Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

Cybernator (Assault Suits Valken) is really ace.  Did I mention that before?  If not, its superb, I loved the atmosphere of the game with this jazzy music playing while huge explosions cover the screen meanwhilst getting Japanese messages from your COs - crazy stuff.

I'm off to university again in a week, so I'll be packing up my SNES for storage.  Its a bit sad, there were many games I wanted to get into during this break!

So, I'm thinking of buying "Mystical Ninja" for the SNES on the VC.  Yes? No?  OMG?!?!

Go for it, I'm certain you won't regret it.  ^_^  Lemme know if they got rid of or replaced the silly password save system for the VC release.

Another vote for Mystical Ninja. Never played the SNES game (my first experience with Goemon was the N64 game) so I was surprised at how fun it is.

Angela: It autosaves the state of the game. Don't all VC games do that?

I know that Sin & Punishment does not.  It's the only VC game I've downloaded, so I can't speak for others.

I fired up my SNES last week to check out FF3 again and... thirteen hours and two days later I was in the World of Ruin. So much for just "checking it out" - I'm hooked again! Man, playing this makes me realize how totally different the FF series became from FFVII on. Need more Cactuar + Drill action, dammit.

Agreed.  I had a similar experience with Final Fantasy IV on the GBA.  I started playing it again for nostaligic's sake and 2 days later I was waist deep in one of the finest moments on the SNES.  Truly masterful in every sense of the word.

Man, if I had some extra time, I'd love to sit down and trudge through Earthbound again.

I'm honestly terrified of playing my copy of FF3 (or any of my battery backup SNES games) again in fear of finding out that the battery is dead. I wish there was some way to transfer my saves to a computer so I could preserve my stats/scores. Heh, now I know how George felt when he tried to move that Frogger machine.

13 hours to get to the World of Ruin?! Must've taken me at least twice that long my first time, though I don't remember if I finished it any faster on the GBA port. I still have the urge to play again, but I think I'll wait for the inevitable DS port before giving it another run-through.

I love pulling out the guide every once in a while to relive (and re-smell) the memories.

I wouldn't worry too much.  My SNES batteries were STILL working of only a few months ago (last I checked.)

I have a ROM copier that backs up as a SRAM copier though, so I've thrown all of my save-data on floppies tongue  Found it at a Chinatown store in NYC, maybe you'll find something similar.

Picked up Legend of the Mystical Ninja from some yard sale this weekend (you wouldn't believe this guy's stuff!) for like 6 bucks.  I'll give it a shot (wish me luck Angela!).

Good luck, my friend.  I'm sure you're gonna enjoy it, so long as you can put up with the infuriating password system.

Least you don't have to worry about battery backup failure, though. :)

Yessir. I pretty much blew through the first portion of the game. I kept going back to my old Nintendo Power strategy guide to see if I could do anything else besides level up, and I didn't have anything else to do. I'm getting close to the end of the game already... I have a few sidequests to do, gotta get Gogo and Shadow, and then it's off to Kefka's Tower. Best RPG ever.

Well, that is pretty nice, but is damn awesome. Of course, most of the bosses are killed by manipulated Joker Dooms / Reverse Joker Dooms, but still 4 hours and 48 minutes (SDA timing, video is of course a bit longer) to complete FF VI is just mindblowing, especially when it's single-segment.

allyourbaseare Apr 7, 2008

I checked out that site:  Speed Demos Archives and some of the times are just mind-boggling.  32 mintues for Super Metroid?!  Just over 6 minutes for Diablo?  And, my favourite thus far, Megaman X5 in just over 10 minutes.  Apparently I'm doing something wrong. wink

Too bad about some of the responses though.  A lot of people these days are so sure that the PS1/PS2 were better, and yet they've hardly explored the SNES library beyond the obvious Mario, Zelda, and Metroid stuff.  Not to mention the import titles, which only further cement how great the SNES was.

True, but anyone that uses Kingdom Hearts as a reason as to why the PS2 is better than the SNES doesn't have the right to be taken seriously. tongue

Or saying that Jak, Sly, and R&C give Mario a run for his money. hmm

But yeah, that RPG list is a joke compared to the likes of Chrono Trigger, FFVI, Secret of Mana, Earthbound...  Shoot, I could've picked a better four than those, and I think that the PS2 comes in third behind the SNES (best) and PS1 (second best) in the RPG department.

The PS1 definately overshadows the PS2 in my opinion... my experiences with RPGs didn't begin until the PS1 although I did backtrack and play some of the essentals on the SNES. Overall, I favor the PS1 era the most but give more props to the titles on the SNES.

