Hey! The movie was funny and cute. The soundtrack is amazing. The remakes of the ABBA songs are great! Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep have beautiful voices. I am a huge ABBA fan and I love the soundtrack from the movie. My favorite song would have to be "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme." If you are an ABBA fan too you should check out their catalog on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Abba/e/B000APR9C2/

Definitely agree with you, Marina.
But i don't think this website caters to this kind of movie, so it's not werth spending your breath here (the crowd here focuses more on action movies instead).

I don't think Marina is wasting her breath at all! My experience is that a good number of people around here have a wide-range of taste. So even though action movies might be more popular, Marina should feel free to express whatever she wants. Thanks for the post Marina and just ignore Shoe... smile

I'd love to see Mamma Mia! before it goes out of theaters.  I need at least one musical film under my belt for the year, especially in light of seeing no less than three last year. (Enchanted, Hairspray and Sweeney Todd, in that preferential order.)

Super Trouper, Ring Ring, Money, Money, Money and Knowing Me Knowing You are my all-time favorite ABBA songs.

Bernhardt Jul 30, 2008 (edited Jul 30, 2008)

Yeah, if I wanted Abba, I'd just go for the original album.

What's the point of this movie, anyway? They're just dancing around the whole time to ABBA music.

It's like, the plot's delivered in a few sentences "Girl's getting married, but doesn't know who her dad is...her mom is a slut who slept with three men, one of whom is possibly her father." And then, the rest of the time, they're just dancing around! It's like, what?! You're glad you're a bastard child?!

I'm sorry, I just had to say something, it was irritating me more than all get-out. IT. DOES. NOT. MAKE. SENSE!

allyourbaseare Jul 30, 2008

It's based off the Vegas show of the same name.  Sometimes I don't get this town sad

Ryu Jul 30, 2008

Wikipedia says it is a musical.  They obviously will dance around and sing.  I don't get what your problem is.  I have no interest in seeing it, much as I have no interest in seeing any other musical, but it doesn't bother me any.

absuplendous Jul 30, 2008

Not to speak for Bernhardt, but I think the issue he has with Mamma Mia is not merely that it's a musical with the singing and the dancing, but that unlike a traditional musical--where story/narrative/music are written in tandem with each other in mind--this is a bunch of pop songs strung together by a plot that's thin and trite by necessity, as that's the only way to accommodate a bunch of songs not intended for a musical.

I'm inclined to agree (if that is indeed his stance), but that said, I wouldn't discourage anyone from discussing it here; I've never seen a thread about any music turned away here.

Qui-Gon Joe Jul 30, 2008

Yeah, I dunno why one would think that this site has no interest in anything other than action movies (?????).  I haven't seen the movie yet, but I DID see the musical while it was in Chicago.  It's nothing terribly deep, but as pure escapist fun it's just that: fun.

The question I have is: how does the CD from the film compare to the CD from the stage version?  I was kind of unimpressed from what I've heard of Brosnan in clips on TV, but maybe it's better when it's all heard in context.  I'm not sure I have really high hopes, though, since I already prefer listening to the ABBA originals than the soundtrack from the play.

Idolores Jul 30, 2008

How's anyone gone hate on Abba? They're great. big_smile

Now that I think about it, I haven't seen a musical in a long, long while.

I don't think anything can compare to the original, but I can totally see why it would be a blast to hear them performed live (and I think a musical is perfect)...or karaoke of course smile

Yeah, the actual musical was a whole lot more fun than listening to the CD, even if it wasn't ABBA themselves (and since they're apparently never ever touring again, it's the closest one will ever get).

I hate to say it, but Brosnan is one of the reasons why I don't want to see the movie. One review said that one of Brosnan's numbers is "SOS," and I have no interest in hearing James Bond bastardizing my favorite ABBA song.

I only wrote this because i was the first to comment on the movie over a week ago and it went completely ignored, so i figured you guys just didn't care about it.

In the werds of Streep,

I felt the exact same way before i saw it, but then i decided to give it a chance and was pleasantly surprised.

The key to really enjoying this film though, is to pay an extra $5-$10 to whoever's up in the projector booth in exchange for them turning up the volume to concert-arena decibels whenever a musical number plays.

I had to do this the second time i went to see it in order to get the full experience, because a lot of projector-booth people are underpaid and therefore only care about doing their job minimally (unless it's a movie they actually care about, like say DARKEST NIGHT, which they cranked without any green coaxing).

One of the few things i can still agree with Nintendo on in this day and age is..

PLAY IT LOUD!!

Ryu Jul 31, 2008

I hate it when they 'play it loud'.  I'm not deaf and have little desire to go deaf.

Shoe Jul 31, 2008 (edited Jul 31, 2008)

By the way Mariana, since you like the whole 'Summertime in the countrysides of Sweden/Greece' type of music, you should definitely check out the Legend of Mana soundtrack if you haven't yet (since yer new here, a'oui?)

But avoid Dramatica like the plague, it was a silly-sounding bastardization of the original musics.

What kind of volumes do you consider loud?

Rap is taboo here for the most part.

He's not horrible. Not nearly as good as Amanda-Panda, but you're cheating yerself if you skip this just because of his role.

On the other hand, my advice is ignore this statement and form your own opinion!  tongue

You have it exactly right; I'm surprised I haven't been flamed yet.

Oh, didn't notice the question for me.  I'm not sure how to quantify 'volumes' I consider loud, but the word 'excessive' comes to mind.  As long as I can comfortably hear everything, such as easily understanding what is said in a whisper by a character, it's fine.
