This is so simple and affordable when compared to buying video game music. Just about everything is in print and the prices are considerably cheaper. So far, I have only uncovered one DVD I want that is OOP and expensive:

http://www.amazon.com/Scent-Green-Papay … 09-6636401

Here are some I want that don't seem to have a non-PAL version available:

Phantasm II (parts I, III, and IV all have NTSC releases)
Class of 1999 (stars Malcom McDowell)

My DVD player does convert PAL to NTSC, but the image doesn't look quite right, so I avoid PAL DVDs.

I just recently bought some Akira Kurosawa, Ingmar Bergman, and Andrei Tarkovsky films. I've watched 'The Seventh Seal' and 'Solaris' so far. I actually don't know anyone I could recommend them to; one would have to be able to tolerate a film that focuses on story and not special effects.

Domestic CD's are good too, for the same reason. For the price of 5 VGM CD's, I can get the entire remastered discographies for AC/DC AND Judas Priest (well, at least the albums I like and not counting live albums...but that's still about 20 CD's or so). Most bands I can be over and done with what I pay in shipping alone for a typical VGM order. It's a good feeling looking at a $13.99 price sticker and thinking how expensive it is, then consider an average VGM 1-disc album is twice that.

Feels very strange, actually...New and exciting ways to totally rape my shelf space.

i might get TERMINATOR 2 JD on bluRay as an early Christmas present

it's kinda funny, i was watching the early scene where he goes into the hick bar and they keep showing cuts of his viewpoint (the SCANNING mode)
.

It's very well-done, but it should be a bit tighter (like when he sees the three-leveled Name of the Bar it should've gone like 'chiff-chiff-chiff'. the Jukebox should be quickly chiffed right after the person standing next to it is, and so should the bottle of beer that-that one guy is holding, the two lamp-lights adjacent to each other at the entrance should get a quick 'chiff-chiff', the waitress who admires Arnold's package should be chiffed while <i>behind<i/> the partition instead of waiting until she gets so close to him, etc..)

Cameron's still quite a trendsetter though.

Well, unless you get into the world of rare record collecting.  I have to say, then it becomes much harder then VGM!

That's because he was an inferior model wink

I own both a multi-region TV as well as a multi-region DVD player; I am not sure if they make them in the states or not, but, it would solve your worries about the picture.

Dunno...Doujins still have that foreign barrier surrounding them and OOP ones even go for high $$$ on Yahoo Japan. But I think the door's been shut on the vast majority of the official VGM stuff (due to sellers like coco and our professional hunters like Carl and SS...), so yeah...Start factoring in how many bands there are, their demos, their fanbases and how hard it is to find their early and even heavily-popular stuff can be. I like the Bangles, but I'll live with their greatest hits instead of their 80's albums for $50-$60 a pop. Nice to own, but...Yeesh.

Most people don't even know Guns'N'Roses had a remastered gold disc release of both Appetite for Destruction and the Use Your Illusions. Close to 42 million copies of those albums originally sold and I can't even find a torrent for such a thing (thankfully, someone knew about the early Metallica ones...So much better than those crappy early-mid 80's presssings).

But yeah, that was mostly an in-print comparison.

I try to buy as few DVDs as possible since I pretty much never watch any of the ones I buy.  At least I actually listen to my game music CDs regularly, even if they cost a lot more.

Same here.

I seem to have that same thing too.  I buy DVD's of shows that I like, and are my favorites and such and watched originally on TV or saw in the theatre.  Yet, most of the time, they sit there on the shelf, unopened or unwatched.  For example, even though I have every season of Star Trek: TNG on DVD, I'll sit down and watch the episode in lower quality if I happen to flip to Space or Spike TV.  Why do you suppose that is?  Very weird.  Or is it that I'm just extremely lazy?? haha

I don't think I have listened to an actual CD in years...... all digital, all the time.

I used to always sleep with headphones on, with my discman on the floor near the bed. It seems so strange (now) to have done such a thing. A discman only played CDs, which could only hold 80 minutes worth of music (pre-MP3 era). For some reason, I no longer go to sleep with music. It would seem more logical for me to do it now, because of the ultra large storage capacities of portable MP3 players. In fact, I haven't used headphones to listen to music for nearly 2 years now. This is a mystery indeed. This is my own behavior and I'm not even sure what is going on...

I do have a suspicion. Original CDs require no preparation before listening. One merely loads it into the CD player and listens. Perhaps it was the convenience of CDs that led to me to use them so frequently. The purely digital (which is considered more convenient), is actually more time consuming.

TerraEpon Nov 8, 2007

I still find CDs a lot more convenient for portability. I have way too many Mp3s and always have to swap out, etc.

It REALLY sucks that there are very few new portable CD players made, and they all suck...and my current one is on its last legs. Ugh, I just wanna punch someone.

Yeah, me too. I only own a few movies: Jurassic Park (favorite movie ever), X-Files: Fight the Future (to compliment my box sets), The 40 Year Old Virgin (gift from a friend, funny movie) and Spinal Tap (classic). Almost all of my DVD collection is comprised of television shows that I like to watch more than once: The X-Files, The Office, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm (although my enthusiasm for the show is dwindling) and Twin Peaks.

Sabreman Nov 8, 2007

I'm an absolute junkie for films, whether it's been VHS and Laserdisc in the past or DVDs now. I've just passed 600 in my collection in fact, but I get over the storage issue by keeping the discs themselves in CD wallets and bunging all the cases in the loft.

Ironically I am quite a fan of the idea of digital storage, and I look forward to the day when I can simply have a huge capacity, stable storage device for all the films I want.

It's probably the laziness. At least, it is for me. Having to take the discs out or change them requires much more effort than I'm usually willing to expend on an average day. When I do watch my TV show DVDs, it's at least a few episodes in a row.
