First of all, the good. Baby Kate has arrived and even though she's spending a little requisite time with nurses for check-ups, everything seems fine, and my sister's fears (she had contracted gestational diabetes - now cleared up - and a mysterious white shadow around the navel on the ultrasound caused no small amount of worry) have been allayed for the time being. She's apparently the complete spitting image of my sister's newborn picture (I'm set to visit later this evening), which has my mom's inner goblin grinning that the Mother's Curse - that a troublesome child will have to raise one exactly like their young self - will come to fruition.
On the downside...the local power company are morons. Power was cut off for a few hours yesterday for wire replacement, at the end of which a full and completely unrestrained surge of electricity was sent through, detonating four transformers in rapid succession and frying much of our blocks outlets and appliances. By comparison to our neighbors, we were extremely lucky, as the only two fatalities we suffered were my Wii's power cord (the console itself is unharmed; thank goodness the surge guard did its job)...and our computer. Charred circuitry, the whole works. The good news is that they sent cards door-to-door offering to replace appliances and attempt data restoration on cooked CPUs like ours, but ultimaterly, in the here and now, I've got nothing (i'm using said sister's comp to type this as I babysit). My apologies to those of you hanging on my regular MGS4 updates and erudite prose. All both of you.
Still, game systems and TVs are all OK, and I'm an uncle again. Not a bad weekend, all things considered.
