A friend of mine just got his 60 GB PS3 after the price drop, and guess what! He says he can't even turn it on! Apparently after he turns it on, 15 seconds later it says the system is overheated and shuts down. He says when he turns it on he can't hear a thing from the system, which I think is strange since the system might be quiet but I would expect there to be noise from the fan...and so I told him maybe the fan is defective, but I don't really know. Anyway, does anyone have any idea? All I can say is way to go Sony...

Sounds like Sony is following suit with Microsoft.  I wonder how long until we hear about a 3 year warranty for the PS3.  Both companies should be embarassed and ashamed for releasing such crappy hardware.

Should be? Yes. But in reality (and this may sound cynical), they're probably laughing. More money for them when people send them in for repairs or just outright buy new units.

Jay Jul 20, 2007 (edited Jul 20, 2007)

Seeing as Microsoft are repairing 360s free for three years now, even paying people back retrospectively, (and that's going to be a hell of a lot of 360s) and are having to appease those among us who live in countries with decent customer protection, I can't imagine they're doing all that much laughing.

Ryu Jul 20, 2007

He should've got a 360 first.

Wait, "just got" how long ago?  Is it outside the store return policy?

Definitely not funny for Microsoft, but if they are doing this, they are likely committing the system for one more generation.  There is some kind of unwritten rule that if Microsoft can't get a sizable market by version 3, they pull out.

Oh yeah, it's going to get replaced for free. Still, it's really annoying. He literally just plugged the thing in, turned it on, and 15 seconds later it said it overheated! I've personally never been all that happy with the Playstation hardware (had problems with the PS1, and of course there's the famous read-error with the PS2), but having a brand new unit crash as soon as you turn it on? Sony has set a new world record tongue

cheers,

I agree wholeheartedly, Sony ignores painfully obvious problems with their consoles and never tend to take past mistakes into consideration, especially when they release a enitre new build of the original machine on the market - case in point the slim PS2.

How in the world is this "way to go Sony". Stupid anti-Sony fanboyism all over this thread. This is ridiculous, just get it fixed.

Sony's defective system rate for the PS3 is lower than 1%. X360 has made a name for itself for defective systems. I don't think any of you have really been keeping track of gaming news, eh? It definitely sounds like a defective fan problem, in which case is most easily solvable. It's unfortunate your friend had to buy a PS3 part of the minute defective population, but man. I had higher opinion of you guys.

I don't know why we need to go through all this again, but I guess some people haven't been keeping track, namely you. PS1: mine broke, along with tons of others. Why did it break? Because it was defective, and Sony refused to admit it. Until they got sued and lost that is. PS2, the same thing happened, this time the infamous read-error. Sony kept quiet about this too, in the hopes that people wouldn't notice, but they did. As for the PSP, it seems like just about every PSP has dead pixels. Why is that? Why should a brand new system naturally have dead pixels? Sony's response: "live with it". Now, as for the 360, yeah it's had issues. Microsoft's response: "send it to us, we'll fix it for free. Oh, by the way, we've decided to increase our warranty to 3 years."  My friend's PS3: broken, fan doesn't work. It's kinda like buying a car without tires. You would think somebody would run basic checks on the system, just like they do for computers. So then, all that said, I'm afraid I don't see anti-Sony fanboyism. I see a continuing trend with Sony products.

Where exactly do you get that the PS3 has a "lower than 1%" defect rate?

(1) I'm not excusing Sony's past products nor their history. I'm highly aware of Sony's products, having bought their PS, PS2, and even their MD and Hi-MD products. I tracked their rootkit issue and also their battery exploding issues.

(2) Dead pixels happen even on a Nintendo DS, if you have any technological background you know why they happen

(3) Your entire post added nothing to the discussion, still marked rabid anti-Sony in my book. I'm being honest and not reactionary

(4) Figures of PS3 failure rate from Kotaku, previously sourced from a manager from a BB/Target retail manager.

