So mom was doing her annual basement spring cleaning this weekend, and this time, she came upon a box of old drawings of mine.  She of course had no idea what a few of them were supposed to be, but I'm sure you guys would.  It struck me as doubly-neat, because these particular drawings were done very close to exactly eighteen years ago.

So without further ado, here are some genuine, honest-to-goodness artwork from a younger, more innocent Angela Liu - with brief comments so that you know just what the hell you're looking at.

Too cute!

When I was eight, my parents thought video games were bad and I wasn't allowed to own a game system.  Most of my NES era experiences were relegated to friends' houses.  I had to convince my parents to let me buy the $90 Game Boy in 1991 with my own money.  I think I cleaned out nearly my whole savings that day.  They figured this huge expenditure (I had no allowance and getting money was really tough for preteen xlord) would teach me the meaning of value and saving.

Very nice...Brings back memories of the era. I never even attempted to do character designs, just minimal stick figures (with either a bow or whip coming out of their twig arm) and Pac Man ripoffs (I'd add fangs to one to show it was a bad guy). I always liked drawing items and level sketches (I have a couple old notebooks full of nothing but platform-levels with spikes, coins and all that good stuff...No wonder I'm such a 2D junkie today)

Though...The one in the bottom left of the Contra one kinda looks like a ninja turtle. Still Konami, right? ^_^

Those are pretty sweet (as in touching). Certainly brings me back to playing those games as a kid. Video games back then really captured my imagination.

Damn. That really brings back memories.

Back in the 4th grade, I used to doodle game characters all the time, usually on spelling tests and such. The teachers were OK with it, since I was a pretty good speller. Maybe if I ever get a scanner that works worth a damn I'll share some.

I like your added comments. ^_~

Will this be on your dvd under bonus features??

Mm, you guys were less vicious than I expected.  Thank you. ;)

I wish I'd kept some of my early junior high doodles.  Those consisted mostly of various fighting games designs, patterned largely after Street Fighter 2, like the fighter selection screen (I LOVED making the fighter selection screen), the fighters themselves, and just being able to come up with all these crazy special moves, animation frame by animation frame.  Imagine my surprise when a few short years later I saw SNK using an uncannily-similar special move that I had thought up: the Kaiser Wave! o_O

That IS cute. I think it's funny that you were into those types of games when you were a wee girl. My sister wouldn't even touch Duck Hunt back then.

A PETA gal, eh?  In truth, I used to doodle for a whole lot of different games back then.  Double Dragon and Contra were among several others, including 1942, Space Harrier, Mario Brothers, the Ultima series, Bubble Bobble, and Skate or Die.  I seem to remember drawing a lot of Raid on Bungeling Bay, for some reason; those overhead maps were kinda fun to draw, I guess.

While I never drew VG characters, I will admit that my siblings and I and some of our friends actually acted out games -- specifically, Adventure and Air/Sea Combat (was that what it was called?) for the Atari 2600. I remember that second one because my younger brother and his friend (they must've been like 5 years old at the time) played "spiders." Long story.
