Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

Angela Oct 14, 2007

So, we've been forum members of Soundtrack Central for, how long now?  In that time, we've undoubtedly picked up on the general personas of one another - some slightly more in-depth than others.  The question is, just how well do we know each other?

This is how it'll work.  Choose ANY member here on the Soundtrack Central Forums that you feel you know reasonably well.  Post a write-up (brief or lengthy) on said member, based on what you know about the person.  I want to stress that the write-up should be based ONLY on information that the member has posted here on these boards themselves; you don't want to post things that a member may have shared with you in confidence, either in person or conversing through personal emails.

Try not to resort to the Search option; after all, this is to see how well you know someone based on memory and overall deductive reasoning.  Consider this a community activity.... which means keep it civil.  And, of course, discussion, addendums, and inevitable corrections are most welcome. ;)

I'll start.  I choose...... Wanderer. :)

---

Wanderer:
Right.  I know his real name is Josh.  He was formerly "J.B." on a previous version of the forums, and became "Wanderer" even before the latest forum change.   If I'm not mistaken, he's currently 27 years old, and his birthday is close to the beginning of August.  He lives in Seattle, once owned an '88 Mazda 626, now drives a '96 Mazda Protege. He owns a LG-VX8100 cell phone, and he isn't a fan of salt and vinegar potato chips.

I know that he's a fan of classical music, in addition to being trained therein.  He's getting a Sherman and Clay grand piano very soon, if he hasn't already.  He's also a film music buff, and enjoys the works of Michael Giacchino, John Williams, Alan Silvestri, Howard Shore, some Hans Zimmer, among others -- but he does not enjoy John Powell.  In terms of VGM, he is a fan of Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masashi Hamauzu, though with the latter, he has a preference more toward his electronica musical style rather than orchestral.

I know that he never finished the original GC version of Resident Evil 4, but wants to try out the Wii Edition.  Out of the two Zelda Oracle games, he likes Ages better than Seasons.  His favorite Zelda title of all time is A Link To The Past.  He once stated that the video game game character most like himself is FFVIII's Selphie.  His one and only imported game was Legend of Mana.  He hasn't played very many shooters, save for Gradius V.  Finally, he just got a DS, started to get into the Phoenix Wright series (good man!), and he's currently up to the second game.

GoldfishX Oct 14, 2007 (edited Oct 14, 2007)

I'm going to try...Crash (I probably know Dragon God the best offline, but he's been inactive on STC).

Crash posts infrequently, but I know his tastes mirror my own (at least in terms of rock/melodic music...I know he favors and is more familiar with more of the music from various Bemani games than I am). Long ago (98-99-ish), partially based on his recommendations, I got into both Tokimeki Memorial and Falcom's material (more specifically, the Ys Perfect Collections and Turbo Duo games...Falcom was kind of intimidating to just jump right into, cold turkey), which have been two of the most enjoyable franchises I've come across. He imports a lot of games (mostly Bemani ones) and is excited about playing "Cliffs of Dover" in Guitar Hero III. I believe he is fairly new to Final Fantasy and the Ys series was his main RPG exposure growing up, so he was in the vast minority of people who own/owned a Turbo Duo. He's also a fellow Guilty Gear and Konami Battle music fan and hates random sound effects tracks.

Personal details are REALLY sketchy...Feel free to post corrections as needed. Real name is Jeff Samu. He has always been Crash as far as I've known, although I don't know the origin. I believe he lives in Chicago, he takes a train to work everyday and is married. I remember him saying his ideal work situation is an expatriate set-up to a foreign country. Once, he tried to go an entire month without spending any money...I don't think he posted a follow-up to this, but this is something I've considered as well (since the credit card bill just kind of jumps out at you at the end of the month). Crash strikes me as being very laid back...I don't recall a single argumentative or offensive post in over nine years. And...That's about it.

Crash Oct 14, 2007 (edited Oct 15, 2007)

Now, do we take the opportunity to correct the comments made about us?  smile  For the record, I am not married (and have a lot of philosophical issues with the concept of marriage), I now live in Minneapolis, and I was successful at going an entire month without spending any money.  The nickname was due to my habit of getting into car accidents; thankfully I really don't drive that much anymore.

I'll try to write up what (I think) I know about Stephen.  Stephen is 31 years old, and his birthday is in April or May.  He lives in New York.  He has been the webmaster for several VGM-related sites, including Cocoebiz, Chudah's Corner, and (I think) Cloud's Villa.  He posts fairly infrequently on this site (even less so than me), and is married.  He is honest and thoughtful, has an easy-going personality, and doesn't try to pick any fights.  His posts are never inflammatory, and generally very concise.