Perhaps my post added nothing to you, but so what? My post was simply stating fact, that my friend's PS3 was broken even before it was taken out of the box, which just reafirms the notion that Sony is still producing inferior quality goods. To be honest, I'm not even sure what "discussion" you are referring to. And frankly, your "source" (a BB/Target retail manager) is hearsay. If Sony had a track record of producing good quality products, then I would be surprised by the broken PS3 and probably just dismiss it as a fluke, but frankly I'm not surprised and they certainly have a horrible track record. Oh, and your post (2) "if you have any technological background you know why they happen" again, you miss the point. Why dead pixels occur is not any excuse to have them.

Wah Wah, my PS1/2/3 broke, Sony sux LOL.

I have no problems with my PS3.

It was actually an "EB associate." The original story was here: http://www.ripten.com/2007/07/03/failur … ss-than-1/

I found this tidbit to be of particular interest:

Not to be left out of the conversation, when another EB Games manager was asked if the store warranty was “worth the price”, he mentioned that the Nintendo Wii, with hundreds of units sold at their location has had ZERO come back as defective. We can hear Nintendo executives patting themselves on the back right now, no wait that’s just thunder.

So, if we're going to take the <1% failure rate of the PS3 as fact because an EB manager said so, then obviously the Wii has a 0% failure rate. The Wii strap, on the other hand...

Why dead pixels occur is not any excuse to have them.

Maybe, but the point is that, like Nintendo, Sony are offering to replace systems with dead pixels for free, so it's not really an issue. The square button thing, however, was pretty ridiculous. Of course, they would later admit to that problem as well, but Kutaragi's initial response was hilarious: "How dare you question my perfect design?! It's not a fault, it's a feature!" See, the red rings of death and flying Wii-motes are features!

Jay Jul 23, 2007

Well Kutaragi was a certified loon who has now been restrained so hopefully that will be the end of that.

On the PS3, this thread is actually the only time I've heard of someone with a problem, though I'm sure there are more. But the move from the indestructable XBox to the 'look at it and it dies' 360 shows that what's true for one generation is not always true for the next.

avatar! Jul 24, 2007

Update: My friend got the replacement system, and so far so good. He told me the fan is still VERY quiet, and so he's a bit worried it will eventually crash. Mmm, I don't know. I figure people here have PS3s, so can anyone say whether or not the fan should be noticeably loud? That is, he says he can't hear the fan at all, but I'm not sure he's done much with the PS3 so far (ie I don't think he's played any games on it yet).

cheers,

Zane Jul 24, 2007

My friend says his PS3 fan is pretty quiet, especially compared to the 360's. He's had his for a while and hasn't had a problem with it yet, other than the same one everyone else has: there's nothing to play on it yet.

At least, not until this: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/22703.html

Ryu Jul 24, 2007

I wouldn't know; mine's nestled into an entertainment center and I have a fan in the room too.  For what I can tell, the PS3 is quiet.

Haha! "Naturally when you're feeling sick, it's time to check out a man's magazine!" Oh man, that was funny smile The demo was impressive, but kinda reminds me of Halo. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, just saying!

Wow, I like how MGS4's looking, so far. Looks like there's going to be more fighting; I have to admit, just sneaking around all of the time was rather boring, but it looks like they're giving more tactics to stealth, too, namely the camouflage.

There's also supposed to be a Ninja Gaiden for PS3, isn't there? Ninja Gaiden Sigma, was it?

Ryu Jul 25, 2007

Yeah, Sigma is out already.  I never cared for the 3D Ninja Gaiden... or any of the MG(S) games, to be honest.

raynebc Jul 25, 2007

I wouldn't worry about a quiet fan.  Fans on modern computer equipment are often designed to be quiet.  The new MPC computers we get at work are so quiet you can't even hear them after you start it up.

Adoru Jul 25, 2007

Yeah I can't hear my PS3 at all when it's on and it's only 4 feet away from me. Plus even though the fan is working, the lower right side is so hot, I'd probably burn myself if I touched it for too long. And as for games, a lot of great titles are coming up this Fall, including Heavenly Sword and the new Ratchet & Clank.

Ryu Jul 25, 2007

^ Speaking of Heavenly Sword---demo tomorrow!  Yay!
