Anyone seen this yet? What'd y'all think? I never can articulate what I liked and didn't like about a lot of movies . . .
Tell me what you thought if you seen it!

Wanderer's seen it:

I still haven't had a chance to go myself, though my sister has. She came up with a very similar opinion as Wanderer's, that there was a surprisingly emotional void throughout, and the story core as a whole was unfulfilling. But she gave top marks to the art design, music and make-up effects. (She also added that a young-looking Brad Pitt is, and I quote, "yum-tastic.") ;)
I think that those are excellent points. It was trying to chronicle a very unusual story, and I respect that. But you're right when I think about it. The characters didn't captivate me. I'm not well versed in film studying and whatnot, so I don't know what to chalk that up to. Acting was great, and I liked the writing, so I am perplexed.
Cate Blanchett as Daisy drove me nuts the entire film, though. Redheads are me kryptonite, dammit.
I think what it comes down to is that the film chronicled the life of a character but I felt nothing for the character. I never got an impression of what he wanted from life, what his dreams were. I never felt that he changed as he grew younger. Part of this is Brad Pitt's performance (which didn't have the weight necessary) but the writing glossed over large chunks of his life, leaving the viewer playing a game of catch up.
There are some astonishing scenes in the movie (when Pitt appears in full-on "Thelma and Louise" beauty) and the visuals are sumptuous. It's very well made, certainly... but the emotional core just isn't there.