Stephen likes to have a fairly manageable VGM collection (around 50 or so).  He tends to sell off older albums that he no longer listens to when his collection gets too big, and all of his sales are at very reasonable prices.  He appreciates Falcom music, and was one of my early guides into the mystical land of Falcom.  His greatest VGM quest is to get all of the Ys IV Perfect Collections (I think he is at 2 out of 3, but he might have all 3 by now).  He also has a taste for Sakuraba, and had quite a few Guilty Gear albums, although I think most of those have been sold by now.  His sale of the first two Ys Perfect Collections about nine years ago or so was what clued me into the fact that I needed to watch these sales boards like a hawk; I noticed his posting a few hours after he offered them for sale, and they had already been sold.  He had an interest in DDR back in the past, and even opened a new sub-forum to cover DDR on Cloud's Villa back in 2000 or so (which was populated for the most part by Stephen, Angela/Sans, Schala, and me).

His eBay ID is the same as a popular Neo-Geo game.  He once tried to get a copy of Popful Mail Sound Box '94 on eBay back in 1999 or so, and there was a big fight on the forums about making sure that STC members got all of the rare albums that this seller was trying to sell, and trying to ensure that no one bid against each other (at the time, prices for these albums were sky high, and he was involved in a bidding war with Moonraiser on this particular album).  I think he ended up getting outbid for this album, and I don't know if he ever ended up getting a copy.  The reason this sticks out in my mind is because it reveals a lot about his character.  When others made it clear how much they wanted something, he put his own desires aside and let them have it.

Zane lives in the Boston area, likes to drink and stuff, is a metalhead and a nice guy. The_miker has like taste in music (loves everything from Akira Yamaoka to old school Kukeiha Club arranges), Kirin Lemon from a VG hub can be a fierce fighter at times, Angela is one of our only confirmed females (right?) who'se considered one of the all-timers on his forum, Conn got married, we wished him well before he disappeared, composes his own music and recently had a reprisal, Goldfish X likes a lot of SNK music, but HATED Capcom Vs. SNK with a passion, Kenology believes 9/11 was a conspiracy and fought hard to make the case, XLord007 always chimes in and catches my attention (could be the avatar or my own love for Bond). *gasps* Longhairmike cut his hair for the sake of his job, Jodo Kast and Carl are the fathers of bringing game music to the masses (much of it we have him to thank for it) and Jodo always brings up the most obscure, thought-provoking 'other' topics, has learned Japanese, BaMaTone spells his name all crazy and sold me some album once (also a nice guy), Qui-Gon Joe lives in Japan....

If I've forgotten you, I'll just have to keep watching you...

XLord007 Oct 15, 2007 (edited Oct 15, 2007)

I choose Angela.  This is probably cheating since she reveals more about herself than most people here do, but someone has to take the easy way out, and I got here first. ;-)

Angela is in her mid-twenties and resides in New York.  She enjoys cooking, working multiple jobs, and consuming mass quantities of entertainment, especially video games and films.  She is a hardcore gamer and an avid fan of twitch genres such as action, fighting, and shooters.  She also enjoys Japanese RPGs and adores Rhythm/Action and any over-the-top quirky "Japanesey" games.  Her favorite series is the Metal Gear series.

When she really likes a movie, she will see it numerous times in theaters, buy every DVD version and every soundtrack version that accompanies it.  She particularly likes the Pirates and Lord of the Rings films.  She may even have a crush on Viggo (all women have a crush on Johnny Depp, so that's a given).

Angela rountinely solicits feedback for potential purchases whether the purchase is of a new TV, DVD, video game, or motorcycle, and she always reports back her findings after the purchase.  A major gadget freak, Angela owns multiple cell phones and duplicate versions of portable game systems and digital music players.

As a poster, she generally avoids joining topics that go too far off topic such as the many political rants, Jodo's musings, and topics about real life romantic relationships.  One of the few female members of STC, she has been openly hit on by the male members more than any other female member.

All in all, Angela is one of STC's most-tenured regulars; her well-written postings display her obvious intelligence, considerable knowledge, and personable demeanor, and her quirky sense of humor and willingness to fight for what she believes in make her a valuable contributor.

Well that's who I am picking. I'll try to use board-only info, I'm pretty sure everything I'm about to say, he's mentioned here before.

"McCall"
---
Those who have followed him for a long time know his real name is Connary (I won't reveal his last name because he doesn't like having it revealed). He is a member of the LDS ("Mormon") church. He recently got married. He lives in Colorado, fairly close to the "Columbine" area.

His favorite gaming company is probably Falcom. He loves Falcom, and he also loves the Genso Suikoden series. He regularly buys a LOT of unique Falcom materials, only to sell them later for good prices (which we all appreciate).

