Although, DVD rental kiosks aren't exactly new hat, I was able to try one out for the first time the other day, and I've gotta say, it's awfully convenient.  Since no more than three Blockbusters had closed around my area late last year, it's been pretty hard nowadays finding a place for movie rentals.  With no membership required, the best thing with DVDXpress is that it charges just $1.49 per movie, and a dollar for every additional night; which definitely one-ups Blockbuster's $4.50+ for two nights rate.

I understand that these rental kiosks are quite popular outside of the U.S., such as in Europe -- but I wonder if this sort of thing will take off here in the States?

I could see these working in cities where you pick up and drop off during your commutes to work, but I doubt they'd take off in areas where people drive since it would become such a hassle to have to make an extra stop with your car, especially knowing that every day you forget to stop is going to cost you extra.

I wondered the same thing and looked it up and at least in my area they're mostly in local Supermarkets, places you're bound to be anyway every couple days.

do any of these kiosks carry titles besides the MPAA's greatest hits?

In the Denver area, McDonald's used to rent DVDs in some of their restaurants for $1 a night.  I'm not sure if that was a pilot program, and I don't know if it's still continuing, but it's an interesting idea.  It encourages people to come back the next day to return the movie, and since you're back, maybe you'll order another value meal.
