A recent post made me think of how much I loved the title to this NES game:

Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom

and so I ask, what games have great titles? Keep in mind a game might be crap, but still have a great title (or vice-versa)! Did you ever purchase a game based primarily on the title? Of course these days every game gets reviewed by 20 different magazines, but back in the day (think pre PSX) there were little to no reviews, and frankly some titles just stood out!

ps I shudder to ask, but what are your top 5 worst titles for a game?

That is the worst title for a game. Ever. The Japanese word "Chiiyure" was being used to describe a trend in gaming and anime wear women would have super bouncy boobs (Dead or Alive volleyball ... you're our prime target!). But apparently these developers decided to cash in on a fad and put "Chiiyure" in the subtitle of their game. Shameless booby action.

I thought "Secret of Mana" was an awesome name when I was a kid. Turns out, it was an awesome game too, and I'm glad I bought it.

Hehe  I got a kick out of that! Also, you reminded me, 'Secret of Evermore' (another Square game) had a similar but in my opinion slightly cooler title smile The game itself was underrated in my opinion, and was a blast, not to mention that the soundtrack by Jeremy Soule is fantastic (if you're lucky enough to have a copy)!

"Hitler no Fukkatsu: Top Secret" comes to mind, but I'm not sure whether to classify it as the best or the worst.

However, I am quite sure that the upcoming Kingdom Hearts games (258/2 Days and Birth by Sleep) have among the worst titles ever. It must be Square's way of saying "We can name these anything we want and you'd still buy them as long as they have Kingdom Hearts in the title."

Sadly, yes. I bought "Superstar Dance Club: #1 Hits" knowing full well that it would be an awful, low-budget DDR ripoff, but I wanted to give my DDR-obsessed friend a funny joke gift.

On a happier note, I got "The Curse of Monkey Island" because, as we all know, monkeys are cool. The game was awesome, and I ended up being sucked into the world of LucasArts adventure games because of it.

Well, I was drawn to this homebrew game by its name, if that counts: http://kayin.pyoko.org/iwbtg/index.php

Other awesome titles:

Hunt the Wumpus
Mutation Nation
Ephemeral Fantasia
Chakan: The Forever Man
Silhouette Mirage
Zombies Ate My Neighbors

And some unbrilliant ones...

Street Fighter EX + Alpha
Megaman Xtreme
Zill O'll Infinite
ASO: Armored Scrum Object
Big Nose Freaks Out
Zool: Ninja of the Nth Dimension

EDIT: Forgot another good one: Bunny Must Die.

The two that come to mind:

Ninja Gaiden, Part II: The Dark Sword of Chaos
- the subtitle "The Dark Sword of Chaos" personifies the game extremely well

Wild Arms: 2nd Ignition
- I like the original Japanese subtitle "2nd Ignition" because Media.Vision stuck gold yet again - "ignition" = "right on target!"

Doesn't get much better than "Ganbare Goemon Neo-Momoyama bakufu no Odori" or "Ganbare Goemon and the Dance of the New Momoyama Shogunate", boringly translated as "Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon" in the West.
