So, anyone catch any BF sales today?  Toys R Us was selling the Game Boy Micro for $35, so I picked up a black-colored base to match my silver one.  Also got Final Fantasy III DS for $20.  Best of all was the Oppo DV-970HD DVD player I got for just $69 at Circuit City, marked down from $149 retail.  It's a video up-conversion player, region-free, and supports HDMI hook-up.  The timing of this purchase couldn't have come at a better time, what with the arrival of my new HDTV as well.  ^_^

I failed miserably. I was only seeking the SP for $50, a few movies for $5, and a digital camera, but everything was sold out by time I reached my destinations. Even the demo camera was purchased. I really wanted that nice backlit SP...

Angela, I'm sure it's too late now, but where was FFIII on sale for $20?

Next year I am leaving the house at 3AM, I kid you not.

Zane Nov 24, 2006

My Black Friday was just fine. Got up, had some coffee, went in to work in my jeans and Airwalks and coasted through the day. I saw a ton of people in the mall near my office, and was surrounded by idiots when I went to Gamestop on my lunch break (surprised?). Then I finished my day, came home, kicked off my shoes and heated up some Thai leftovers.

And now, Zelda. I think I made out ok today.

Kenology Nov 24, 2006

I'd say I made out great considering I got a Wii today!!!!

raynebc Nov 24, 2006

I worked all day and avoided going into any store at all.  Go me!  I'll wait until after Christmas for the actual market value of the Wii to fall back to list price.

XLord007 Nov 24, 2006

This is the first Black Friday I've taken off of work in years, so I slept  in.  I didn't get up until 4:30p at which time I ate a piece of bread and then went to pick up my clothes from the tailor's.  And now it's time to play more Zelda.  I love being on vacation. :-)

SonicPanda Nov 25, 2006

Well, last year was such a fruitless, miserable experience that I ducked out this year, especially since the rest of the crew from last year was leaving at A QUARTER TO 2...I mean, hell.

So I slept in until I had to work, had a brisk-but-unremarkable shift (an advantage of working a regional, comparitively-small-scale outlet), ran into my friend at Gamestop who seemed to survive the last week fairly well (though he described Wii Day as 'the best and worst day" of his life, on the one hand scooping up nearly everything Wiilated, but then working both a 16- and 8-hour shift over the course of 30 hours), ate turkey, played Okami.

Thus, on the side of health over wealth, I made out pretty well.

It was at Toys R Us, as part of their 5am to noon "Doorbusters" sale.  I myself thought the sale was only covering the "buy one get one free" selection of titles, so while FFIII didn't pertain to the 2-for-1, you've gotta admit that's still one hell of a great price.

I was sorely tempted to pick up the Wii too, which they not only had in stock, but were also throwing one of those starter kits in for free too.

TerraEpon Nov 25, 2006

Yeah I figuired you meant TRU...

But I gotta ask...are you SURE it was Circuit City that had the Oppo player? It's not on their website, nor did the store have any reference to it.

POPOBOT5000 Nov 25, 2006

Toys-R-Us, eh? How'd I miss that one? 50% off would've been too sweet. I'm not really prepared to pay $40 on a DS game.

I had a glimmer of hope when I realized the SP sale lasted through today, and that three other CCs had it "in stock" according the the website, but, of course, no.

Jodo Kast Nov 25, 2006

I fail to comprehend why people call it "Black Friday", since that was already taken by the stock market crash. I refuse to call it as such and think "Green Friday" is better and makes sense. I had to work on Green Friday, so I didn't get any shopping done. I don't physically shop much anyway, because of the internet.

Sure as sugar.  I too would've thought that if it didn't show availability online that they wouldn't have it in-store either.  They even had a refurbished version of the OPDV971H too, which was going for $99.

I also wanted to check out the Toshiba HD-XA1, which I was certain they didn't carry, but surprisingly they did.

I recently read that the name derives from the tendency for stores to shift from "in the red" to "in the black" due the increased consumerism. I always thought the "black" was akin to "unholy," given the pandemonium that ensues.

My thoughts were the same as yours. I thought the name derived from how crappy it is to be an 8 year old at a Toys 'R' Us get pummeled by some other kid's white trash mom because you grabbed the last box of some awesome lego set.

(it's a memory from my one and only time shopping on Black Friday).

