Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

Ashley Winchester Feb 20, 2008 (edited Feb 20, 2008)

I thought it be fun to see how many soundtracks we can name that are almost complete but are missing 1 or 2 tracks that aren't extremely apparent or contain oddities and/or things that are just weird. Here are mine:

Demon Castle Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight
- the librarian's theme is missing, not that it's that big of deal

SaGa Frontier OST
- the hidden track: Theme of Coon
- the omission of theme for Captain Hamilton's Victoria
- track 3-15 "Destiny (Ending -Blue-)" I've never heard this in game, have you?

Wild Arms 2nd Ignition
- ex file music is missing, it's not that great of a track though

Wild Arms Advanced 3rd
- why in the hell isn't "Wild Bunch" split up into multiple tracks! I want a separate track for the piece when you're fighting on top of the train!

Legend of Legaia
- this doesn't have to deal so much with the soundtrack as much as the music files on the game disc itself: why does Michiko Naruke's "Critical Hit" appear on here when there's no way to hear it in game?

Rockman X4
- would have been cool to have the Japanese and English pre-battle taunts on the soundtrack... some where so bad they were funny.

Agreed on that count.

Also, the OST for the second ZOE game was missing at least one track from the game, where you're navigating Jehuty through the damn minefield. Kind of a placid, track totally unlike anything else actually on the disc. Rather liked it. On the other hand, the OST did have a beefed up version of the Zakat theme (I maintain that it is still a totally bad-ass boss theme) that wasn't present in the game.

And apparently, the Kameo OST US release is missing at least half a disc's worth of material. This thread all for details.

http://altpop.com/stc/forums-new/viewtopic.php?id=3262 I still posit that it's stupid to release an OST if it is an incomplete release. At least for someone as OCD as myself.

Despite containing all of the Breath of Fire soundtracks, Breath of Fire Original Soundtrack Special Box is still missing tracks on the Breath of Fire III set.  I can look past the omissions of the variations of Intermission and Victory Song.  But the one track that's really missed is the piece that plays during adult Ryu's dream sequence (near the end of the game, just before the Dragon Lord fight).  I'm not sure if it ever had a title; it wasn't in the game's sound test, either.  neutral

Both of the World of Warcraft soundtracks are incomplete.  The first one is missing two great, ambient pieces that play during nighttime only in Tanaris, Azshara, and Darkshore, among others.  The second soundtrack is missing all of the tracks that were composed by Matt Uelmen (mainly heard in Terokkar Forest and Blade's Edge Mountains).  Those were some of the best, and I was disappointed when I didn't hear them on the soundtrack.

And of course, there's Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight, which doesn't have the library or the PlayStation disc remix tracks on it.  There are also a couple weird edits on Our Festival and Strange Bloodlines.

Eirikr Feb 20, 2008

f---ing Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne. It's mostly missing some variations on character themes, but more blatantly it doesn't have awesome ambient stuff like the Amala Temple. I could listen to that track for hours. I would kill for even a rip of it.

XLord007 Feb 20, 2008

There are so many that could be listed here (I'm sure Skylark alone could fill pages about missing Square tracks), so I'm just going to focus on the one that pissed me off the most: F-Zero AX/GX.  I wanted that "He's a hero/F-Zero!" cheese rock track so badly and was denied.

Zane Feb 20, 2008

God Hand - the GOD TRACKS CD is missing at least 15 songs from the game, not including the little chiptune melodies and jingles.

Yeah ... the ending for Blue isn't exactly an ending, is it? Just fade to gray, the end.

Is it possible that this music played after the Blue/Rouge fight when the credits scroll quickly? I haven't played the game in like, 10 years, so I can't remember.

Stella Deus has all tracks but a title screen theme. Ironically, that was my personal favorite track on the soundtrack.

Besides them, Saga Frontier has a couple of unused tracks (i.g. 1-05 Standard Yorkland Song, 1-09 Theme of Asellus) and lacks several tracks which we can hear only in the game rip or the sound-test.

Interestingly enough, this one is in MIDI in the game -- the rest of the music is streamed. I always wondered if that was somehow related to its not being on the OST.