He writes his own music, and aspires to eventually be some sort of "hired" musician (TV, film, gaming, solo work, whatever). His music has taken various forms, from electronica/techno to synthesized-classical, and everything in-between. His music, if I may say so, is awesome.

He's written a lot of reviews for RPGFan, at my request. As such, I <3 him immensely.

I also think my first interaction with McCall was YEARS ago, back in like 2000, when I bought some Falcom lot from him on eBay. It was my first taste of Falcom, and since then, I haven't had enough. smile

I am a two-time owner of the Ys IV Perfect Collections.  Is that a record around here? heh  I obtained all three a few years ago, sold them at a break-even cost, and reacquired 2 of them at a lower cost.  I only recently got the Vol. 3 here at StC but only because the disc was scratched.  I was able to remove the scratches.

Crash wrote:

Correct.  I got tired of the GG music.  I own no GG music now.

The rest of Crash's knowledge of me is pretty much accurate.  He should be a private eye.

People already commented on Zane, Crash, and Angela, people I know more about.

I know a little bit about Amber.
Amber is female.  She used to work for Creative Labs in the customer service department. She used to live in Oklahoma (CloudV also lived somewhere there).  She is extremely knowledgeable about sound cards, audio formats, and audio/game ripping.  She was a big fan of Valkyrie Profile.  Her other online identity is Audigy.  She knew a guy named Neil Corbett, who was knowledgeable about game ripping and emulation.  She is now married, but she does not appear to be in Oklahoma anymore.  She used to post a lot more here, but she is now posting infrequently.

I'm going to choose longhairmike! Let's see what I can remember without using the search function...

Mike and his fiancé live in a condo in the greater Chicago area, where they have adorable bunnies. He's an old rocker that works for a courier service that made him cut his hair a couple of years ago. He has/had license plates that said "CHOCOBO" and runs a Pullip doll online store.

As far as his forum behavior goes, Mike generally makes sporadic and short posts that gently poke fun (and make me laugh) at other posts without being offensive or confrontational. I got a good chuckle out of the FFVII OST he has with holes in the middle of his CDs.

On a personal note, Mike sold me my first official OST (FFVIII) and helped me steer clear of bootlegs over seven years ago. Two horns waaaaay up!! \m/ \m/

I remember reading about this...I believe it was Ys Piano Collection 2.

And one addendum on longhairmike: He used to own an airplane, but he sold it and re-bought a lot of soundtracks he had sold earlier with the funds. I always think "Hey, that's the guy who used to own an airplane" when I see mike's name pop up.

One other tidbit that occasionally draws a nostalgic chuckle: When "The Place" went under, I remember he bought 3 whole cases of FFVIII soundtracks from them and ebayed them (he got them for $10 apiece and used $20 BIN's...also used a long anti-bootleg themed item description with a picture of him in a Chocobo shirt at the end). Zane, I think yours might have been one of them...The timeframe sounds about right.

Keee-rect (the MUSIC to Capcom vs SNK and Satoshi Ise in general anyway...I have a guilty passion for the games, even the broken-as-all-hell-Nakaruru-assrapes-everyone first one) And to return the favor, you hate nearly all SNK music (save for Art of Fighting 3's arranged soundtrack) and love the majority of Capcom's (only Capcom soundtrack I remember you hated was Fighting Jam) and Konami's soundtracks, particularly the ones that are mostly jazz-fusion.

Ashley Winchester Oct 15, 2007 (edited Oct 16, 2007)

I'll do Zane...

As the stern face in his avatar suggests Zane (Tommy) is not afraid to jump into conversation. While his statements may seem harsh at times they're always meant in good fun, even if what if he is stating is his dead serious opinion on something.

Unlike me, Zane has had the mojo to follow certain game series (Metroid, Tomb Raider) into the future while I've been stuck on 32-bit incarnations and below. Zane also hates having greatest hit versions of games plaguing his game collection with their inferior green/red color scheme and the overuse of bloom and shadow/darkness to make make games look more "realistic."

Yes, that was the album.  All 3 were going for insane amounts.  None of these albums got reprinted by Falcom, so they retain a relatively high asking price.

Good for you, Zane. And to Goldfish, you're right about most but I've tried to give a lot of SNK music a chance. I don't have much history with SNK but nor do I with Falcom and I love a lot of [arranged] music from their many franchises but most of it doesn't appeal. There's a few arranged tracks I dig on the KOF Arrange Sound Trax (typically the Saxophone Storms and or most Iori themes).

Capcom fouled up much in its day at not doing much arranging (annually) for its fighting games...

