From a recent review of "The World Ends With You" by a Scripps Howard writer:

===========
Thriving on its "Kingdom Hearts," "Final Fantasy" and "XXXX" franchises, it's always refreshing to see Square Enix give a go at something new and unfamiliar. To have it succeed as well as it does with "The World Ends With You" is nothing short of spectacular.

All opinions aside, I didn't realize SE had an "XXXX" franchise.

I bet a cookie it's garbled JIS-code.

I don't know what JIS code is but it looks to me like he just forgot what he was going to put there and meant to go back to it once he found out.

JIS-code is a character encoding used for Japanese characters. By default our web browsers are usually set to an english only encoding (not Unicode) so Asian gylphs look like garbage when rendered.

In Firefox under View->Character Encoding->Japanese (Shift_JIS)

Although the garbage glyphs on a browser usually look like a string of "boxes" or other unintelligable characters rather than a string of plain "X"s, so I'm betting on User Error (ie: him).
