I'm pretty excited about this one!

I'm a sucker for arrange albums based on vintage arcade/console classics.  Hopefully there won't be too many techno/DJ arrangements, though.  Some ol' skool VGM rock-style tunes would be most welcome, and the source material certainly provides for some quirky and interesting possibilities.

Anyone have any more info regarding the contents of this release?

I think the Super Star Soldier arrangements might be from the old soundtrack.  I could be wrong though.  I don't know about the other tracks.

Hoping for some Adventure Island tunes. What spells Hudson like Master "Higgins" Takahashi?

I am now officially looking forward to this album. Awesome retro-style retro arranges.

Okay, maybe not so keen on that vocal track. But at least there's an instrumental version!

Not quite what I was expecting.  Interesting choice to fuse the original chip tunes with some modern sound.  Not my cup of tea.
Thank goodness for samples.

Sounds really weak, quite frankly...Some just sound like the chiptune originals with a techno beat added (sample 4 was pretty bad) and they were slapped together in about 2 minutes. And the less said about sample 10, the better. If they sampled the best here, I can assume the rest is junk as well. Meh...

Sounds lightweight at best though it is listenable unlike Gradius Tribute and will make the listener *feel* nostalgic even if they don't know the tunes well (or at all). These Tribute albums need to buck up the production values like some of the past tribute albums. Gradius Tribute would be hard to top for shame of the century.

Wow, did it blow that bad??

GoldfishX Jun 22, 2007

Yes, it was awful. Just lame arrangements of great Gradius tunes all over. 2 of Furukawa on autopilot, a bad techno one, one that clocked in at about a minute (there were only 9 tracks overall!)...You name it from Gradius 1-3 and it probably got soiled. The best track was a Gradius 3 medley and that was still just "above average" at best. Just zero effort...Much like what this one sounds like.

CHz Jun 22, 2007 (edited Jun 22, 2007)

The only sample I know the original track of is Challenger, and despite the chiptune sound, I thought there was still decent expansion from the original. The textures after the switch at the halfway point were nice. :\

I didn't think Gradius Tribute was as awful as a lot of people do, but it was definitely a disappointment. Just so much wasted potential, like all the arrangers decided just to whip up an album in a single day and call it good.

Got this CD and I'm really digging it.  For the most part, the arrangements retain the sound and "feel" of the original tunes, and sound nothing like the monotonous techno throb of the Konami remix[ie] albums (like I was afraid they might).  This CD is really growing on me, and I love how the original sfx from the games were often masterfully treated as "instruments" to create new-ish compositions out of the themes, while remaining true to the original melodies.  This is without a doubt my favorite VGM-related release of the year, so far.

P.S. Neowing now has sound samples of every track: http://www.neowing.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VGCD-91
