Currently it's -10 F outside (-23 C) which pretty much bites ass, as well as biting other things like my toes.  It took only a few seconds for my mustache to turn into icicles from my breath.  My car's engine could barely even muster up the strength to start.

Those bears have the right idea - Wake me up in APRIL, cause I wanna freaking hibernate in my cave all the way till Spring.

Cedille Jan 15, 2009

I suffer from fever much more in April due to my allergy to pollen.

Angela Jan 15, 2009

Yeah, we're getting hit with some really low temps here in NYC.  Not to mention the snow.

Show of hands, who's ready for Spring? (Except for Cedille, of course. :p)

SonicPanda Jan 15, 2009

My job requires me to work mostly outside for 6-8 hours at a time, so yeah, not the biggest fan of cold weather. On the other hand I do get away with sneaking my mp3 player inside my burly coat this time of year, so it's not all bad.

allyourbaseare Jan 15, 2009

Man, it was like 65 degrees Farenheit yesterday in Vegas.  I miss the cold.

Flick's grandson?  ;)  I did that once, actually..... except it was on the metallic siding part of our old refrigerator.  My mom yelled at me after prying me off with hot water, my brother was beside himself with laughter, and my tongue hurt for days.

No, you don't.

I have to admit that even here in London temperatures have been really low compared to other years. It might be normal where you guys live but I have seen snow and even the river nearby completely frozen. It certainly gives me more reasons to just stay in and play new games before new term starts next week. tongue

So in short don't come to the UK expectine any improvements.

Bernhardt Jan 15, 2009 (edited Jan 15, 2009)

Heh, yeah, so much for global warming... (-_-);

After Christmas and New Year's are down, and all the shiny lights go with 'em, it's time for the warmth again, I says!

We had a wretched winter here in Seattle. First, the record snowfall (about a foot, which might not sound like much for you Eastern people but in Seattle, it completely shut down the city for two weeks) and then we got record flooding. Spring can't come too soon.

Qui-Gon Joe Jan 15, 2009

Well, the whole global climate change thing IS allegedly supposed to cause lots more spikes and volatile weather in general; this winter certainly embodies that theory.

And yeah, I just got home and the car's outside thermometer was reading -10.  I can't imagine what it's going to get down to tonight once it actually gets dark.  x_x

That said... I still like winter better than summer.  tongue

Crash Jan 15, 2009

Tuesday and today, when I went to work, it was -20°F.  The temperature hasn't topped zero since Monday in Minneapolis.

When it's this cold out, I comfort myself by remarking that I don't live in Winnipeg.  If I lived in Winnipeg, I'd probably be glad that I didn't live in Yellowknife.

Kirin Lemon Jan 15, 2009

Just caught the weather forecast - 28 below zero is the forecast for tomorrow morning here in Wisconsin!  Lovely.

Adoru Jan 15, 2009

It was -26C, -40C with the wind factor here today in Quebec. My hand froze solid as I was trying to fill my windshield liquid tank. I hate Winter!

That's nothing. I had to fight off a two headed polar bear with nothing but a broken shovel and some windex.

Carl Jan 16, 2009

Ugg, even at home, the cold is going straight through the walls today....
Not fun at all.   and Qui-gon can STILL enjoy winter??

SquareTex Jan 16, 2009

Right now it 40 F in the Austin, Texas area.

I'll admit that it's much warmer than most of the U.S. right now, but you gotta understand...we're not USED to this! <;)

On the other hand, some friends came down from Canada and New England for my younger brother's wedding...and they LOVED it. smile

I prefer winter over summer as well. At least in winter you can layer your clothes to fight the cold, but there's nothing you can do for the heat in the summer (at least not until air-conditioned clothes are available). Waiting in 100+ degree temperatures down in the NYC subways is not my idea of fun.

Although I can somewhat handle the cold, I find snow to be unbearable.

Jodo Kast Jan 17, 2009

The coldest temperature I've observed so far this winter (my car's thermometer) is 3F. I might as well just run around naked. My clothing retains much less heat when it drops below 10F and it feels like I'm naked.

My room in my student house has issues. Due to the fake double glazing of the house, every window is prone to condensation at moderate temperature. My room gets it the worst since it is smallest (hence cheapest) and that can lead to the ceiling dripping. To stop that happening, it's necessary to keep a big vent open and open the windows often. The room is therefore always really cold and I usually have to put on four layers to feel OK. Wearing a coat indoors and sometimes in bed doesn't really prepare you well for the even colder temperatures outside.

Daniel K Jan 31, 2009

Its all a matter of perspective, Carl. If its any comfort, think about it like this: there are places out there that are a lot colder than where you live. Check out this very interesting travel account from The Independent:

Yakutsk: Journey to the coldest city on earth.

The title speaks for itself. Its amazing and cool (no pun intended) that people even live there. Makes -10 F seem like scorching summer.

On topic, I'm personally really itching for a proper winter. People think Scandinavia is a really cold region since its so far north, but that reputation is BS, largely thanks to the Gulf Stream heating up the area. Especially here on the Swedish west coast, the winters are really mild and disappointing, I haven't even seen heavy snowfall since I moved here two years ago. So yes, I'd like to have a real winter for once. Well, maybe not Yakutsk-style. smile

i bet they dont have a much of a problem with public urination...
but imagine being able to save your farts as sculptures...

i heard that there is a russian car that runs really great up there too.. its call a Yakura...

Well, if it makes anyone feel better, the average temperature of the Universe is 2.7 K or -270.3 Celsius smile
Oh, and in case anyone is thinking "that's just a guess, people don't know that for certain", that's actually one thing that is known to a very very very good accuracy. The Universe is on average that cold, and it's only getting colder!! So, be happy you happen to be in a warm part tongue

cheers,

American Nightmare Feb 1, 2009

It's been getting into the low 80s the past few days here in the San Diego area, with temps dipping down into the high 40s at night.  Brrrr! wink

Carl Feb 1, 2009 (edited Feb 1, 2009)

My question of "why would anyone want to live there and endure -50 C temps?" is of course answered by profits, which makes people do all sorts of otherwise avoidable things.  People are willing to ensure all sorts of torture if it pays well enough.

"The region is rich in gold and diamonds, which is what lay behind the Soviets' decision to turn Yakutsk into a major regional centre, first using the Gulag labour system, and later with the resettlement of thousands of volunteers seeking adventure, higher salaries and the chance to build socialism on ice. The corporate giant Alrosa, which owns Russia's diamond monopoly, is based in the region and accounts for 20 per cent of the world's supply of rough diamonds."

Socialism on Ice.. starring tonya harding, a heartwarming musical for the whole family..