Marcel Oct 17, 2007

I don't know much about you guys since I'm merely a long-standing lurker but I do remember that Schala lives in Hawaii and that longhairmike used to have this wicked plane which, I believe he sold or had to stop flying for some reason.

Jodo Kast Oct 17, 2007

Not very well. I read that nearly 70% of communication is done with body language, so I have no idea how any of you act in person. I first discovered this site when I was 23 and didn't make a post for nearly 8 months. I know that I contacted a few people in early 2000, and one of them was Kevin Murphy (I could be wrong about that name, but that's what I recall). He agreed to send me a CDR copy of Dracula New Classic for a copy of Dragon Warrior Digital Sound Explosion (a Son May release, renamed; I didn't know it was a bootleg and Kevin probably didn't know either). The copy he sent me of DNC skipped horribly; I ceased contact with Kevin. I shortly thereafter discovered a site called 'Cloud's Villa', prior to the summer of 2000.

I contacted Carl Larson and I bought some CDR copies of stuff I was curious about. I next contacted Cloud (Robert Estel) and ordered 50 CDR copies. He was quite amazed by my order and even though his CD copier broke in the process, he managed to make every copy. It took him several months as I recall. These days, one could easily make 50 CDR copies in one day. The fact that it took a few months ought to give you an idea as to how technology has advanced since 2000. Anyway, I learned that Carl and Robert, among a hundred others, are trustworthy.

Wanderer Oct 17, 2007

Okay, I just moved and I got my cable back so I apologize for making it to this late.

Angela: Your memory is astonishing!

Alright, here's the updates and corrections (although there's very little of those). I got the piano two months ago and it looks really nice in the apartment... although it desperately needs its warranty tuning (having been moved twice).

The '96 Mazda Protege was sadly smashed into by a drunk driver two weeks ago and was promptly replaced by a '93 Ford Escort that I don't like nearly as much (although it *was* cheap and it gets me to work).

As far as Hamauzu goes, I actually like his orchestral over the electronic... although it can be a lot of fun when he mixes the two of them together. wink I'm not a big fan of the electronic genre but I'll admit that he does it better than most.

Never finished the GC Resident Evil 4 but I did watch a friend play through the opening of the Wii version. It was amusing watching his eyes widen when a zombie sneaked up on him. It's far creepier when you're actually holding the gun (Wii controller).

Oh, and for the record, out of all the MV graduates, I like John Powell the most. "The Bourne Ultimatum" is a guilty pleasure of mine (although irritatingly chopped up in the movie) and "X-Men 3" is terrific.

He once stated that the video game game character most like himself is FFVIII's Selphie.

Oh god. Can I take that back? tongue

Angela Oct 17, 2007

XLord, you nailed me nice.  Thank you, I appreciate your compliments. :)

You can keep Viggo and Depp, though.  After "At World's End," this ol' heart belongs to Jack Davenport, bless Norrington's soul.

Ah, apologies for that.  I vaguely remember you expressing distaste at the idea of Powell doing X-Men 3 back when it was announced, hence my general deduction.  I wholeheartedly agree with you (as well as Razakin) on Bourne Ultimatum, though; it and Supremacy have become a staple in my current listening diet.  Sorry to hear about the Protege.  You weren't hurt, were you?

Oh god. Can I take that back? :p

Ah, apologies for that.  I vaguely remember you expressing distaste at the idea of Powell doing X-Men 3 back when it was announced, hence my general deduction.

I probably did at the time... but shortly afterwards, I got more acquainted with the composer. He especially had a great and diverse 2006.

I saw Bourne Ultimatum a few weeks ago and was completely blown away. I actually thought I was having a panic attack halfway through, it was so intense...

Sorry to hear about the Protege.  You weren't hurt, were you?

Nah... The ensuing paperwork was more painful than the crash itself. Like most "OMG, I'M GONNA DIE" moments, time completely slowed in the second it took for the car to hit me... and instead of bothering to check if I was okay, he drove away! Fortunately, two women in a nearby car restored my faith in humanity and chased him down to get the license plate. wink It probably goes without saying that I didn't mind staying out of the driver's seat for the week afterwards.

Whatsamatter?  Don't like trains anymore? ;p

I never liked trains. tongue Selphie was probably the only thing I liked about FFVIII (aside from some of the music).

Hope you're enjoying that piano!

I'm working on it. Because it's so much louder than the old one, I actually feel pretty self-conscious playing it, knowing how many people are in apartments around me. But it's hard not to love a piano that actually has a middle pedal. wink

I guess in the context of the joke, I would mean only for Ramza. I was playing on his desperation for love and my desperation for $50.

As for how long, that all depends on how he wants to be loved. Materially, sexually, physically, emotionally, mentally . . . time would vary between them, I think.
