Specifically, the Japanese space agency, who I'm sure is only 12 years away from colonizing the moon with Gundams.

Pony Canyon has announced that they will release 'Kaguya Tsuki Sekai Hiko' for Blu-ray in Japan on June 18th, a full month before the DVD release. This disc will feature 17 minutes of high definition footage of the Moon and Earthrise as shot by NHK and JAXA's Kaguya probe. The footage has been set to classical music, and will give viewers a never before seen look at our closest celestial neighbor.
No technical specs have been announced for the release at this time. It was originally planned for HD DVD release, but with the death of that format, those plans have been canceled.
The Japanese only release will likely carry a large import cost, but for those of you mesmerized by all things space related, this is the only change to see such footage in high definition.
HD-DVD was region-code free, but Blu-ray is not. There is a chance that this particular release is region-free, I hope. But $45 for 17 mins of hi-def space footage? Tempting, admittedly, but ridiculous. HD-recorded Blu-ray releases of space footage would be something I'd buy though, much like how I've come close to picking up the BBC's Planet Earth release to see nature in all of its 'sitting-inside-watching-it-on-beautiful-HD' glory.