I want th 970 -- it has SACD (especially) and DVD-A support, which the 971 doesn't. Wonderful little grab you got there...

While not related to Black Friday specifically, I'm VERY happy with the /four/ seperate $20 off $50 at Buy.com couples for using Google Checkout. Far as I can tell, it's unlimited, and works for games....

Haha, my DVD collection has increased exponentially over the past month, thanks to this and the $10 off $30 deal.

Yes, thank heavens for the internet.

I'm not sure what day of the week it happened, but the Friday was called "Black Friday". I vaguely remember hearing that it crashed on a Thursday, but it's a memory from high school and subject to confabulation.

raynebc Nov 26, 2006

Both the stock market crashes in 1929 and 1987 were both on Monday, so "Black Monday".

Wanderer Nov 26, 2006

I was on Thanksgiving vacation so I missed the fun. A shame. wink

... the only thing I really want this Christmas is a replacement for my dying Sony VAIO (or piece of shit, as I like to call it). Perhaps a shiny 80 gig IPod...

perhaps the blackness is refering to the hole in your wallet...  green friday sounds too teen angsty,,,

And you didn't pick up the Nintendo Wii?   I thought you liked Nintendo stuff.

---------------

Black Friday is called this because it is when retailers try to make a profit for the year.  It is based on the theory that retailers operate at a loss (in the red) for a good part of the year, and make their profits during the holiday season (in the black).

Best thing I got was a 19" HD-ready TV for $199 (regularly $329-$399).

Heh, the flaming Pokémon nerdness has nothing to do with Nintendo. I do like Nintendo stuff, though don't mistake that for being interested only in Nintendo.

I actually did get a Wii on Black Friday, just not for myself. It's my brother's Christmas present. I'll get one for myself once it comes in black. cool

XISMZERO Nov 28, 2006

I slept until about 11. We made it out to the local mall by 3PM. Crowds. That's all I saw...

Angela Nov 24, 2007

Rather than create an entirely new thread, I figured I'd just bump up last year's.  Did anyone get any good Black Friday deals this time around?

Other than a variety of really nice clothing (finally picked up that North Face coat I really wanted -- at 40% off!), I've got nothing particularly significant to share.

Zane Nov 24, 2007

I picked up about 30 stars in Mario Galaxy on the cheap. That's about it. wink

GoldfishX Nov 24, 2007

I worked, I got home, I worked on Ballroom Blitz on expert, played Contra IV and pigged out on leftovers. I'm content...I value my life too much to go shopping on Black Friday. ;p

Ryu Nov 24, 2007 (edited Nov 24, 2007)

I went around 2 in the afternoon to swap Soul Calibur Legends for Fire Emblem (both on Wii), try to pick up Ghost Squad (alas, it is still a no-show), and pick up my sister's Christmas gift at Best Buy (the HBO shows were half off, which beat DeepDiscount with its super sale price).  For $20 I picked up Spider-man 3 on 360, only to find out from a friends that it isn't really worth it, so I'll be taking it back.

Oh, and it was easy finding parking spots and wasn't as crowded as I expected.  Good timing or a not-good-as-expected shopping day for retailers?

Kenology Nov 24, 2007

Seems so far our '07 Black Friday have nothing on last year's.  I didn't even leave the house yesterday.  I just stayed in played games all day and it was great.  I got 60 stars in one day in Mario Galaxy yesterday.  I can't believe it myself.

Wanderer Nov 24, 2007

Whoa, I was reading this thread and was like, "People got Wiis? How was THAT possible?" and then I found my post and I was like, "Whoa... I didn't post in this." And then, I noticed it was from last year. Head on desk moment...

Anyway, I stayed home this time and amused myself by reading stories of people trampling each other and getting into fights.

It's Accounting terminology; red means you're in debt (since debt if denoted in red ink), and black means profit (since it's denoted in black ink).

...

I so want a Wii, and certain accompanying games, but I so didn't want to deal with crowds of belligerent people.

Schala Nov 24, 2007

I stayed comfortably at home and didn't add to all the rampant consumption of new goods (when used items such as video games would work just as well). Good thing too because I heard the Best Buy and Circuit City parking lots were full by 12:30 a.m.....when the stores opened at FIVE a.m. Noooo way. The only BF sale I've ever tried in my life was at Sears, which had FAR smaller crowds.
