Getting to play Friend Matches on Brawl online is causing me a headache.

I have a Virgin Cable Broadband Connection and a Linksys BEFSR41 Router. I only have a PC and my Wii to share the connection between and I have tried a few things.

I can't port-forward with my Wii as the Wii randomly assigns Ports, and I have assigned my Wii a Static IP address, and changed the MTU Value to 1500. I have even tried setting the MTU Value to 1365 in order to get the Wii to try harder for a connection, but that didn't work either!

It's not my connection as it works fine when I plug my Wii directly into my Modem.

It's works with Random Brawls, just not Friend Matches and I have disabled all of the Security options on the Router and the Wii.

Linksys don't seem to offer any workable advice and I am well and truly stumped.

Any solutions/suggestions would be appreciated, and if anyone can suggest a better Router that will DEFINITELY work, then please do.

I have a Wired connection in case anyone is unsure, and I cannot have Wi-Fi so that isn't an option.

This is driving me nuts and no-one seems to know what to do! hmm

It seems that all UDP ports have to be forwarded to your Wii, which is sloppy to say the least (great job, Nintendo).  And this could cause other issues if you have computers listening for UDP traffic (p2p, etc).  The recommended setting is to enable your Wii to be the "DMZ" computer, basically all inbound connections are directed to your Wii instead of being dropped or routed to another computer.  Look at the user guide for your router here:

Page 11, 25, 29 and 44 will be of interest to you.  If you need inbound connections to be sent to one of your computers instead of the Wii, you will probably have to have the DMZ feature turned off, so just use the DMZ setting when you're gaming online with the Wii.  DMZ will probably override port forwarding so your PC won't be able to receive connections.  Make sure you do not use a PC's address as the DMZ computer, it will be vulnerable to attack from the internet.

I've tried as you suggested but still no luck on Brawl.

I've got loads of reading through pages of documents to do, but it's 5am and it's too much. I'll read it all when I wake up.

Thanks for trying though. smile

If you have no other port forwarding options set, and your Wii has a static IP address, and you set the DMZ option directing inbound connections to your Wii, it will work or your router isn't working.  Since you've been tweaking settings like the MTU, you might want to reset the factory settings on the router, and try it again from the top.  There might even be a firmware update for the router.

The DMZ feature overrides the firewall features of the router and is conceptually the same as plugging the Wii directly into the modem, which you said is working.  Speaking of which, are you using the "Wii LAN Adapter" (ethernet->USB)?  If your router has wireless, you can try that if you like.  Nintendo has various suggestions getting the Wii to work with wireless networks.
