Plain and simple: Have you ever gotten mad at a game and broken it or rendered it unplayable?

I did twice and came close twice. The CPU in Street Fighter 3: Double Impact really pissed me off, so I opened the lid on the Dreamcast and launched it. Tore a good chunk out of the side of the disc when it hit the door. Both Invasion from Beyond and Gran Turismo 2 were the close calls, but I was able to trade Invasion back in and get GT2 back to the rental store in one piece (barely).

And the other "unplayable" is the inspiration for this thread: I just realized I actually threw my copy of Guitar Hero III away last week. I got pissed off at Welcome to the Jungle on expert, took out the disc, tucked it in the case, then I threw it behind my chair and it apparently bounced into the garbage can, because it wasn't there when I went to look for it earlier today. And I took the trash out a few days ago. f---! Now not only can I not play the five or so songs I liked on it, I can't even sell the damn thing...Hope I never have to practice for a tournament.

So if you walk past a junkyard and you see a gang of anthromorphic cats playing GH3, you'll know where they got it...It'll be fun having to explain to my cousins why I don't have GH3 at the house anymore...

I've never broken a game but I have a classic regardless:

At my friends house, one of my friends was playing a game on the N64 and got so pissed at it they took the cart out and spiked it on the ground. Unfortunately, they spiked it right on the back of the case for the recently released Star Ocean 2. The impact was so great when the plastic broke it put a HUGE scratch right into the second disc - wasted. It sucked because my friends had no choice but to buy the game again as we all had our own gameplay file.

I've never done this but there have been times I've been tempted and other times I've squeezed controllers almost hard enough to break them. Luckily, I have girly hands so can't do much damage.

Nekobo Feb 19, 2008

I usually pound on my couch when I'm afflicted with gamer rage. There are times, though, where I wanted to throw a game away for being crappy...but that's a whole another story.

Ryu Feb 19, 2008

Klonoa on GBA led to a broken GBA.  I believe that is the only portable system, actually the only system ever, that I've broken.

I've broken a few controllers as well over the course of some twenty-odd years of gaming---such as when I had my last interest in Guilty Gear die at the final defeat of Justice( or whoever that last boss was).  My PS3 controller would, on occasion, randomly cease functioning (more than six times over the course of 24 hours), causing my race in Burnout Paradise to come to an unfair end; I dropped it on the floor and stomped it, cracking the shell and making it unusable---that is the most recent example.  Before that, Super Mario Galaxy pissed me off and I just threw the damn controller and nunchuk.  Luckily, Nintendo's shit is durable.

I'm surprised I've not done anything drastic to any of the Guitar Hero/Rock Band instruments... and it is best that I don't.

Never have I destroyed a game.

Yeah, I'm not too sure giving people real drumsticks is a good idea for Rock Band. I can see myself putting a hole in one of those pads a little TOO easily (or worse). The pedal is known for snapping, though.

Crash Feb 19, 2008

I punched a hole in my wall during a game of Blades of Steel.  I was up by three goals with under four minutes to play in the game.

Then, the computer scored a goal.  No problem, still up by two.

Then, it scored another goal.  On a pretty weak shot.  I was miffed at that.

Then, it scored again.  I was in shock that the computer had managed to tie the game.

Then, it scored one more time.  That was it.  I was furious.  I slammed the controller down, and punched a hole in the wall.  If you've seen the Office episode where Andy punches a hole in the wall - it was kind of like that.

Anyway, I kept playing, tied the score, and eventually won.  But the damage had been done.

I've never destroyed a game, though.

Zane Feb 19, 2008

One time I was playing Megaman X5 (first mistake) and I got so pissed off at one point that I pushed pushed my Playstation off the table (big old gray one) which flew into my acoustic guitar and made a big dent in it. X5 went flying and somehow got a scratch so deep that it couldn't be read again. I still have that guitar and play it often. The hole doesn't bother me at all; it makes it unique.

I have smashed about a dozen controllers or so. One time I destroyed a Dual Shock so bad that it took me literally weeks to find all the pieces - I swung it around like a lasso and then launched the controller into a metal edge of a heavy wooden table. When I say it exploded, I mean it exploded. I would be cleaning my room and a stray R1 button would catch my eye from under the couch a week later. The game in question: Castlevania Chronicles, Original Mode.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out used to piss me off real bad back in the day.  I never broke anything but I do remember throwing my NES controller at the TV stand, wall, floor, etc.  Nothing hurts more than when you think you might finally take down Tyson and he knocks you down for the count AND THEN he smiles and winks at you.  Makes me a little mad just thinking about it, heh.  I did eventually beat him though and I think to this day it's still my greatest video game accomplishment.

