I'd like to see responses.

Ever since Februrary, my alcohol use has skyrocketed. I hit my all-time high between April and June, I guess, drinking almost every night, and enough to get drunk. Mostly beer.

I have since scaled back some, but I still drink more now than before Feb. Nowadays I drink heavily about two to three times a week. Still mostly beer, but I mix in some wine if I can. (No, not at the same time. And no to hard liquor.)

References available upon request.

Zane Oct 25, 2006

I used to get completely shattered at least four times a week... but I've slowed way down since then. I'll enjoy a beer or a glass of wine throughout the week with dinner, but if there is karaoke involved I am usually several beers deep before I get my first song up... and I have at least one place to sing at from Wednesday until Sunday. So, potentially, I could just be talking out of my ass about not drinking that much because I might go out for karaoke and booze five nights a week sometimes.

Bah. Ignore me. I'm hammered.

Jay Oct 25, 2006

I'd say about an average of four beers a month and that's it.

GoldfishX Oct 25, 2006 (edited Oct 25, 2006)

I'd say 4-6 per year...if that. Mostly with Italian food. Have to try one with sushi sometime though. Only brand I can stomach is Budweiser...Didn't like Coors at all and Heinekin is basically watered-down Sprite. Even one beer still gives me a miserable headache.

Wanderer Oct 25, 2006

When I was younger, I used to drink a fair amount. Now, I'll have a drink every so often at restaurants (usually vodka or tequila-based).

If I'm feeling particularly adventurous one night, I'll consume a bottle of wine. Those are fun times.

I can't stand beer. The stuff is absolutely vile.

Kenology Oct 25, 2006

I don't drink any alcohol, actually.  Not a smoker either.  What I am is healthy!

Schala Oct 25, 2006

Boy, don't visit a forum for a week or so and see what happens. ^_~

My alcohol use has jumped since college. Jumped from 0 drinks a year to about 6 drinks a year. I don't have a favorite drink...I'll just usually ask for a recommendation for a sweet drink. Can't stand strong sour alcoholic aftertastes.

Congrats...Just don't catch it all second-hand. Shit's nasty.

Loosen up, dude!  Like, everyone's doin' it~!

A while back, I tried to make a resolution to drink a glass of red wine every day.  I did it for the supposed health benefits. For a while, it was going okay, but then I realized; it was getting bloody expensive.  On top of which, it was getting a bit addicting; drinking more than the recommended one or two glasses a day tends to offset the benefits it provides.  I was up to five glasses a day!

So now I reserve alcohol consumption strictly for parties and holidays, which is like three or four times a year for me. The only time I ever let myself get even moderately drunk is Fourth of July.  One year I got so unbelievably smashed that it gave me a hangover for four days straight, and put me off of beer for a year and a half.

Anyone ever tried Bar Harbor's Blueberry Ale?  It's crazy good.

avatar! Oct 25, 2006

I don't drink alcohol more than a handful of times during the year. Sometimes on a date, especially if she's boring wink  Man, these Boston women love to drink, what's up with that?!

cheers,

I'm not a big red wine fan myself but I did consider drinking a glass of white wine a day. And then I added up how much it would cost and that settled that. wink

I'm going to a wedding next month that's going to have a crazy amount of alcohol (among other amusing things). My mom is coming with me (both in costume!) and she asked me if she could stay at my place over night because we're going to drink way more than we should.

I love my mom. wink

I usually have one to two drinks per day and have done so for as long as I can remember.  I was raised the European way where alcohol is just part of the meal and it's never been a big deal to me.  I rarely ever get drunk (maybe twice in my whole life) and I rarely drink hard liquor or mixed drinks (I will allow for the occassional visit from Dr. Beam in the rare instances when my emotional state requires it).

I guess I'm also a bit of a snob when it comes to beer and wine.  Wine has to be a good pairing for the food, and I won't drink drivel like Yellowtail.  I'm not so picky with beer, but I avoid the Miller/Coors/Buds of the world.  I do like Corona though my beer afficiando friends think I'm scum for drinking it. :-)  Lastly, I keep both sake and Japanese beer in the house in the event a sushi night should arise.

