Ah yes, Gary Larson does have a thing for cows! I don't recall which are my favorite. Most are very good.
His insect cartoons are great! So are his caveman cartoons, and his God cartoons (God at His Computer) are fantastic! And he also had a great one about "Hopeful Parents" of Nintendo players Anyway, a bunch of great cartoons can be found here:

Also, if you are into science, technology, and the funnies, you have to check out Sidney Harris!

Also, similar to the far side only quite a bit darker and more raunchy, is the The Perry Bible Fellowship! Here's one for Mario fans

Well, if anyone would know where my sig came from, it would certainly be you, since you also bought the encyclopedic sized collection.
"You're sick, Jessy! Sick, sick, sick!" is the one where a cow is out barbecuing. (At first I thought it was the one where the cows were tasting their meat in the barn.)
I've always liked the one where the Indian says to the other, "Did you detect something ominous in the way they said 'See you later'?" (As Christopher Columbus sails away.) I remember that one because it illustrates the meaning of "ominous" very well, which was a word I didn't know when I initially read it.

Wow, I'm impressed you remembered that. :) Yeah, it is a gorgeous collection, but damned if I ever got through the entire thing. I haven't even touched it since getting it back in 2003.

"Interesting. I'd say we taste like chicken."

One of my all-time favorites is "In God's Kitchen" -- where God is pulling a cooking pan containing the Earth out of the oven, and He says, "Something tells me this thing is only half-baked."
Ah the nostalgia. I had a t-shirt with this on it back it high school. Had totally forgotten about it until this thread! The finishing touch was in the bottom corner it had the "Tastes like chicken" bit.
I wasn't an avid reader of the comic but I do remember a lot of the insect ones being pretty funny.
Avatar, if you really laugh at shit like Perry Bible Fellowship, then you ARE sick. You get the Brandy seal of approval.
f---ing sweet. Reading the archives right now, and this one just completely made my day.

PBF is just awesome! Some of them make you laugh no matter how many times you see them! Larson would love this one:

My memory is impressive to others, and sometimes intimidating - or scary. A good example of my memory is from an event about 10 years ago. I was at work and a woman came in to put reservation signs on the tables. I recognized her, because she was fired from my high school for having sex with a student (it didn't make the news, not back then). I knew her brother because he was on the swim team (16 years ago total, 6 years ago relative to this event), as was I. I then predicted that he would show up. He did. I told him that when I saw his sister I figured he'd show up. I never knew this guy (Joe) very well, but I seemed to alarm him. He backed away and asked me where the restroom was. He then avoided me the rest of the evening. (It was later that I learned that other people rarely have good memories. I often assumed everyone remembers everything I do, since I remember everything they do. It's not difficult, since everyone has a unique feature, whether physical or behavioral, that helps me to form memories. I don't consciously do it.)
What I like the most about it is that I can see the ones I missed. I wasn't reading newspapers when Larson was originally submitting them. I haven't gone through the whole thing yet and it sits untouched for years at a time.
I can recall a few more I really like:
The cartoon with the cavemen seated at lab tables, squinting into little dishes. "Early microbiologists."
Cavemen again, with a small park titled "Future World". In one part of the park, a picture shows a man striking a match to make fire. The observing caveman says, "Yeah, right".
Bears with construction hats are standing next to a large pipe, which empties into some guy's house. "Animal waste management."
A child is standing next to his mom in a large crowd of people. There is a face hovering near him and the kid tries to touch it. His mom says, "Don't touch it honey, it's just another face in the crowd."
The one that I always remember is a caveman one where they're all sitting around eating a kill and staring at one particular caveman, who is holding a piece of meat in both hands with his pinkies sticking up. The caption was something like "[Insert caveman's name here] makes the first known 'faux pas.'" No, I don't have Jodo or Angela's memory.
Then there's the one where "cat fud" is labeled all around the dryer in someone's house, the cat is staring into it, and the dog is hiding behind the washer saying "oh please, oh please..."
I know my mother's favorite was the one of Hell with a sign sitting off to the side welcoming people to Hell and saying that all the food is made of tofu. She of course is a vegan.

My favorite Hell comic is the one titled "Concepts of Hell." People are confined to cylinders, with a small slot for accepting magazines. The magazines are about the outdoors.

My favorite "bears" one is the classic cross hairs one, which adorns the cover of "Beyond The Far Side."

Cats have it pretty tough in the comic. I recall Larson detailing in The Prehistory of The Far Side Collection that he got a lot of flack for the comics "Tethercat" and the one where it shows a cat tied up and hanging from a window. In the latter, the guy says, "The dog ain't going for the new cat, Emma." A lot of angry readers took it to mean that the PEOPLE hung the cat up as bait for the dog -- when it actuality, it was the dog who did it, as a way to signify that the cat's not wanted.

Love the one where the maintenance guy goes, "Well shoot, I must have been looking at the work order upside down!" And above the devil's doorway hangs a sign that says "999."
i think the caveman's name was often Thag...
This is probably one of my favorites. Love the play on "Catcher in the Rye."

There are plenty of others I like, such as the classic "School for the Gifted." I wish he was still making them.

That's the one I know the best of the entire series, but that one seems like the Far Side that everyone seems to remember.