On a more recent note since that seems like forever ago, Ouendan and Elite Beat Agents on the DS definitely pissed me off many a time.  Trying to get through RSG and JJF on the harder modes really tried my patience.  The poor DS was definitely slammed down on my bed HARD and I think once I got so pissed I closed it really hard and chucked it on the floor in disgust.  I'll tell you what though, it sure does feel awesome beating something like that after so much frustration.  I believe I stood up and cheered after clearing both songs.

.... You fellas are scaring me with your violent tales.  Scared, and maybe a bit turned on..... Oh, the unbridled rage~!

Don't think I've ever broken anything myself, though a few games in recent memory have gotten me awfully angry.  The two top offenders are Contra 4's Challenge Mode and Rhythm Tengoku's Perfect Campaigns.  Both demanded a level of perfection in several spots that broke down even MY fair-leveled tolerance; I was induced to hurl DS and GB Micro respectively many a times.

Ooh, right, and there was that one isolated incident with Super Mario Galaxy.  It was one of the 'find Luigi' missions - Battlerock Galaxy, if I'm not mistaken.  I had gone through the entire level, busted open the cage where he was trapped with the Bullet Bill, and the green power star flies out.  I head over to where the power star lands, and try desperately to jump to collect it.  (It was one of those odd places where the gravity turned you upside-down, so it was hard to gauge exactly where to jump to touch it.)  So, I run around the planetoid just a little bit to get a better angle.  Once I see it, I successfully jump to collect....... and then I realize that I had collected the power star I had ALREADY earned before.  Angry at the thought of having to do the level again, I threw up my hands in frustration, the Wiimote slipping from my grip.  Luckily, I had the wrist-strap on at the time (one of the few times I actually put it on), and instead of hurtling to the ground, it instead swung around and knocked me upside the head.  Lucky for me (and the Wiimote), I had one of those rubberized slip-on cases around the controller, thereby softening the blow to both noggin and device.  But seriously, it always irked me that you'd go through a particularly difficult level in Galaxy, get to the power star, and then the power star practically flies off to some absurdly dangerous area before you can actually collect it.

How'd you fair with Ouendan 2's SSAY? ;)

Cool thread wink

It's funny, I can become immensely frustrated at games, but I never ever EVER take it out on the game or console, my sense of preservation as a collector is too strong for that. So I'll just take it out on whatever's around me. Whenever I do fling away the game or the portable console I make ABSOLUTELY sure it lands softly somewhere (I'm very calculating in my anger)

I don't remember what drove me to do these things but I have

- Ripped a Teddybear's Head clean off
- Snapped a remote control in two (well, bent it so much that it wouldn't work anymore at least)
- imprinted toothmarks on several controllers (the DC controller is REALLY hard to bite, by the way) AND my DS (the only time I actually hurt the console directly. This was because of New Super Mario Bros).

On one occasion me and some friends flung a Rival Turf SNES cartridge out of a 6th floor window (with force) to find it cracked open on the rocky pavement.
We forced the cartridge in one piece again, put it in the SNES and it worked absolutely PERFECTLY, reinforcing not only our belief that SNES cartridges are the sturdiest objects in existence, but also that Rival Turf was made by Satan.

One of the guys who was there told us how, when he was young, he got SO pissed off at Super Street Figher II (something I can relate to VERY much) he actually took the cartridge out into his backyard, grabbed a sledgehammer from the toolshed and mashed the thing to tiny bits. We kinda started avoiding him after hearing that wink

Here's an idea. Why don't you and I go out and grab a drink and I'll tell you all about the time I chucked my DS across the room because of Chapter 6 in Trauma Center.

Reminds me of the time my younger brother was playing the SNES version of Tecmo Super Bowl, I believe. After this one bad play, the controller went flying...right into the cartridge. Popped it open a bit. WHILE IT WAS STILL IN THE SNES!!!

I don't think it stopped playing, either. smile

Thankfully, it was ONLY popped open and not broken, and we were able to snap it together. Good thing, because it was a rental. tongue

The only thing I can think of under that heading would be the time I lost a near-completed file on Alundra due to a memory-card glitch. My response was to uh, bite the memory-card.

But other than that I simply pound my thigh and swear like a rational person.

Idolores Feb 19, 2008 (edited Feb 19, 2008)

Elite Beat Agents pissed me off royally on several occasions, but that's it.

