I sometimes wonder if procrastination is natural or really a waste of time. Why do I get these urges to do completely pointless, inefficient, and financially destructive things? All money should be saved; all time should be used optimally. None of us does those things. We can't; I have long suspected that the laws of thermodynamics decant into human behavior. If you want to procrastinate with me, use my rating system on some your movies....

I love how you have this awesome philosophical rant, and then introduce your complete movies section.

It is that, efficiency, money-saving, etc cannot entertain. And we are creatures in need of entertainment when our needs are easily satisfied. We create needs that are actually wants. You know that! smile

Also, I LOVE the rating system.

I know the difference between what I need and what I want.  And since my needs are easily fulfilled, I can often indulge myself with distractions.

Ashley Winchester Mar 18, 2007

In a certain since I think you're comparing apples and oranges in comparing procrastination with the hierarchy behind needs and wants - this isn't to say they aren't/can't connected because they most certainly can be in certain situations, but give or take they are separate ideas.

As for the procrastination goes with me, I wish I'd quit procrastinating and move out of this small town I've lived in for 23 years and move to a more active area... as for needs and wants, if I could quit buying things I "want" outside that of which I do "need" such a thing would be possible. So, in my "I'm my own worst enemy scenario" both of these ideas can very well be connected – I’m living proof. So, from this you can tell I'm good using myself as an example and using it to prove other people's points wink

But yeah, it is a lot more fun to have and show off a big collection of something (be it CD's, DVDs, etc.) than boasting about how big of a wad you are currently sitting on. Of course, procrastination can lead to boredom which can lead you to buying things you DON'T need to entertain yourself - something else I'm guilty of.

Oh crap, I've depressed myself again AND I'm bored, time to go buy something! I'll scope out the soundtrack marketplace!

(but seriously, it's not THAT bad, I'm just taking a few light jabs at myself)

I'm interested in those Spanish and Mexican movies.

I will have to check them out.

It's diffcult for me to answer why. Ideal situations do not happen and can't happen. As an example, consider the engine in a car. An ideal engine would not get hot. But there has to be some waste energy. Anytime money is not spent on something necessary, whenever time is used carelessly, we humans are producing waste. But it's not physical waste from the digestive process. It's different. It doesn't have to be negative. Waste can be recycled. My argument is that we have some sort of intellectual waste.

That's all for now. I'm only confusing myself.

I do know that. But my mind demands some sort of rigorous understanding that leaves me baffled. I know that I think but I don't always know why. I mean - this is my mind. So why does it badger me about trivialities? I'm not badgering myself. Why would I do that? Would I stab myself? Of course not. So why are things different in the mind?

That implies that, like the engine of a car, you know exactly what our function is. Is saving money really our function? In order to say that you're not using your time optimally, you'd have to be pretty sure what we're supposed to be doing with our time.

For me, it's not that clear. Who's to say you're not supposed to spend your time making lists of movies you've watched? Maybe you are fulfilling your purpose beautifully.

To quote the immortal This Is Spinal Tap:

Have a good time, all the time.

(or at least try to).

Unless you have an overbearing feeling that you have some specific calling in life - some undeniable impulse to better yourself (whatever that means, and to whose benefit) - I don't see the problem in indulging the things that you enjoy, within reason. Do I sometimes feel guilty that I laid down a stack of cash on a CD? Sure, but did I enjoy the CD? Absolutely. Is that money wasted then?

We could all go live in caves and ponder the meaning of our existences until we chance upon some revelation that will inspire others to higher ideals, or we can get on with what we've got. Enjoy the company of our friends, engage in the activities that bring us pleasure and try to make sure we live a happy and good life. That's enough for me, and if part of that is collecting VGM, or playing videogames, or reading comics, so be it.

I'm wondering if anyone here has read "An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce? I've been meaning to read it for a while (it's a short story), and finally got around to it recently smile  It's an excellent short story that has influenced many writers, and also made it's way into many many television shows, and in fact was made into a short Academy Award winning film... anyway, I somehow get the feeling that this story (and probably the movie too) is something that Jodo would really enjoy! So there you have it. That's my recommendation to Jodo, and if you (Jodo or anyone else) do read/watch "An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge" (or have) I'd be interested to hear what you think of it.

cheers,

edit: Without giving anything away, let's just say it's philosophical and a bit surreal -definitely awesome!

I had no idea there was a book; I had assumed it was a Twilight Zone episode only. Now, I don't know if the TZ episode and the book are similar, but I'll find out. Thanks for the heads up.

Not yet, but I'm interested. They look really weird, so resistance is difficult. I didn't know there was an anime of it.
