1. Sound of the the dog laughing at you in duck hunt
2. The buzz sound of metal blades in Mega Man 2.

In no particular order!

- Enemy dying sound, the mechanical *DISH* (NES Megaman series)
- Weapon placement in inventory in (Diablo) *KI-CHING
- Samus' blaster, completely stock (Super Metroid) *PEW PEW*
- Ganados head exploding preferably from handgun (RE4) *SPLUT*
- Menu selecting sound (Tokyo Extreme Racer Drift 2) *KSSSSHEW*
- Pikachu's growl (Pokemon Red + Blue) *can't do this one*
- Hitting dude with lead pipe (River City Ransom) *KLONG*
- Hitting 'critical' area on Judgement Ring (Shadow Hearts 2) *CHWING*
- Ammo pickup (Duke Nukem 3D) *CLIKT CLIKT*

Heh, I doubt I can come up with 10. But let's see:

-the bing Mario makes when he jumps
-collecting a coin in SMB
-when you find an item (Legend of Zelda)
-when you find an item (Metroid)

that's about all that comes to mind. Interesting that they're all NES smile

Those are more jingle than sound effect, aren't they?

I'd like to add:

- Megaman dying (every version)

and my absolute all-time favorite:

- The menu pop-up sound in MM3

The top 3 most globally recognizable SFX would probably be these:

Mario's Coin sound, Sonic's Ring sound, Pacman's Waka-Waka sound.

It'd be a close match between those 3 which is more widely known, but EVERYONE knows those sounds: kids, grandparents, non-gamers, etc..

The NES version of Gauntlet had my favorites.

1. Acid blobs (the high pitched whiny sound cracked me up for some reason)
2. Acquiring gruel (Mmmmmm!)

NES version of Contra:

3. Gurgly death sounds of the giant heart at the end.

Legend of Zelda:

4. Breathing/grumbling noise of bosses when in an adjacent room. It effectively increased stress levels.

There are too many different treasure/jewel/coin chimes, along with thrusting weapon/gun shot/bomb noises. And I can't really think of anything else at the moment. I think the four above are quite unique.

Since I have RE4 on the brain (har har), I'd have to say that my favorite sound effect is the exploding headshot SFX. It's simultaneously wet and crunchy and makes the Ganado's heads sound hollow yet still full of splattery goodness. YUM!

Let's see if I can think of nine other ones:

- Heaven Smiles' laughs in Killer7
- The wet "fountain" SFX when you dice someone up in No More Heroes
- The wet "fountain" SFX in Castlevania SotN when you kill a Bloody Zombie
- The cling and clang of collecting bolts in Ratchet and Clank
- Sly Cooper's footsteps while he's sneaking around
- Pyramid Head dragging his sword in Silent Hill 2 (scariest shit ever)
- The throat slit SFX from Metal Gear Solid 3
- The menu noise from Final Fantasy (oh, nostalgia)
- The noise when you kick someone when they're already dead in Vice City (what?)

back then they actually had to make sound effects with the limitations of the chip, and when we heard them we would think, "whoah that sounds so real",, and it was thrilling (the exception being Darth Vader repeating "impressive" over and over and over and over in super empire strikes back)

now they just digitally sample whatever sound they want and put it right in the game.