Oh, and a couple years back, Diablo 2 wouldn't install properly (over several thousand tries), so I got super mad and utterly demolished my computer.

longhairmike Feb 19, 2008

i was ready to destroy my little brother's face cause he would always toy with me on Street Fighter 2. He knew every character's every move and every counter that could block any attack. He'd give me full handicap and say "okay, im gonna let you hit me" and then he combos my ass to KO when i tried to make a move.

Hm, I dunno.....  Amazingu's teddy bear head-ripping escapade pretty much takes the cake.  You'd need to top that.

I'll still slide you in, though -- only because I've got quite a few Trauma Center venting stories to share myself.

OMFG! I thought I was the only one that did this! My PS1 and PS2 controllers all have bite marks - guess the taste of plastic calms me down tongue

Thought of another one, this time by myself. Does anyone remember Soul Blade's Edge Master Mode? Oh lord, I got so sick of the announcer saying "you lose" I chucked the remote across the room and it hit the railing on the stairs and broke apart: the back, front, circut board and batteries went flying in all different directions. I then went into a frenzy to put it back together because it was the downstairs remote and I didn't want my parents to know what I did - no one was home at the time.

XISMZERO Feb 19, 2008

When I was maybe 10 or 11 I flung my rental copy of Street Fighter II for SNES after losing to Dhalsim. My mom was pissed especially when I had to somehow explain how it happened to the guy at the counter, withholding the truth of course.

I also once spat into my copy of Rescue Rangers and if I didn't know better, there's still vestige of saliva in there. I think the game is easy now, but when I was a kid, it was frustrating as hell.

I have broken controllers, but usually control myself nowadays. I recall a time I attempted to beat the snow level in Syphon Filter, failed, tossed my red PSX controller to the ground.

Rhomer's (sp?) base, the one with the gas tanks and the alarm?

I believe we're talking about the same level. There's an interior level after it but that wasn't nearly as bad. The outdoor level gave you the option of stealth or all out gunning -- and you'd better stick to keeping quiet it or else you're a dead man. It took me a while to beat that one but so did the Expo center the first time.

You can only imagine how much fun SF2 turned out to be when at least 80% of the game's enemies had Flak jackets and levels were stealth/no guns only.

Like Amazingu, the inner obsessive collector in me prevents me from damaging games. I have been known to squeeze controllers and press down hard on buttons, however. That, and I curse like a sailor.

My brother did almost snap my Jak II disc in half. I wouldn't have blamed him if he completed the task, either. Jak II was really when I learned to differentiate a "hard" game from a "frustrating, poorly designed piece of crap" game. It seemed as if every timed challenge was designed to give you the bare minimum time. The lack of checkpoints or easy restarts didn't help. By the time I reached the drill platform on hard mode (WTF did this game need a hard mode?), I was ready to start a bonfire.

My friend did the same exact thing in Mortal Kombat 3! He'd give me an opening, then unleash one of Smoke's cheap dial-a-combos on me. Actually, he would keep using the same combo over and over, which made it all the worse.

XLord007 Feb 19, 2008

I've never destroyed a game or piece of game hardware.  I have furiously screamed curses at the TV on many occasions, and I have nearly worn my wrist off trying to beat certain Ouendan stages, but that's about it.  Once, I was so angry with the original Zelda that I simply erased my save file, packed up the NES and all of its games, and immediately returned it to the friend I was borrowing it from.

That sounds like my usual MO also. ^_~ I got so frustrated with just trying to REACH the last castle in Dragon Warrior II, going slowwwwwly around that damn mountain range and hitting so many random battles that I kept using up all my healing items, that I immediately packed up my entire DW1-4 mint set and sold them off. Now I wish I'd played at least DQ4, heh.

We've never broken games, but my bro's thrown and broken quite a few controllers, has hit lots of glass and wood, and finally managed to bust an analog-stick-sized hole in our ceiling not too long ago. That last one *I'm* actually rather impressed with. Me, I've probably killed a few sensitivity spots on my DS screen after getting frustrated with Phantom Hourglass and whammed the stylus a little too strongly against the screen. I usually punch the floor or cushions when I get really ticked off.

I'm getting really f---ing close with Tokyo Extreme Racer: Drift 2. Whoever designed this game should be raped by bears while being force fed his own genitals. T_T

I could never think about destroying a game.  Crazy!  Its a totally foreign thought to me honestly, I've felt bad manhandling my games, much less outright destroying them.  I have a friend who isn't of that mindset, and when we'd sit down to play a fighting game and I'd win, he'd get so aggrivated he'd throw the controller.  Enough to make me wince, maybe my subconcious let me keep my pace down so he could win wink
