So, are there fans of Pushing Daisies here?  (I vaguely recall XLord and shdwrlm mentioning it at one point, at least.)  I've yet to see a single episode of the show, but was considering picking up the Season One DVD set.  Aside from the many accolades it's received, the whole Tim Burton meets Dr. Seuss meets forensics science angle has me most intrigued.

Is the show still ongoing at this point?  I've heard that Season 2 was just about to start airing; guess that means this is a good time to play catch-up, eh?

That warranted a small chuckle. Having little knowledge of TV shows since 1996 or so (Sliders is where my knowledge terminates), I had assumed this had something to do with death, because of the slang meaning.

Yes, this does have something to do with death. I'm surprised I've never heard anyone talk about it. All I hear about is American Idol, which is thoroughly revolting.

I heard the series is good, so I do want to watch it at some point. Recently I've been watching Lars Von Trier's The Kingdom which is excellent! It does in fact remind me of Silent Hill in a number of ways smile Also, I would like to note that the original Get Smart is finally getting a DVD release!

cheers,

I watched all of the first season and the first episode of the second before losing interest. It's a cute show, some may say TOO cute. But once I finally figured out that it's basically a procedural (a hated genre of mine), all the whimsy in the world couldn't save it.

When the second season is over (its fifth episode just aired), I might grab it on Blu-ray. If anything else, the show has OUTSTANDING production values.

I love The Kingdom! Such a weird series, spooky and funny at the same time (apart from SH, it reminds me of Twin Peaks as well).

Season 1 was fantastic.  You should definitely rent or grab the Blu-Ray set if you want to see a great show.  Season 2 started off pretty rough and hasn't been as good as S1, though the last two episodes they aired were pretty good.

Definetly watch season 1 as it is only 8 or 9 episodes anyway and the story is really interesting.

I been watching season 2 online as episodes are released from being on American tv and it get even better. It is a shame that it might be cancelled though because of the ratings.

Hopefully it will never end with a cliffhanger like Veronice Mars which I just recently discovered on the on demand service I recently subcribed here in the UK.

"The facts are these: It's been eight hours, forty-nine minutes and six seconds since I went off to Best Buy to buy the Pushing Daisies Season One set - taking into account Daylight Savings Time, of course.  And it's been one hour, seven minutes, and fourteen seconds since I watched the first two episodes of said set.  Again, taking into account DST."

So far, it's a highly likeable show, even though I initially found it irking how the dialogue is delivered so rapidly and drolly.  The production values are indeed high and the direction imaginative, and the plots are engaging throughout.  Chi McBride is an absolute hoot as the knitting, corpse-squeamish Emerson, and I enjoy every moment (brief as they are) when Sy Richardson as the coroner shows up.  Favorite part so far was when Aunt Lily...... came packin' heat with that shotgun.  That, and Chenoweth's musical number in the second episode.

Maybe I'll make my next car purchase a Dandy Lion SX.... so long as I make sure to keep it under 70, drive during the day, and keep the seat-warmer off.

The show is definitely cute, but it also has a deliciously twisted sense of humor. I was surprised by how gruesomely hilarious some of the deaths were. My favorite is still the one from episode 6, where the victim repeatedly (and accidentally) stabs himself with a dog brush after being poisoned by one of his many wives. Comedy gold!

But once I finally figured out that it's basically a procedural (a hated genre of mine), all the whimsy in the world couldn't save it.

What I love about the show is that it's not just a straight procedural. The characters grow and there are story arcs that play out over multiple episodes. It's just a shame they had to cut/delay one of the more interesting arcs because of the writer's strike.

I also love the wordplay in the writing. Everything is either punny or full of alliteration.

Veronica Mars was my go-to show for whodunits before Pushing Daisies came along. I hear there's talk of a movie, which would be great if true, though I fear they'd make Papa Mars be the victim for shock and emotional impact.

I have to go with Wanderer on this one.  I've watched all the episodes up to this point, but frankly it annoys me so I'm taking it off my list.  I kept going with it this long because it's colorful and unusual and it seems like I should like it, but honestly all the characters are grating (except the PI), everything's a little too precious and clever for its own good, and there's a sort of grotesque comedy element that's supposed to be funny but is instead pretty distasteful.  Did anyone see that recent episode that had a corpse spraying the protagonists with embalming fluids from various wounds/orifices?  So, yeah.  Still, the show has a few decent qualities and it's certainly popular enough, so maybe I'm just a humbug.

charmed699 Nov 4, 2008

I definetly can't see why it had such an open ending as it was quirky and rather unqiue compared to most tv series. It would be fortunate for it to have a movie but as you say a shame if any major characters were killed for dramactic effect.

The latest episode of Pushing Daisies was quite surreal and it's nice to see how quickly the setting can change every episode. smile

possible spoiler:

It left me thinking of how I could play poker with sushi (as long as I get to eat the cards afterwards).

Too bad.  This season had a rough start, but it was getting better.  Oh well.

Drat. The only good news is that Bryan Fuller says he'll probably go back to Heroes, and that's definitely a show that's in need of being brought back from the dead.

charmed699 wrote:

Unfortunately, it will. Fuller has mentioned that episode 13 ends with a huge cliffhanger, but he hopes that he'll be able to resolve it in the future with comics or a movie. How great would it be to have a feature film directed by Tim Burton?

If it's any consolation, Varese Sarabande is releasing a CD of music from the show just before Christmas.  The soundtrack has 35 tracks, an actual booklet with credits and notes from the composer and the creator of the series, and the disc itself even looks like a cherry pie -- pretty sweet, eh?  *Cough*  I'm pretty happy because the music is one of the things I've most liked about the series, and since it won the composer an Emmy recently I guess I'm not the only one.

By the way, I never actually stopped watching the series even though I had intended to earlier.  I figured with it being up for cancellation I might as well stick around to the end since I had already made it this far, so it's kind of ironic to hear it will end with a big cliffhanger.  I guess that won't be quite so painful since I'm not exactly attached to the story, but hopefully they'll do a TV movie to wrap things up next year or something.  That's the problem with continuing storylines -- they're almost bound to leave you hanging eventually unless the series is massively popular like Lost.  Drat indeed.
