If you are like me, sometimes you like simpler software and older versions. If you're looking to downgrade that awful AIM client or want an older version of iTunes that doesn't have the ability to sync up Ringtones, Videos and DNA to your iPhone, you should bounce to these two sites:

I very much prefer simpler software, but don't you have to worry about compatibility issues?  Like AIM's file sharing service, it always seemed to have an issue sharing with someone of a different version number when I used to have it (I use Trillian now and haven't had much of a problem).

The program that comes to my mind in this case is Winamp. I liked winamp (version 2) because it was simple. They added so much "crap" I didn't think was needed in version 3 and then even more in 5. Sure you can switch back to the "classic" player in newer versions but their are other reasons not to upgrade.

Additionally, many Winamp plugins for game music files (nsf, spc) were designed with Winamp 2 in mind, many have not been configured to work with anything higher due to their age.

I've never had a problem with Winamp 5, outside of, perhaps, the issues with game music files (mainly the SPC rar things, which seem to work sometimes and sometimes not).
What else is better about the old version?

Well, wouldn't it take less CPU? Granted the older versions crashed like freakin crazy.

I don't think I'll ever upgrade AIM past 5.2.3277.

I can't stand all that Expression garbage they added in afterwards.  File sharing is a problem, I usually can't send entire directories but you can just rar and send one file.

Google needs to come out with a standalone instant messaging platform and end it all.

Google Talk, which uses the Jabber network.

Too bad Jabber is terrible.

I guess they don't call em upgrades for a reason?

I don't know, when I was looking for a new digital camera a few months ago, I ended up buying a 2006 model I had to seek on eBay because they had gone out of production (as they usually do in a year). I probably could've bought a 2007 for equal or cheaper, but speaking about Sony cameras, they've done up new interface on their 2007 cams I've not liked. I also often avoid "Million Seller" stamped and/or "Greatest Hits" versions of games too.

Sometimes if it ain't broke...

Agreed on all counts. The only time I ever bought a GH game was for Silent Hill 2 on the PS2 because of the extra scenario. Even then, I got a double-disc PS2 case and put the extra disc in there wth the regular SH2, and then I cut out the back of the GH leaflet and slid in in front of the regular leaflet so there's no ugly red GH labels on my shelf. I did a bang-up job. Also, I am apparently crazy.

Eh, not really.  I've always refused to have greatest hits versions of anything.  It's like they're specifically trying to punish us for not buying the games at full price by making the cheaper versions as ugly as they possibly can.  I still think the original Playstation green is the worst, followed by the Gamecube yellow, with PS2 red being less offensive than either.  ...which says a lot, since that red looks pretty bad on a shelf.

Thirded (or fourthed...) about GH titles. They look really cheap and nasty on the shelf. The current gen ones all look bad (can't decide if GC or PS2 are worse-looking). I normally buy used games anyway, so I try to pick up the originals.

I'm the same way about CD's...I always think "Why would I buy a band's Greatest Hits...Why not remaster the original CD's and re-release them instead?" Well, I know why (cheap impulse purchases for less-informed buyers), but it's really lame if you want everything a group has put out and the originals are out-of-print or have that weak 80's initial mastering done. Greatest Hits that get all the tracks I actually want are a rarity (I was really annoyed the Def Leppard 2-CD one lacked my favorite song of theirs..."Stagefright", if anyone cares). I'd much rather have paid $10-$12 apiece for remastered editions of Pyromania, Hysteria and the other CD's they plucked from.

Also, I always use the classic winamp skin. The newer one is absolutely unusable and an eyesore. I got used to the newer iTunes though after a couple sessions. Having it out of date made my iPod act funny after I tried to sync it (it read empty space as being full of music, would reload EVERY piece of music instead of only stuff I added) and I think the newer one makes it MUCH easier to reset an iPod if it acts funny.

You're not alone there, "Stagefright" is an awesome song and some of the older Def Leppard albums could really use the remastering, especially "On Through the Night" considering it's age - but that one is pretty doubtful, lol. It's very different than what followed but I've always had a soft spot for their debut. I'm pretty fond of everything up to 1993's Retro active and their 1999/2000? album (which I can't remember the name of, Euphoria?) was pretty good.

Anthrax is another band that it would be really nice to see this done with too. Drives me bonkers how low the volume is on 1988's "State of Euphoria" when I listen to it. I want my "Antisocial" to be so loud it drives those near me away so I CAN be antisocial!

Sorry for that last joke, I should be linched for that one.

What can I say...It's a madhouse!

I'm fairly new to Anthrax, but I've been pretty happy with their 2 disc Anthrology compilation (from the Belladona years only) thus far. But yeah, in the stores, this and their early studio albums are all bunched together. There's no question I'd have rather paid a little extra and bought the studio albums, but I had to favor the remastering job (especially for thrash metal...listening Metallica?) and just know I missed a good portion of their stuff.

Also Guns N'Roses...Remaster Appetite for Destruction already! The GH selection is pretty bad, outside of the obvious hits and it only has the big three from Appetite (Jungle/Sweet Child/Paradise City). Of course, naturally, it's sold around 3 million copies despite having "Estranged" and stuff from their cover album taking up room...

Speaking of Greatest Hits albums and Def Leppard from earlier I wasn't very impressed with their first greatest hits effort which I think was 1995's vault. Half the tracklist was from Hysteria (granted it's a great album) but you just can't limit some bands GH albums to a single disc because it becomes laughable. The two disc "Rock of Ages" was definately an improvement.
