While researching the music of Doom/DoomII/Final Doom I came upon the wikipedia entry for John Romero. Reading this lead me to the entry for Daikatana:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daikatana

Needless to say, the story that surrounds the game's development and the aftermath of its release is/was much more interesting than the game itself. This made me wonder, what other games are "infamous" for all the wrong reasons?

In the same spirit of FPS, Duke Nukem Forever probably takes the cake. Well, that is if it ever comes out; who knew it'd literally take "forever"...

I still have that huge issue of PC Gamer from 1997 with that game on its cover. Now 12 years later, a rumor has it it will be released this year.

A link I forgot I had: follies.werewolves.org

About Battlecruiser 3000 and what is allegedly the longest flame war in the Internet's history. If you thought Dyack was a little dotty with the 'Owned by Too Human' challenge, read on for some real mania.

This thread cannot exist without mention of Thrill Kill

There, mentioned.

Totally, forgot about that one. It was pretty much nixed because it was a poor time to release a violent game wasn't it?

I think the sequence went:

1. Virgin prepares to release Thrill Kill,
2. Virgin (or at least the North American game division thereof) is bought out by EA,
3. EA says not-only-no-but-hell-no,
4. Another publisher commisions it to be modified and re-skinned to make a Wu-Tang fighting game.

^ Ah, ok. I knew they were interested in taking the game engine and applying it to another, less violent game but didn't know about virgin being bought out.

Yeah, it would be hard to see EA releasing such a title.

Conker's Quest, or should I say Twelve Tales: Conker 64, or maybe Conker's Bad Fur Day, or how about Conker: Live & Reloaded?

Other infamous games:

Robotech 64
Superman 64
War Gods (KABUKI JOE!)

Remembered another one, kind of - Valkyrie Wilde, a Tomb Raider knockoff with completely nude heroine. If it doesn't sound familiar, it's because it was an April Fools' joke in PSM Magazine. But it's a bit infamous because one of the major networks (I want to say NBC) did a report on the game without realizing it was fake. For that reason it was also PSM's LAST April Fools' joke.

Oh, and let me throw Night Trap out there. Shadowy thugs drilling into young womens' necks!...or something. Didn't follow it too closely at the time because I was naive and read Nintendo Power, so Sega was the ENEMY and I didn't care.

Haha, I remember Valkyrie Wilde! I knew it was a fake because the screenshots were basically modded shots from Tomb Raider 3 which either was released shortly after, or before. I liked the art they commissioned for the game, though. Anime chicks are yummy.

Hahaha! Night Trap was a terrible game. The AVGN covered it briefly in his Sega CD review. big_smile