FuryofFrog Apr 19, 2008

Im totally a supporter of the SNES is the best console idea. If you really look at any of the old consoles and you try to go back to the games you once played a lot of them are hard to go back to. With the PS1 its the graphics and loading times (clearly it had good graphics at the time but lets face it, they didnt age well) and it makes it a bear sometimes to play older titles, NES was awesome but at the same time other than a few ultra refined games like SMB3 the stiffness of the controls really can hamper the experience and the N64's controller makes me ask myself how did I ever get used to the damn thing in the first place. IMO SNES is the easiest to go back to a title, get used to the controls again quickly and just enjoy a game in the same manner you would 15 years ago. The top for me has to be SNES because despite the time that has flown by I will still play CastleVania 4, Mario, or Chrono Trigger anytime of the day. Isnt it a coincidence that the GBA and DS are the most popular handhelds around today? I mean while it never could be the SNES it harkens back to the era very well.

1.SNES
2.PS2
3.DS

btw I saw someone mention this earlier but Zane you need to get a hold of Lost Vikings if you already havent. Its on the same level as Zombies Ate my Neighbors

To come back to the original topic, has anyone here played AND completed the following SNES games, and which one would you say is the "best" (for you),and which one has the most interesting music(I know this is quite subjective,but...):
Treasure Hunter G
Rudora No Hihou
Live a Live
Bahamut Lagoon
Dragon Quest VI

Played all except Dragon Quest VI. The castle theme from it is awesome, though.

Generally, I can say that all the Square's SNES RPGs that were released outside of Japan were better than those that weren't. (Except FF5, perhaps.) All of them are rather unique and definitely.

Treasure Hunter G I've played and completed. The battle system was pretty interesting - similar to SRPGs, you've got action points to spend on moving around and attacking. One unique feature from this game is that before sleeping in an inn you're characters would have a conversation. The music is certainly one of the most interesting on SNES. 7 composers! Even if you're a Sakimoto hater like me, there's still a very good chance you'll like John Pee's contributions.

Rudora No Hihou I've almost completed. Unique feature I've liked - you control 3 parties during a course of 15 days. The parties cross paths a few times. On the last day their leaders join together and an additional character heads the new party. Unique feature I disliked - you don't learn spells, instead you make them up by writing words. It gets another bad point because the only difference between characters is their stats. Music is pretty awesome. Composed by Ryuji Sasai. Love the character themes.

Live A Live I didn't come far, but what I've seen was great. Starts with a few unrelated plots, set in different time periods and settings. Later all characters join together for one big adventure. The music score happens to be my favourite from Yoko Shimomura. It's as diverse as the settings featured. I'd say it's my 3rd favourite SNES score, right after FF6 and Chrono Trigger.

Bahamut Lagoon I didn't play much as I found it pretty bad. It's an SRPG where your attacks could affect the surroundings - burn woods, destroy bridges, etc. The unique feature, raising an army of dragons, is very unbalanced. You can get too powerful early and easily, that's what ruins the game for me. And maybe it's just the fan translation, but some characters act really weird. smile Music wise, the only track I liked is Jojo. I'm not a big fan of Noriko Matsueda.

csK Apr 19, 2008

I love the SNES but I don't know if I agree with the article's premise that the PSX isn't one of the great consoles... hasn't really played a good deal of PS games.  Theres a reason that system is known as the 'spiritual successor' to the SNES.

GoldfishX Apr 20, 2008

As far as RPG's go, I think it's between SNES and PS1. SNES has a limited selection, but it turns out it spawned some of the greatest RPG's ever. PS1 has quite a few games I dislike very much and a lot I'm totally indifferent to, but the classics are every bit as classic as their SNES breathren. So, it's equal as far as classics, but PS1 has a lot more games I dislike, so...But I guess that's the price you pay for selection.

PS2? Yes, it has a lot of variety and some definite classics, but it's also the console my interest in RPG's basically died on. Ys VI, Suikoden V, Growlanser 2 and La Pucelle were amazing, but I don't feel a strong attraction to anything else on the system from an RPG standpoint (unless you count Phantasy Star IV on the Genesis Collection. ;p). Although it's ironic that Tri-Ace is the driving force behind my PS1 RPG support and such a non-factor in the PS2.

Domestically, yes.  Overall, I think the SNES RPG library actually exceeds that of the PSX by a bit.

http://alexandria.rpgclassics.com/system.php?system=PSX

When I look at games like Tactics Ogre, Der Langrisser, FE series, DQ series, SMT series, and Terranigma, I think that the SNES's import library cements it as the all time best console for RPGs.  Notice that I didn't even mention any of the Square ones...  Add those and a winnar is the SNES.

