I've had some strange ideas over the years and I apologize for exposing them to you, but I have finally come up with something I think I can sell. I got the idea from internet dating sites. On those sites, you have a picture and some information. The reason why those sites are so useful is because you can find the type of person you want very quickly. Of course, I'm not satisfied with what already exists. The story I thought of has nothing to do with dating, but has a lot to do with finding the person you want quickly, without using the internet. It'll be a while before I know if it's sold or not. I have a lot of work to do.

I don't know which would creep me out more: this post in its current form, or this post + more details of what you're planning.

I just can't wait till they have a website where I can place a custom built-to-order girl.

Will you get a patent?

Don't hurt no-one, man.

Or a patent on a novel method of getting arrested?

BlindMonk Feb 29, 2008

I'd buy that for a dollar.

Nemo Mar 1, 2008

If you get arrested or killed, make sure you youtube it.

Internet dating sites really aren't that effective.  The problem with them is that they give you way too much choice, so you waste all of this time trying to find someone who is absolutely perfect for you (no such person actually exists), and pass on the people who would be a good fit thinking that in the midst of all those people, there's always someone better you haven't found yet.  Studies have shown that speed-dating where you pay to play is more effective because you have limited choices and you want to recoup your investment, so you give people chances you wouldn't otherwise have if your choices were less limited.

Wow. Such strange responses. smile

It's just a fiction story and has nothing to do with dating. I merely got the idea from the way it is possible to find people quickly online. I asked - what if you could do the same thing offline?

For example (this will not be in the story):

A woman walks into a bar and wants to find a compatible male. Normally, she would have to talk to the men and find out their interests, income, job, etc. That activity takes considerable time. My idea is that it would be more efficient for her to check her cellphone or the equivalent of such a device and review her matches. How so? The men will have transmitters installed on them and the software on her phone equivalent will look for keywords.

Everyone I've talked to is fascinated by the idea and some have offered interesting twists to that scenario that never occurred to me. One guy told me he could probably write software for the iPhone to make this really happen, assuming men agreed to have transmitters installed.

"Income" and "job" are rather superficial ways to judge someone you've never met aren't they? I think I'd be more concerned about someon liking what they did rather than if they made a mint doing it.

A guy at work keeps talking to me about the new Terminator TV show. I have not seen any episodes, so I can't comment. But he said the actress playing the Terminator is so hot, he would have sex with her, even if she were a terminator for real. I then asked, "What if she closed her vagina while you were inside?"

His excited attitude was suddenly replaced with a look of dread. One of the female co-workers heard me and she couldn't stop laughing.

I've thought about the same thing myself. You don't need special transmitters; the men could use their cell phones to upload their positions and information to a server from which the women could download the information for men in close proximity (or, with slightly smarter software, in the same establishment).

I doubt this would work in practice, though. First, women rarely approach men. It's almost always the other way around. I guess women might try to indicate to men in whom they're interested that they want to be approached, but I'm not sure how well that would work. And it wouldn't work in reverse, partly because most women wouldn't want to give men that much information, and partly because we can find out 90% of what we want to know just by looking.

Might make for a good story, though.

That's why the idea is to give women information about men, and not the other way around.

Reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Homer is tasked to find Selma a guy...

There's a film called "Shortbus" where this software is already being used ... like on a Blackberry or PDA or w/e. The film came out in 2006 ... it's got lots of graphic, real-life sex. But the plot point with the matchmaking software is used in the middle of this pansexual bazaar that is THE SHORTBUS.

Also, I'm reminded of the thing in GATTACA where women would pick up hair follicles of potential mates and have them checked out.

Whatever you choose to do, Mr. Kast, good luck. Sometimes, all it takes is one idea like this to make a big name. smile