XISMZERO Oct 25, 2006

Mostly an anti-alcoholic abuse trumpeter. I honestly don't care much for it. I enjoy wine every now and then but I mostly hate beer. Now coffee, that's my alcohol.

jmj20320514 Oct 26, 2006

I only drink maybe once every two months, usually because I'm at a social gathering or concert. I never drink by myself.

I'm big on red wine and the occassional vodka mixed with soda or juice. Beer sucks for the most part (except for Heineken) and I'll almost always opt for hard liquor.

Having grown up familiar with alcohol abuse, I never find myself wanting to go out of my way for it.

Sabreman Oct 26, 2006

A bit of wine every now and again, but purely socially. I don't have any alcohol in the house, just never been bothered about it (and I genuinely don't like the taste of beer).

I've never been 'properly' drunk in my entire life, in fact.

oddigy Oct 26, 2006

I have a margarita every Saturday when Jeremy and I go out to check out some mexican restaurant in Houston that we haven't been to (we'll be doing this every week for 10 years).

Other than that, maybe once a month we'll buy a six pack of beer, but that's about it.

There's some crappy tequila in the freezer, but that doesn't count.  We're never going to drink it. XD

Oh yeah. My bad. I probably saw the word "kareoke" in your post and glazed over it like Homer Simpson trying to read the NYT.

Well, just for informational purposes, when I was a younger, I used to drink alot.  Every day, 5+ drinks in one sitting.
Which led to tolerance and eventually being able to drink a bottle of Jack Daniels in one sitting.

Then I read up on what alcohol was, medically, and chemically.
I also looked in the mirror and saw the extra pounds it put on.

So, now, several years later, I am a fitness junkie, and only drink a 6oz glass of red wine a day.
Once in a great while, I will have 3 or 4 drinks with a friend, but, that is like ever six months.

I generally drink my wine with my meals.  Being in Germany, and less than 30 mins from France, I've more or less adapted to the European way of consuming.

longhairmike Oct 27, 2006

may dad, who is a retired chemical engineer now, has been growing grapes and making his own wine for the past 40 years. the whole basement of my parents house is basically a huge wine cellar.  yet as much free access as i woudve had to that stuff on a daily basis throughout my entire teens and twenties, i never really cared for alcohol...  flying unregistered ultralights under bridges, yes,, but drinking,, no...

Jodo Kast Oct 27, 2006

As for the past, this is what I can recall:

At age 6 my aunt Vera let me have a sip of beer. I think the brand was Stag; it was disgusting. When I was 15, my friends and I stole a bunch of wine coolers from some liquor shop and walked around all day with them in a duffle bag. We had to wait for our parents to go to sleep before smuggling them inside, of course. And then, we would put them in the fridge and drink them around 2 AM. Also, at 15, we took a bunch of beers out of my grandpa's fridge and drank them. I couldn't even finish one can, since it was so disgusting.

When I was 18, I spent the night at my cousin's house and he made something with bourbon, gin, peach schnapps, and dr. pepper. It tasted like bubble gum and I drank a lot. I also threw up several times and my cousin told me I was going to die. I believed him and started freaking out.

At 19, I had one can of beer. At 20 and 21, I got drunk several times, but only threw up once. At age 25 I had a Bailey's on the rocks (about 4 ounces) and threw up. I don't drink alcohol anymore mainly because it's disgusting and makes me throw up. I might be allergic to it, since one beer makes me feel horrible.

Occasionally, at work, people get me to drink a shot, usually some concoction with vodka. Over the years, I've probably drank 5 or 6 shots with vodka. They never made me sick, so I guess small quantities of vodka is ok for me.

I've tried wine and it's utterly repulsive. Wine tastes considerably different from wine coolers. I think chewing on cardboard would be more pleasant.

The only substances I drink regularly are water, grape juice, blueberry juice, and 3% milk (labeled vitamin D or whole milk for some reason, when the only difference is that it has more calories).

I drink close to a half gallon of milk a day.  But it has to be Skim Milk.
I can't drink that liquid butter stuff called whole milk.