One I've always lamented was in Grandia, the track in the Mermaid Island at the end of disc 1.  And of course, someone even recently posted a PSF collection...and it's not there.
There's a couple other tracks not on the OSTs either just nothing that stood out like that.

That makes sense, I don't recall hearing it when I screwed around with the stream data on the disc eons ago. Now I'm kind of tempted to rip the terrible yet great voice acting and reorder/edit them to create some new abominations.

Warpstar Feb 21, 2008

Star Ocean Soundtrack - A somewhat odd release in general. Wasn't released until several years after the game, and was mostly a remaster rather than the actual original soundtrack (aside from the handful of selected SFC originals at the end).
Aside from that, it included were a bunch of tracks that weren't even in the game (from what I remember), while a few that actually were didn't make the cut. A couple of jingles, the little tracks used by the "Musician" ability, and, oddest of all, the staff roll theme "Mother Ocean". That last omission looks to have been remedied in the new The First Departure release, though.
(Another oddity was that "Departures" didn't get a remaster, but was included in the SFC Original Tracks group on disc 2.)

Kirby 64 Original Soundtrack - A bunch of stuff was missing from this one. The "Stage Select" themes, a few stage themes, the Miracle Matter Battle theme, and the Dark Star theme were all left off.

Donkey Kong Country 2.

When I first got the album through Nintendo Power, I skipped through all the tracks to find my favorite song at the time, which played in the mineshaft levels (Kannon's Klaim, etc.).  Much to my displeasure, it was nowhere to be found!  A travesty!

A few years later, on my first trip to Japan, I picked up the Japanese version of the soundtrack in Akihabara, just *hoping* that it would contain Kannon's Klaim - and once again, nothing!  "What a waste!" I thought.

... Of course, now I'm sitting on two different copies of a super-rare soundtrack, so at least I can find solace in that.

The Nintendo Power's release of DKC2 is super rare?  I ordered that for the same reasons you did.  Where is the mineshaft track?!

I didn't know Breath of Fire III was missing so many tracks.  I've found at least two CD's worth of tracks that are missing.  Was it me, or was that game really hard to get into?

Not just you. I tried playing it a few times, but I just couldn't really dig in. And this was before I burned myself out with RPGs.

You two serious? I absolutely loved that game. Character designs drew me in like nothing before, and I totally dug the music like crazy. smile

Suikoden V  OST - massive, four discs, and missing one of the best tracks in the game, "Return to Stormfist" even available in the sound test.

Bernhardt Feb 22, 2008

Legend of Dragoon
Thousand Arms

Both soundtracks were missing about half of their material...the GOOD halves.

Ashley Winchester Feb 22, 2008 (edited Feb 22, 2008)

I forgot about this one, wouldn't it have been nice if the awesome medley that replaced vocal piece in the ending video in Wild Arms outside Japan was on Complete Tracks?

Edit:

I played the game a little less than a year ago; don't think anything plays when the credits are scrolling after the Blue/Rouge fight except the howling of the wind.

Actually there is more to Blue's story and everyone elses; they're only revealed in a book though as the game was rushed to release. Funny, SE never seems to have a problem delaying big name projects.

Yeah, even Capcom did that with their Rockman soundtracks.

There's a LOT revealed in there from what I've read.

When I first played Blue's game, I thought my game froze when I won (I had a fickle PSX, Grandia for instance froze once causing me to lose 45 minutes)...it wasn't until the THIRD time I realized it was supposed to do that.

I've said it before -- it's both the best and worst ending ever.

(Super Mario World 2) Yoshi's Island

Missing more than half the soundtrack. Never did find a good rip of it.

Megavolt Feb 23, 2008

The Genso Suikoden II soundtrack was missing Battlefield Without Light.  It's one of the most standout tracks of the score (if not THE most standout track, as it was for me), and I know it was the first one that I looked for when I acquired both volumes of the soundtrack, so imagine my surprise at discovering that it was missing.  Talk about a strange oversight.  It shows up on the Suikogaiden albums, but it was still a lame omission.

And yes, it's disappointing that Kannon's Klaim didn't appear on either DKC2 soundtrack.  It's an awesome track in a score chalk full of awesome tracks.  Considering how often I listened to it on the sound test, the no show on the albums is inexcusable.

