So I'm finally getting around to checking out some actual PS3 games, rather than watching Blu-ray flicks all the time.  Among them is COD4, which has been the best of the bunch so far.  With good reason; it is freaken AWESOME.  I've never been one for first-person shooters, but after having experienced Modern Warfare, I'm considering re-evaluating my stance on them.

I'm about a third through the single-player campaign on Normal, and loving every second of it.  It's an experience; a never-ending surge of pure, high-powered adrenaline action, the likes of which I haven't felt in quite a while.  Chalk that up to the extinction of the arcade scene, and the generally casual gaming mentality of Nintendo systems.  This badboy's a lean, mean intense-shootin' machine -- which happens to look and sound incredible to boot.  (All FPS titles run at 60 fps like this, right?)  The AI on both sides of the fence is pretty hardcore.  The bullet penetration dynamic is awesome.  Those attack dogs are damning.  Gregson-Williams' score is superb.

Was thinking of checking out Call of Duty 3 after finishing up with 4; is it anywhere as good as COD4?  I know that PerfectZero and Ryu mentioned it somewhere here, but it's true that Infinity Ward didn't develop part three, correct?

Can't wait to try out the much-lauded online mode.  Any takers here? :)

Cedille Mar 15, 2008

I enjoy CoD4, but I'm much prefer WW2 settings (if worn-out) over fictional modern ones since the latter also tends to parrot banal movies. I know I’m just one of the few, and many people have grown fed up of the anti-Axis war.

Yeah, 3 (and likely 5 will be) was developed by another team, and I hear the PS3 port was pretty bad;  Xbox360 was 630p/60fps, but PS3 was 630p/30fps.

Wanderer Mar 15, 2008

CoD4 is terrific. I rented it on the 360 and had a great time. There were more than a few occasions where my jaw just dropped (and if you're just a third through, you haven't encountered the really good ones yet). Most people laud the online play but I'm not a fan of playing on the internet (hence why I have just a Silver Live account). Too many loudmouthed teenagers. The single play was more than enough for me.

CoD2 is also really good. After beating it, I had the misfortune of playing Medal of Honor: Airborne and I was so bored that I turned it off mid-mission. Giacchino's wonderful score was a perk but not enough for me to force myself through.

Haven't played CoD3 yet but it's next.

Ryu Mar 15, 2008

I've played 2-4 and 3 was the worst.  It attempts the spirit of what Infinity Ward did in 2, and since 2 isn't on the PS3, by all means, rent it and give it a shot.

Kenology Mar 15, 2008

Playing COD4 online is a real bitch considering everyone's leveled up which means they can shoot through walls and call air strikes on your ass.  I didn't get one kill... not ONE... until my 5th game.

XLord007 Mar 16, 2008

I recently played COD4 on the 360 with some friends and had a blast.  That said, it's only fun if the people you're playing with are as inexperienced as you.  We tried playing online and that was pretty pointless since everyone else was so much better than we were.

brandonk Mar 17, 2008

Angela - what's your PS3 tag??

I'm on as brandonpfn.  Would love to play some of you STC peeps, so look me up

COD 4, is EXCELLENT.  Great on both systems  You will love online play, once you get the hang of it, it's not that bad at all.  Newbies can get in on the action pretty quickly, due to some really well thought out play mechanics.  True you get better weapons as you progress, but you don't necessarily need them to stand on your own.  The game play really redefines FPS, altogether.

3 was horrible...especially for the PS3 (no offline multiplayer...why?!)

BAMAToNE Mar 17, 2008 (edited Mar 17, 2008)

I don't understand why my roommate and I can't both play online multiplayer at the same time. We can fight against each other in a 1 vs. 1 type thing, but not online? Am I missing something?

Edit: That's too bad, Wanderer. I'm really enjoying Medal of Honor: Airborne and was debating starting a thread about it here.

It's probably just me. Most reviews say it's a "good" but not "great" game and I can see where they're coming from... but coming off of CoD4, everything about the game felt stale to me.

BAMAToNE Mar 17, 2008

I prefer the WWII style games anyway, I guess. I find it a little hard sometimes, too. Every once in a while I'm not sure what exactly I'm supposed to do, and they don't do a good job spelling it out for me. Plus I hate it when I parachute into a building full of Germans looking for a "skill drop." Oops.

