Just a quick question, but I was just reminded of this.  What does "えええええ" signify?  The best I was able to get with a Google search, was, well nothing.  I remember thinking about this earlier when seeing it in a game I was playing, then just now on Niconico video.  Surprise?

Also, does anybody have a link to a 'directory' of Japanese emotion/sounds?  I've seen others that have confused me as well!

They're called kaomoji (顔文字) in Japan, you may have better luck with a search on that.

Confusion/surprise.  My students said it to me whenever I said something unexpected.  Which was, ya know, a LOT.  tongue

Amazingu Jan 12, 2008

@jb: this is not kaomoji, it's just an exclamation of surprise, like Qui-Gon said, similar to English "Whaaaaaaaaat!?"

It was an answer to his second question.

nevermind!

Think I might have seen/heard that in the Japanese Star Fox 64...

Thanks, I was really curious about this.  No, I don't mean the Japanese emoticons, I meant I've seen other repeating characters, some in manga but very often in games that have thrown me off.  Another one I remember is (sorry, no Japanese IME on this computer) "Aaaaaaa" and something that really didn't make any sense to me "Tsutsutsutsutsu..."

EDIT: "My students said it to me whenever I said something unexpected."

Whoa, you teach Japanese?  Pretty cool, man!

I don't mean to be ass, but seriously man, how come you're the only one who never uses the forum-supplied quote function and always manually copies and pastes quotes?  Just curious.

Nope.  I taught English as a foreign language in Japan.  Typically in Japanese, despite it sort of half-defeating the main purpose of me being there.

I don't know how to use the Quote function other then to open a blank box (
?  I have no idea), and then I just forgot about it.  I don't post in many forums, honestly - Its really as simple as that!

Oh, OK.  Thats pretty cool though, I can imagine that I might be doing something similar in the near future.

All you have to do is click the "Quote" link at the lower-right corner of the message you want to quote and the forum software automatically quotes the entire message.  You can edit inside of the tags as you see fit.  Just remember that the block must start with {quote=Poster's Name} and end with {/quote} except that you need to use straight brackets [] where I have curved brackets {} above.  It's that simple.

I see... I can't believe I never tried that button before.  Thanks, I guess there'll be more conformity in the forums now wink
