How do I get Winamp to display the filenames of songs? I tried using %filename%, as Winamp suggests, but it doesn't work.

When I rip a CD into .ape files using Exact Audio Copy and know the tracklist, then the songs will get a filename and a 'tag' that Winamp recognizes. But sometimes I don't always know the tracklist when I'm ripping the CD. Sometimes it takes a few years for someone to provide that information and then I name the files, so I don't have to look at Track01, Track02, etc. When I name the files in a folder, Winamp does not recognize those new names. I have found that I have to update the tags, which is truly annoying because of how much longer it takes than simply naming the files. My point is that I should not have to do double the work (no one should).

This is what I want to do:

Name song files while they are in a folder (not the tags) and then have Winamp recognize and display those filenames.

Also, sometimes Winamp will suddenly supercharge the volume without warning. To solve this problem I have set the volume to 90% and lowered my main computer volume. I used to keep the computer volume high and kept Winamp at around 15-25%. Winamp should not increase the volume and I have spent considerable trying to eliminate the problem by using various programs such as Ad-Aware and Spy Doctor. They claim my computer is clean, but it can't be. There is something very sneaky going on.

Not sure about the first issue. If it's showing Track01, Track02, etc., then the files may have been automatically tagged when you ripped them. Try deleting the tags and the filenames should get displayed instead. There are also plenty of programs that will automatically tag files based on the filename. I use The GodFather since it's free and relatively easy to use. I'm pretty sure it supports .ape files.

As for the volume issue, I had the reverse happening to me, with Winamp constantly turning my volume down. I forget what the problem was, but I think it had something to do with one of my plugins or another media player changing my Wave control.

Here are a few threads that may help you on that:
