Call of Duty 4: World at War
(Tom Clancy's) End War
Fallout 3
Far Cry 2
Gears of War 2
Resistance 2

...

Hly sht...are we just afraid of the end of the world lately, or what?!

I keep seeing advertisements for all these games, and it's kind of like, are they advertising for a video-game, or are they trying to persuade you into investing for a bomb shelter?! (ESPECIALLY that Fall Out 3 ad: "Prepare for the Future!!")

I've always been a fan of the post-apocalyptic genre, because the concept of how people would live through some sort of cataclysmic destruction is interesting, but so many of these things released and advertised around the same exact damn time, when the world is already actually experiencing economic, political, and social decline? Yeesh...play on people's fears of the end of the world, why don't you...

Well, to be fair, most are sequels, so it may be a continuation of something previously going on?

Needs more World of Ruin though...And Doom!

COD4 is Modern Warfare, not World At War.

And to be fair, World At War focuses on events during WWII.  Not exactly fodder for the conventional post-apocalyptic genre.

Ehh, true. Still, all released around the same damn time?! WHAT are they thinking? That people have THAT much money to purchase them all around the same time?! Those're all series that are roughly similar to each other, and a person interested in the genre would probably like picking them all up...

I know, it's the Christmas buying season and all...

But, hey, I'm squeamish about spending $40-50 on a brand new PS2 game (not that there're a whole lot of them coming out anymore) 'cuz I know they'll plummet in value within a few months (except for the really RARE stuff that comes out of NIS America and Atlus).

And now I gotta pay upwards of $60 for brand new PS3 and XBox 360 games?! Yeesh...

Ehh, see, there're so damn many of these games, I can't keep track of 'em all!

Meh. Go look at the PC-88's catalog. There were quite a few end of the world-ish titles even back then (The Screamer comes to mind.)

I get what you are getting at though. smile

You stand on the city of disaster,
the Beast City, where the Biological Intelligence
in Artificial System, what we call "BIAS" locates.
Nobody knows about what has been going on "BIAS".
You could hear nothing but deep breathing of "BIAS".
The only way to survive is ...
DEHUMANIZE YOURSELF AND FACE TO BLOODSHED.

Did you see it on JRK's screenshot site, or somewhere else?

near-apocalypse and post-apocalypse games abound, although quite a few of them seem to be RPGs of some sort.

I just picked up Resistance 2 for my sister's boyfriend for christmas and while money isn't the issue in that case playing $60 for a game just blows... it just sucks. Makes buying $15~20 SNES classics seem awesome.

Totally, man. The best time to get into games is to "rediscover" them - FFXII for $20? Yes. Donkey Kong Country for $10? Yes.

Although, I remember paying $69.99 for Weaponlord on the SNES when it hit the shelves. Man, that's embarassing.

I dunno, I'd still pay $60 for FFXII.

And that's one of the reasons why you're awesome. smile