To tell the truth, I don't have one yet, since the PS3 I'm currently using isn't really mine.  (Really should've thought about that before I posed the "any takers" question.  *_*)  I'll have my own system in just a few weeks, though, so I'll get back to you then. Hopefully, I'll be proficient enough at the game to take it online.  :)

Gosh, you're telling me.  I don't think anything can get cooler than the "All Ghillied Up" and "One Shot, One Kill' missions.  Man, that scenario was BRILLIANT.

Those are great missions, definitely. The BIGGEST shock I'm referring to is at the end of "Shock and Awe" where I was like WTF? However, this is one of those games that saves the best for last. You are in for a treat. big_smile

PerfectZer0 Mar 19, 2008 (edited Mar 19, 2008)

All I have to say about Call of Duty 4 is that it's wicked.  Fun and action packed like Angela previously stated, yeah it rocks.  And beating every mission on Verteran proves you to be a dedicated soldier.  Now I for one haven't beaten every mission yet on Veteran, I only have 3 more to go....it's tough, One Shot, One Kill mission has been so far the hardest one, though I did find a trick to beating it.  Not much skill at all involed but it worked!

Then all this talk about Call of Duty 2, man the cool thing about this game is that is has and will continue to age very very well.  Great game, awesome to just to pick up and play online.  Very memorable multiplayer maps, great layout and design.  Single player is still badass...one of the few 360 games I got that I have a 1000/1000 gamerscore on.

Call of Duty 3 sucks.  It's bad.  Sloppy.  Doesn't feel, sound, look like a CoD game.  CoD3<----Coaster award.

Ryu Mar 19, 2008

^ She doesn't have a 360 though, so CoD3 is the only way she can get a taste of the Call of Duty WWII experience (on PS3).

Man, the 360 is awesome.

Yeah, I seriously couldn't believe that happened in Shock and Awe.  The level certainly lives up to its name, doesn't it? o_O

Regrettably, I don't own a 360.  Not yet, anyway.  I'm warming up to the idea of getting one, especially after playing the likes of COD4, and getting the FPS bug.  Bioshock and Gears of War really do look awesome.

Your sense is wrong.

Wanderer Mar 19, 2008

The 360 has some pretty good stuff on it. I don't recommend any of the JRPGs (keeping in mind I haven't played Lost Odyssey yet) but a lot of the shooters are quite good and there's plenty of other games too (I'm currently playing through DMC 4 and having a blast).

I never warmed up to Gears of War single player but the game is a LOT of fun if you play it with a friend. Bioshock scared me so much that I couldn't get further than an hour into it. Take that as an endorsement if you're a fan of the survival horror genre (which Bioshock reminds me a lot of).

Was Blue Dragon any good?    Lost Odyssey looked cool.  I'd get a 360 if I had more time to play games...I'd get a Mac if I had more money...I'd get a piano if I knew how to play...

Wanderer Mar 20, 2008

Depends what you're looking for. The story and characters are some of the lamest to come out of the genre but the battle system is fun and the game certainly *looks* great. I'm continuing to play it because I don't have anything else to play at the moment. It's not what I'd call an inspired JRPG. wink

Nearing the end of the single-player campaign, but I did give my first go at online last night.  You guys weren't kidding; four matches later, I earned a grand total of two kills..... against my kicking the bucket like thirty-four times.  o_O  Geez, everyone is either greatly overpowered or greatly skilled.  Those air strikes sure don't help matters, and what the hell with the snipers?  Is there anyway to track those guys?

I did level up to Demolition, though. ;p  Now here's my question; I noticed you start out with a measly three bullet burst-shot on all your automatics.  Does this upgrade as your skill level goes up?  I could swear I see players just letting loose on their guns - the higher leveled players, of course.

EDIT: Ah, never mind.  It just seems to be a trait of that specific class of weaponry.

Angela Apr 12, 2008 (edited Apr 15, 2008)

Now that I've gotten the hang of multiplayer, I've become hopelessly addicted to online gameplay.  Although I like to jump in on Team Death Matches every once in a while, I tend to stick with Free For All - I just love the "every man for himself" mentality there.