However, PS1 has some of my personal favorites as well (Valkyrie Profile, Legend of Mana, Star Ocean 2, FFT), so I have no problem with the 'they're both great' position from the folks who were reared on PS1 RPGs. (in fact, it makes me happy when folks who were exposed to 3D RPGs early on can appreciate the 2D ones just the same; also, I'm not specifically addressing you with that one, GFX - I don't know what your RPG history is)  After all, I was reared on SNES RPGs, and I don't expect everyone who wasn't to see them the same way. (and yeah, I know that some PS1-reared RPGers wind up favoring the SNES RPGs and some SNES-reared RPGers favoring the PS1 RPGs, but there are always exceptions to the rule)  Maybe it's not important to say that one was better than the other.  Only that Square was a disappointment on the PS2 compared to what they did on the SNES and PS1, which is something I think that we can all agree on.  Yeah, Atlus and NIS did well, but there were good RPGs from the other guys on the SNES and PS1 as well, so a strong Square + good efforts from others beats a weak Square + good efforts from others.

After almost 30 hours in FF3, I am at Kefka's Tower, ready to beat some ass! Here are my stats:

- Every character that can learn magic has learned every spell possible. Well, except for Gau because he sucks. Still. Yeah, I know, powerful Rages and all that, but I'm not going to put the time in learning them, especially since all of them aren't even available in the game! I'm looking at you, Allo Ver.

- All characters have all of their personal skills except for Strago, who needs to learn Forcefield from Doom. I'm not including Gau in this , which I just typed out as "Gay" by accident. Twice.

- All characters are at least at level 45.

- This game proves that I don't dislike RPGs, I just dislike shitty ones.

csK May 1, 2008

Haha, I remember maxing out my characters out too.  Actually in hindsight if there is one flaw with F.F. III, is that by the end of the game assuming you have been fighting a decent amount, you can turn everyone into a nearly identical tank knowing every advanced skill.

I'm going home this weekend and I hope to get into some SNES game for the next two weeks.  But... what?  DKC?  Yoshi's Island?  Super Mario Kart?  Hmm.

Super Mario RPG. I've been replaying the game lately. Still as classic as it was over ten years ago.

Couldn't wait for the Virtual Console release, which could take forever.

Maxing out everyone's magic is something I've always wanted to do, but never had the patience to. Ironically, I finally did it during a time where I've been finding out that I have less and less patience for games. Go figure! The end battles were pretty simple considering that I had Strago in the back row with Gem Box/Economizer and all of his Lores... but I still had a blast. I'm probably going to beat the game again this weekend just to enjoy it one more time. One thing I noticed is that Goddess started kicking my ass when I first fought her! Well, turns out I forgot to equip my party so everyone had no relics and no equipment... but I still won. wink

Depends on the genre. If you want to get sucked in by a longer game I would of course recommend FF3 again. Action/platforming, DKC or DKC2. Slower action game? Castlevania IV or Demon's Crest. Man, I love me some SNES. I still come back to this thread pretty often to check older recommendations and beef up my collection. smile

Super Mario RPG is indeed a classic, but I hated those damn hidden treasure chests. I spent hours searching for that last one in literally every area, only to find out that you only have a split second to get it at the beginning of the game >_<  I ended up replaying the whole game just for that one chest. Really, I can't stand it when you can "miss" things in RPGs. That also goes for saving Shadow in FF III.

Zane wrote:

Cactuar FTW. I never did get all of Strago's Lores or Gau's Rages, though. I hated the randomness of the Veldt.

Every once in a while I'll pull out FF III just to see the ending again (at one point I had it on VHS, but I taped over it). After Earthbound, it's probably my next favorite in terms of tying up loose ends.

So, I recently finished playing through Breath of Fire again and was shocked to discover how much my fondness for the story was clouded by nostalgia. For instance, I somehow thought that Nina's disappearance midway through the game was a lot more emotional and poignant than it actually was. Instead, she sort of just disappears and shows up again a few minutes later.

Thankfully, a lot of my other memories of the game still held up well. My friends and I searched everywhere for the Agni spell. I remember my joy when I finally stumbled upon it, and it was just as enjoyable this time around.

Seriously... but I ended up fighting a TON of Hoovers. It was ok, because that's how I got a ton of EXP, and I'd just exploit Vanish/X-Zone for those bastards.
