damn, nevermind..

Bernhardt Jul 25, 2007

Yeah, man...the guy in the chintzy armor on the U.S. Mega Man cover art REALLY makes me want to play the game...

As for Mega Man IV U.S., the face they put on him makes him look like a devilish version of The Big Boy (TM) restaurant mascot, as opposed to the more anime-looking Mega Man  IV Euro cover.

Actually now that I've thought about it, the original Mega Man's cover is so bad it's great - it's a real piece of MM history... in a certain sense I doubt any fan would want it any other way at this point.

Ryu Jul 26, 2007

The Japanese Suikoden cover art is better than the US one.

I believe the American cover for the original MM says the same thing.

I had never even seen the US one until that article. It's pretty hideous. We got the JP art over here and, as my US copy of Suikoden 2 had art in a similar style, I always thought that the US version of the first one would have the same style.

Your Ico cover was nasty too.

I wouldn't say that it was "nasty", but I do think that the JP/EU version is more fitting for the game.  Plus you guys got stuff in it that we didn't...

Yeah, that shit is TERRIBLE.

US version:

Other versions:

I have always, always loved ICO, but I have always, always hated the cover. So gross.

I don't think the US art is terrible, but I agree it's not nearly as good as the other versions. I believe they were inspired by Giorgio de Chirico. What really annoys me is that the version we got was really incomplete (damn annoying)! Even so, it was a great game.

Incomplete? What do you mean?

From what I've heard, the JP and EU releases had a second playthrough with expanded dialogue, a secret weapon, and various changes (such as more difficult puzzles and better AI, etc). Apparently the US version was rushed out, and hence doesn't have any of those things which should have been included (damn annoying)!

cheers,

Yeah, apparently you get to actually have a translation of yordaspeak when you play through again in the JP and EU releases.  I wish we'd gotten that, as I think it might be pretty interesting.

That Suikoden cover dilemna has always been one of my most unforgivable.  But the Phantasy Stars for Genesis got it pretty bad though too.  Check out the difference with their Mega Drive counterparts.

Are these really supposed to be the main characters?  Look at "Chaz's" hair!

Guardian Heroes also got mauled pretty badly in the U.S.  The original Japanese cover was fairly plain, with a simple logo against a black background, but check out the difference with the European version.

First of all, it just sucks.  Second of all, why is "Han" fighting the Undead Hero?

Man.

Hey, I hear what you're saying, but to be honest I actually like the US Phantasy Star covers. I think II is awesome, III is neat (except for those horrible laser-shots...why shoot the stairs??), and IV is good although the characters are kinda silly (typical Boris cover). As for the Guardian Heroes, yeah it's pretty messed-up, not sure why two heroes are fighting each other (someone messed up)...

LoLz, Phantasy Star U.S. covers look like He-Man & The Masters of the Universe covers; not to say anything disparaging of He-Man, of course.

If you want the worst in modern game covers, look no further than Europe's finest: Phoenix games. Check some of these out - http://www.phoenixgamesgroup.com/uk/playstation2a.html

That's just the PS2 section. Their whole site is a treasure trove of shit artwork.

Those games actually exist?! f--- yeah!! I wants to play CARWASH TYCOON!![/overly endearing sarcasm]

Super budget publisher is right...you actually need a PS2 to play those?

Jay Aug 3, 2007

They are absolutely real, I shit you not. Check out the copyright theft on page 3 -  'Son of the Lion King', completely unlicensed game with agodawful attempt at Disney art, the vile Snow White image too. Don't like Monkeys in your balls? Check out 'Hamster Ball' on page 2!

Peter Pan on that page is worthy of a worst artwork mention but I think Street Warrior on page 3 just beats it - http://www.phoenixgamesgroup.com/images … iorbig.jpg

But that site is well worth a browse for anyone who loves hideous box art.

Datschge Aug 3, 2007 (edited Aug 3, 2007)

From what I read about them in the past their covers are still nicer than the actual games. Seeing how they only published games on PC and Sony systems so far I'm looking forward to see how lax Nintendo's quality requirements are going to be.

Ah, here's where I remember them from, a hilarious read: http://www.pietriots.com/?p=15

Zane Aug 3, 2007

Considering that they allowed Deal or No Deal to be published on the DS, I doubt they'll be that high.

Chemist Tycoon?  (!).  And how on earth are they not getting sued to death by Disney for stuff like Dalmations 3 and whoever (Warner Bros.?) for that Dinosaur game with the art that completely rips off Land Before Time.

csK Aug 7, 2007

I don't want to come off as elitist, but I've NEVER found a Japanese cover I disliked.  Even for a few games translated to Japan, I preferred the Japanese cover to the original art: http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/ … nboxes.htm  (on this page: Prince of Persia, Ghost Recon, R&C)  It seems to me that if it isn't an 'action shot' or a 'posing (collage of characters, i.e. FFXII) shot,' Western (at least, American) companies won't use it.

Ryu Aug 7, 2007

Wow, some of those Japanese covers are honestly worse than the American ones---Ratchet series, Battalion Wars, Killzone (actually, I'd like a cross between those two covers), Ghost Recon, PsiOps (I don't like that guy's work), and I'm iffy on the Prince of Persia.

Yet at the link you provided it seems that pattern is far more common in the Japanese covers than in the original American ones.

csK Aug 7, 2007

Is it?  Doesn't seem that way to me.  But regardless, what I meant to say, is that I rarely see US covers that are not in those two genres, unless the cover is international version.