The level-up system is incredibly gratifying.  I'm now up to Level 15, and I'm digging the Perks I have so far.  I've earned the "Red Dot Sight" attachment for my trusty MP5 sub-machine gun, which has been an invaluable crutch for nailing more accurate shots.  I thought I might like the "Last Stand" Perk, but I think "Extreme Conditioning" is far more useful to have, especially when attempting the sneak-up and slash technique.  I once picked up an enemy's souped-up P90 and instantly fell in love with it.  Can't wait to unlock that badboy of a weapon.

Just a heads-up for the PS3 COD4 fans here; the Variety Map Pack is hitting both North America and Europe's PSN store today.  Gonna grab it later tonight, since I'm already itching for some new maps to play on.  Double XP this weekend, too!

http://kotaku.com/382392/call-of-duty-4 … 3-thursday

You 360 folks played the new maps yet?  Any opinions?  Creek and Chinatown look particularly awesome.

Thanks for the heads up.  I played them earlier this month at my Brother's...let's see how bogged down the PSN gets..the 360 d/l experience kept crashing. (Not a fan of Xbox, and this tid bit didn't help, but I'll concede there are many more Xbox people out there)

The maps are GREAT from what I played, but I only had a couple of hours with them.  Looking fwd for sure

p.s. When are we all playing?  'Let's do this!'

Herrkotowski Apr 24, 2008 (edited Apr 24, 2008)

Hey Angela,

I emailed you about adding you to my PSN friends list.

I'm looking forward to the map pack. I probably won't get to play it too much tonight, but I'll be playing a bunch tomorrow! I think Chinatown looks the most appealing. Second would be the TV station based stage (can't remember the name). It just seems like it'll be hectic.

Right, I'll be sure to check you out.  Brandon, I've got you added, of course -- we just need to synchronize ourselves for matches.  I'll definitely be online for the weekend..... unless MGO finally gets up and running. ;)

Anyway, I've got the map pack downloaded.  It's a 350 MB file, and so far, it looks like you can only exclusively play the new maps through the Team Death Match and Hardcore Team Death Match playlists only.  (They say they'll be integrated with the rest of the playlists by next week.)  Also, Double XP this weekend applies only to the new maps, it seems.

The TV station would be "Broadcast."  I haven't tried it yet, but its close-ended nature looks like it'll make for mayhem-driven knife fights and crazy martyrdom counts.  On the other hand, I did try out "Creek," and it's the complete opposite; that level looks like it's gonna be a haven for snipers.  o_O

XLord007 Jun 24, 2009

I've played plenty of split-screen mutliplayer COD4 on 360, but I never got to try the single-player mode until recently when Best Buy's $30 sale price gave me some motivation to pick up the PS3 version for myself.  I have to say that I'm kind of torn on the single-player.  On the one hand, the SAS characters are cool and engaging and the narrative pulls you through the game at a good pace.  On the other hand, it's way too scripted and gives the player little freedom.  There were parts where I just wanted to tell the computer to eff off and let me do my own thing rather than continually demanding that I go pick up a Javelin or something.  Still, it was fun ride while it lasted, but definitely not worth the original $60 asking price, so I'm glad I waited.

I think it's awesome the way they're bringing some of the key members of the SAS back for Modern Warfare 2.  Well, one so far, anyway; Soap MacTavish playing the role of new C.O. should make for a nice new twist on the ongoing narrative.

I'm going to want to play through the single-player campaign again before the sequel hits.  Maybe I'll tackle Veteran next.

Wow, that's just overkill. So they are actually encouraging gamers to sneak about at night? But if Ubisoft offered Sam Fisher's goggles with the new Splinter Cell, then maybe I'd be interested...

This is hilarious to me because way back when Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow was released, my buddy and I joked that we'd love to see Night Vision goggles packed into the next Splinter Cell game as a pre-order bonus. Guess I got my wish, in a sense. big_smile

So yeah, I'm there. Might be incentive enough for me to get Call of Duty 4 which everyone was busting a nut over a year ago.

With this badboy equipped, at least you'll never miss the toilet during that 3am nature call.