Qui-Gon Joe Oct 27, 2006

Don't drink alcohol ever, as a general rule.  I have on occasion and got quite tipsy one time recently with some friends trying to help me get my mind off something, but otherwise, blech.

I also drink a lot of skim milk and think whole milk is just plain disgusting.  Unfortunately skim is nearly impossible to find in Japan - only one of my local grocery stores even carries it, and they only ever have like 6 cartons in at any given time since nobody in Japan seems interested in it.  I swear I buy half of all the cartons they get in...

Dude, it's got to be whole milk. And not just any whole milk - organic whole milk. Yes, it costs about $7 a gallon, but it makes regular milk taste like water. As far as I can tell, the extra cost is because of the taste since it isn't any healthier. I drink whole milk because it's difficult for me to maintain my body weight. I gain and lose 10 pounds on what seems like a weekly basis. It's a constant battle for me to maintain a 200 pound bodyweight. I would love to weigh around 250 (I could probably compete in strong man shows at that weight), but I don't see that happening. Unless I win the lottery and can afford to eat 10,000 calories per day.

Wanderer Oct 28, 2006

As far as milk goes, I only drink 1% and only with cereal.

Schala Oct 28, 2006

I love milk. I love all types of milk. I prefer skim because it has the fewest calories, but I can drink any milk no problem. Of course I apparently have no taste buds, which probably explains why I can't taste the difference between high-fat foods and their lowfat versions, which is why I was able to go from whole to skim in a heartbeat. Although I will say that there is a definite texture difference between animal milk and soymilk.

Soy milk has a very different taste, which I suppose could refer to the texture. Plain soy protein (in the form of lecithin granules) is horrible and I'm reminded of it whenever I drink soy milk, which explains why I can't get used to it. Soy protein is worth consuming though, since it's so healthy. I currently add apple cinnamon flavored lecithin granules to cereal in order to get it.

I drink several glasses a day of "regular" milk mixed with soymilk.
Best of both worlds.

This topic moving from alcohol to milk is a severe breach of forum etiquette and I intend to nip it in the bud. big_smile

You should come check out Japan dude.  People drinking on a regular basis and getting smashed occasionally seems completely the norm.  That applies to foreigners here too.  Many of my colleagues, who are mostly in the near-30 range, still booze it up college style.

As for myself, I'll usually have one night with several drinks every weekend, but that's from late night till morning so usually I just get a little buzz and that's it.  Only get to hangover level a couple times a year.  Going out on weekdays I usually limit it to a couple beers.  Trying to throw in a glass of red wine now and then with all the talk about the possible health benefits.

Staple drinks: Japanese beer (Sapporo, Kirin, or Asahi), Corona, bourbon and coke, shandygaff, Awamori (Okinawan shochu - nice hard stuff smile)

Kirin Ichiban is up in my top 5 beers... maybe the top 3. (Red Stripe is up at number one.) I will get it on with hot sake any day of the week. big_smile

It's good to hear Japan will accept me (and kareoke boy) with open arms!

shdwrlm3 Oct 31, 2006

I've had occasional sips of beer and a few glasses of wine, but I've found that my body is just intolerant of the stuff. I haven't drunk enough to fully experience it yet, but I think I may be predisposed to "Asian Flush." Even with small amounts of alcohol I've felt my face get rather hot, so I tend to abstain from drinking.

Of course, I made an exception when I visited Las Vegas. Those 99 cent frozen margaritas are a godsend! I think I showed my alcoholic ignorance, though, when the bartender asked if I wanted salt and I had no idea what he meant.

Amazingu Nov 1, 2006

MAJOR Wine drinker here.

Hardly ever drink beer, since I don't really like the taste very much, but I can drink it when social situations require it (although I still don't see why people can't have fun without it).

I drink one alcoholic beverage every day, whilst gaming before I go to sleep, it helps smile
Usually it's wine, sometimes Sake or ChuHi. and extremely occasionally Shochu.

I never drank so much as to get drunk, since I know my limits, and I don't see the point in getting stupidly pissed, although some people measure the amount of fun they had by the amount they threw up apparently.
