These babies are finally hitting the road! Granted, currently it's far far far far out of my price range, but plans are to make these affordable by 2012. I think it's about time these start becoming mainstream, and I'm glad a small company is behind what in my opinion should have been done years ago! What says you?

2 cents per gallon -- but that car will severly offset at that kind of price tag. I want more mainstream, accessible, afforable hybrid technology, but I'm not buying one at even a fraction of that rate.

Just gonna say that. For something economic, it sure isn't.

I just traded in my 2002 toyota echo (which got 40mpg) this past thursday for a 2006 Ford Escape. Now that i only drive 7k a year, and only fill up every 3 weeks or so, i dont need a little dinky thing. Besides, the escape i bought is stick with a 2.3 4cyl, so i still get close to 30 mpg.

If it were truly a 'tesla motor', it would derive energy from the ether, as Tesla believed existed. (One of his dreams was to provide worldwide wireless power.) In other words, a true Tesla motor would have no cost other than the purchase price and necessary maintenance.

This is a step in the right direction but it is only a novelty item for people with special incomes. If you can afford a $100,000 car, then you don't need to worry about saving money on gas. Even if you can afford a $30,000 car, gas is a minor concern. You're making good (enough) money, in most cases, even if you are able to own a car.

Even if you can afford the sticker price, it'd cost a fortune to insure, especially with the recent increase in turtle-shell-related accidents.

Yes, a great step in the right direction! However, I think you're looking at it slightly wrong. Just because a person can afford a very expensive car doesn't mean he or she is not worried about the environment or our dependence on foreign oil, and hence the point is not "saving money on gas", rather it's simply a better car for the environment, for the USA, and for you (the driver smile That's how I look at it. As for $30,000, that's actually less than a lot of people spend on a new automobile these days. In fact, by 2012 I wouldn't be surprised if that's less than the average cost of a car. Plus, gas prices aside, it's MUCH more convenient to simply plug the car at home and let it recharge than to have to go to a gas station. Anyway, I believe this is the future! I truly hope Tesla succeeds, and if they do other companies will have to follow suite (supposedly the Volt will be out in a few years, which is a fully electric that has gas "back-up"). Anyway, news like this makes me happy!

I think this is good news, but it does not make me happy. I would actually crack a smile if I had my own fusion generator and could be independent of all other power sources. It would need to be small enough to carry around and when I drive, it would power my car; at home it would power the house. So, a portable fusion generator is what I want. I want to be able to flick my boogers into it and have them, in turn, power my very life. Lol...

In that case, I think you might never smile...
