Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

Just saw the coverage of this at IGN and it took all of one screenshot for me to fall in love with the art style.  It really does scream Miyazaki in the best sort of way.  Looks great in video as well, with smooth animation that's artsy but naturalistic (for the most part), tons of parallax scrolling and a promising orchestral soundtrack that reminds me of SimAnimals OST (though by a different composer, Daniel Sadowski).

If we can manage to get another couple games along the lines of this and Muramasa for Wii I think the expression "2D renaissance" wouldn't be unwarranted.

A few points I do hope they tweak after watching the vids:
-The boy shouting "Hey!" and "Blob!" is cute the first couple times but would probably get old quick.
-Generally the animation is quite nice but there are a couple areas that could use work.  (The boy's jumps look a bit too floaty for starters.)
-I hope they find some way to access the jellybean inventory in real time instead of having to always stop the action.  Maybe via the GameCube controller's C stick?

Anyhow I'm definitely looking forward to this one and was quite surprised to see the game being remade in the first place.

I was amazed by this game the first time I saw it.  I'm really happy to see Daniel Sadowski doing the score, as he doesn't work on enough games.  He wrote one of my favorite tracks from that "Best of the Best" album from Gamemusiccentral awhile back.

Anyway, Sadowski seems really excited about the project.  He and the project director from WayForward had a lot to say about it here:

Somehow I managed to miss this thread with being caught up with the end of the school year back in June.  This game looks AMAZING, and it might well be the only instant-buy I have for the fall.  Has everyone seen the new trailer?

The dedicated hug button gives me faith in humanity, I think.

Hey Adam, it's true, I did not remember that there was a Boy and His Blob thread which had a whole two messages posted back at the start of June. Therefore I started a new thread. I'm curious why you had decided to close my thread? I mean, does it really make a difference if someone starts a new thread on a subject which hasn't been touched in months? I thought your reaction was strange. If any of us want to post a new thread, do we now need to search and see that there wasn't a similar thread posted the 3+ months ago?

Back to the actual subject at hand...
I hope this game turns out to be as adventurous as it looks!

Except you've developed the habit of doing it over and over, sometimes with existing threads that were far more active than that.

Searching before creating a whole new topic, as I've mentioned before, is not quite as difficult as it looks. (Most of us make it easy to do searches by placing the actual topic name in the Subject header; it just makes searching the archives later so much easier, instead of having to second guess a topic.)

By NOT searching, you're doing two things.  One, you're creating another unnecessary thread on a topic that may have already been amply covered.  No one wants to have that split, to have to wade through multiple threads, cross-referencing one with the other just to acquire the information that could've conveniently been placed in one.

Two, it's just poor etiquette.  You're not going to search, so what you're basically saying is that you're choosing to ignore everyone else's contributed posts of a previous thread, and worse, forcing people to have to repeat themselves for the benefit of your new thread.

Augh! At the risk and expense of sounding like a 12 year old girl, this game looks so goddamn cute!

I ignored this game on the NES way, way back in the day simply because it wasn't Megaman (there's your incredibly deep five-year old reasoning right there).

Well, personally I don't feel like searching EVERY time I plan on posting something. Even if it's not a hard thing to do, why should it be necessary? Also, by everyone else's contributed post, you mean the whole 2 posts that were before mine? Is it really wrong to just link the 3month old thread to mine? Frankly, if there 100, or 50, 25, 10 posts it might be a different ballgame, but when there are 2 posts, why shut-down the newer thread? Honestly, seems silly. As for forcing people to repeat themselves... NO. I'm not forcing anyone to do anything. If people want, they can repeat themselves, but seeing as in this case there's not much to repeat, why the big deal? I've noticed a lot of the "old-timers" have stopped regularly posting around here, think I might just join that group smile

I wouldn't take it personally, avatar, it's just it makes a lot more sense to have the discussion in one thread, especially for such a relatively minor title as this.  If the second thread had some sort of different focus than the original one then I could see a reason for getting a second thread going, but that wasn't the case.  It's totally fine that you missed the first thread, I was just taking the appropriate action to compensate.

And yes, the game does look nice!

That said, I don't like the new trailer at all.  It reminds me of the English Ponyo trailer - they're taking something simple and charming and trying to present it as an "epic adventure", when they should be embracing (and presenting) its true qualities.

Why? Because some chick you never even met scolded you? Come on, man.

Smeg Sep 5, 2009

Adam, don't you have the ability to "merge" threads when someone creates a redundant topic? That would seem like the most friendly option.

Adam Corn Sep 5, 2009

There's currently no functionality to move posts to different topics.  That should be a feature of the next version of this forum software, which will hopefully be finalized in the next few months.

That is totally how 12 year old girls talk.  wink

And yeah, everything about the game is adorable and I love it and I want it and I don't care what people think about that!  And the music is sounding great so far too.  AND I believe this one's launching at $40 and not $50?  Eat that, HD!

High five for people not acting their age!

Trailer looks great, but the pre-release buzz is that this game is very difficult.  I guess we'll see.

Considering the original was hard as nails, I wouldn't have it any other way!

brandonk Sep 13, 2009

This game looks awesome!  I never played the original, but I would definitely invest some time in this one.  Looking forward.

Bernhardt Oct 6, 2009

Wow whee!

If gameplay footage hadn't been included, I would've thought this was a full-length, animated feature film!...which, depending on how well it does, I wouldn't be surprised if they just so much as created an animated series! I guess it's the narrator and the soundtrack that does it.

Gameplay footage reminds me of Kirby, Klonoa, heck, even Super Mario World 2 ~ Yoshi's Island.

This's coming out in just a few days...I might just go ahead and spring for it...

Zane Oct 6, 2009

OK. Even me, Mr. Apathy, was moved by that trailer. This game looks awesome!

Gametrailers has their video review up: 8.5.  "A Boy and His Blob is a slow burn that requires patience, so those looking for a bit more action should stay mindful of this.  However, if you're hankering for a great 2D platformer with clever, inventive puzzles, then you'll find plenty to love here."

About their only qualms are the use the nunchuck's less-than-precise analog stick for movement (they would've preferred the Wiimote's d-pad), and the annoying, excessive use of the boy's calling out to the blob.

brandonk Oct 14, 2009

I read IGN's review (7.5 I think), and generally, I think IGN is on point...but I still want to play this one...I will probably wait however for the used bin as I have my hands full with Ys Seven (untranslated).  I'm on vacation this week, so maybe I'll find the time to also finally play through Metal Gear 4 and Ghostbusters...I'm such a slacker!!
