someone compared the taste to a slightly tolerable cough syrup.  That sounds about right to me, and it's not something I'd ever drink on a regular basis.  I'm most curious to try out that MM9 tie-in Rockman E Can Drink.  And, of course, Regain has been around before it, but Metal Gear Solid 4 made it popular.  I mean, it completely refills health and psyche in the game - it's GOTTA work in real life, too!

As far as food-related products, I can only remember what came out here in the States: specifically the 80s Nintendo Cereal System.  Remember that one?  The one that featured the split-in-half pieces of Mario and Zelda characters?  I can recall that it was fruit-based - wasn't bad, but fruit flavors really weren't my bag when it came to breakfast cereals.

On the other hand, I vividly remember loving Pac-Man Cereal.  There was something about it; it was pretty much a Lucky Charms rip-off but with Pac-Man characters for the marshmallow bits.  Yet for some reason, I remembered it just tasting better that Lucky Charms ever was.

I know some of you who attended the recent Gyakuten Saiban concerts got to try out Ema's Snackoo product.  How was it??

Back in the day, they made Super Mario Bros juice boxes. The only name I remember is Warp Zone orange. A few years later they made 8oz soda cans named after the core Mario heroes at the time. Being that I wanted to be Mario when I was a kid, I of course drank these up like water.

The FFVII canned potion drinks that came with little figures were a LOT better than the original blue bottle things.  They were pretty much a generic cider-y fizzy drink that wasn't terribly offensive but wasn't terribly amazing either.

I never had any of the promotional video game food stuff, but I did base my really awesome "Seven Heart Soup" on the Superb Soup in Zelda: Twilight Princess.  Bits of pumpkin, cheese, potatoes, chunks of beef, green and red peppers (and anything else i can find in the fridge)  :-)

Yes, I realize that in the game it healed 8 hearts, but 7 sounds better.

I don't have any distinct memories of consuming any video game related food products, but there had to be a video game related fruit rollup back in the day, and if there was, I probably bummed a piece off of one of my friends at lunch.

Amazingu Nov 6, 2008

Holy shit, they made an E tank!? Gotta try that!
Have no clue where to get it though...

I had plenty of opportunity to try that FFVII beverage that came with the figurine, cos they had dozens of 'em all over the place, and another stack of cans only at my local supermarket, but I never actually bought one, because 200 yen is ridiculously expensive for 350 ml of a non-alcoholic drink.

I've had the FFVII beverage/health drink that comes with the figures too.
I have to agree that it wasn't that great either.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thinks that the Superb Soup sounds good.

Where do I get me some Ordon cheese?  ;p

Here's someone who's tried it:

Apparently, it's rather tasteless.  But in the drink's defense, when you're a robot, you're really not supposed to have taste buds anyway.

I don't think I've ever had access to video game themed beverages and I can't say the association would be much of a draw to me. If it counts, I do remember having bubble gum packs as a kid that had stickers and scratch games based on Donkey Kong Jr, Turbo, Zaxxon and Frogger. And similar ones that were Pac-Man stickers.

A search reveals them to be Video City stickers - http://www.geocities.com/kjnorth/yset8.htm

Surprised nobody mentioned the Mountain Dew "HALO3" pop, which tasted like a quick combination of their Cherry and Orange flavors.

Ema's Snackoos from the Phoenix Wright concert were an alright salty snack, there were 2 varieties (one lighter and one darker).

Here's somebody else's description: "first of all, it tastes sweet, it tastes kinda like burnt caramel or brown sugar and the crunchiness is slightly harder than japanese rice cracker and overall it leaves a sweet burnt after taste on my tongue and throat...Its actually a nice tidbit but just not as nice as expected smile"

~~Rockman E-Can Report~~!!

OK, about 10 seconds ago I popped the top on my very own Blue E-Can.

It's... non-carbonated, that's the first thing I noticed...
It's... sort of Diet Mt.Dew-ish, but with less kick...
It's... Lemonade.

Yep, when the can is done, my final impression is Lemonade.
(LIGHT lemonade, even Kool-Aid dumps more sugar in theirs).

Well the rush of anticipation sure beat out the NON-rush of the actual liquid, but the other cans will be nice memorabilia to display though.

Nice.  Was that the one from Amazingu?  Lemme extend my thanks to you for hooking him up with the PSN card; you've made it possible for us to engage in some booty kicking SSF2T-HD action. :)

As for the E-Can itself, if I ever got my hands on one, I likely wouldn't even open it.  I'd be perfectly content for it to look nifty on my memorabilia shelf of gaming goods.

Carl Dec 3, 2008

Yep, a good trade that was, worked out for everyone.

I can arrange for a can to make it's way to your shelf, as the minimum order was for a 10-pack of them.  Inquisitive blue bombers can email for details.

Oh no, it doesn't stop with just the E-can...

Now Apris is making a Street Fighter IV Energy Drink.

At least an import friendly shop is planning on stocking it this time.
http://www.shopncsx.com/streetfighter20 … drink.aspx

They're pretty frank about it, aren't they? :)

"Appreciation Systems Company (Apris) of Japan makes unremarkable beverages but since they package them in nifty character cans, some forgiveness is in order for the quality of their drinks. We've dodged most of their offerings in the past such as the Rockman E-Tank but they're coming out with a Street Fighter 20th Anniversary Drink that we can't ignore nor dodge successfully. History is being made and NCS has to reluctantly embrace the SF canned drink. At least Apris isn't calling them something weird like potions."

Really wanna try the E-Can thing. Had an opportunity to try the FFVII drinks, but didn't because I was turned off by the price where they are available here.

Edit: Don't know if you blokes got this, but I remember Mario cereal way back when.

http://www.smbhq.com/cereal.htm

I remember mine always came in a yellow box festooned with various characters. It wasn't as creative as this one is. I like how it looks like an authentic Nintendo system box, and I dig that.