Also, the one official release of Noriyuki Asakura's Tenchu soundtrack is missing some tracks from the game (one of them being the track that plays when you face Onikage, for example).

Mak Feb 23, 2008 (edited Feb 23, 2008)

Zelda the Music
It has the only soundtrack release of Four Sword Adventures music, but its only a few of the tracks. They missed the opportunity to release a complete collection of Zelda music, and instead only put in a handful from each game.

This CD and Famicom Anniversary Vol 2 have NES versions of Zelda 2's music, but not the NES boss theme that's less repititive, and no soundtrack has the NES' version of the Legend of Zelda title music that sounds different than the FDS release.

Super Mario Sound Collection
This has most of the music from Super Mario Sunshine, but its missing stuff like the demo theme, and underground theme.

The Lament of Innocence Sampler CD luckily fixes a few of the tracks from the SoTN CD, and Dracula's Castle loops once.

I had the exact same reaction. Interesting thing about Suiko II was that the soundtrack seems to have a battle theme not in the game...but the game had a few of those mega-battles with NO music, where that's probably supposed to go (anyone know if this was only in the US? WOuldn't be surprised if it was another weird programming error...)

Bernhardt Feb 25, 2008 (edited Feb 25, 2008)

I often pitch cinema scene music, but when it comes to

Drakengard / Drag-On Dragoon

They could've at least stuck the opening FMV music in there, because it's the music to one of the first scenes you see in the game, so of course you're going to want the music for it, because both the music and imagery are actually MEMORABLE.

Drakengard 2 / Drag-On Dragoon 2

There's a lot of missing music from this one, mostly from cinema scene and non-gameplay scenes; doesn't bother me too much...yet, but then again, I haven't come across anything good that was omitted on the soundtrack yet.

Sidenotes:

"Vein of Grief" (09) rocks my socks; memorable melody, good use of rhythm, percussion, chorus, and the little chirping bits were a nice touch, too.

There are also a number of pieces which have some sort of inhuman, mechanical sounds that make them AWEXOME.

the game was infested with bugs in the west. the skipping music was just another error.

Most of the bugs in the American version (screwed up prequel hero's name, silence when there should be music/singing, among others) was fixed in the European PAL versions.

I'm not sure if any these existed in the Japanese version.

rein Feb 27, 2008 (edited Feb 27, 2008)

Neither of the two Metal Gear Solid 2 soundtracks has the title screen music.

The Command & Conquer soundtrack omits the music that plays when mission results are tallied.

The large-scale battle theme from Suikoden II wasn't included in either volume of the Suikoden II soundtrack, although it was included in the soundtrack for Suikogaiden Volume 1.  Incidentally, if you've always wanted to experience Suikoden II without the bother of actually playing it, you're in luck:

Edit: I see that the Suikoden II omission has already been mentioned.

I originally loved Breath of Fire III and IV in 1998 and 2000 but I find them extremely dry now... I played IV last year and I could only chip away at it here and there occasionally until I beat. I didn't even bother with III afterward even though I had it on hand. Don't get me wrong, they are good games but I think the criticism they receive is well founded in a certain sense. And BOFIII's mini games are terrible; or rather I'm terrible at them.

Musically, those games are hit and miss depending on who's listening. BOFIII loses some points because there is this feeling the composers where working a little two hard making tracks fit the events they played in, thus sacrificing some continuity as a result. BOFIV is better in this area but both are just weird in my opinion - I like them but then I don't like them.

I think BOFII is my favorite, the hard rock battle themes rock are great and the game is shorter to a point.

Finally found this topic after seaching for it for eons.

Anyway, I though up a new one regarding the FFVII soundtrack.

Is it just me, or would it have been nice to have a short loop of "Those Chosen by the Planet" on the soundtrack that played like it was played in the ShinRa Mansion? Guess it's a minor compliant but it's something I've thought about recently.

That more up tempo version of it I have; I should have been more clear to specify the slower version (which is what I was meaning by ambient) that plays when you first enter those three areas in the Amala temple. The search continues!

Thanks anyway though, I appreciate it!

Fellow Meguro & Megaten fan to the rescue!

My episodic memory is really bad, so I don't remember which track played at that moment, but here are few tracks related to Amala.

The official release also lacks the different versions of Normal Battle.
