So I've been thinking of altering the New Posts page so that it basically displays ALL threads from all forums, sorted from newest to oldest.

There are times when I've planned to check a recent thread via the New Posts page, only to be annoyed to find that it's been bumped off the list by a different set of new posts.  There are also times when I'd like to browse through all the various threads regardless of forum, and this would be the way to do it.

Threads with truly "new" posts will still be in bold as they are now, so they'll be easy to find.  Ideally I'll also have a separate header for them to make the distinction more clear.

If anyone has a strong opinion either way about the matter please post.  I don't want to go through the trouble of making the change only to find it's ill-received.

I think I've complained about this several times already, but I seem to be the only one, so maybe I'm doing something wrong or missing some option somewhere, but it kind of irks me that New Posts are only marked as unread after some time has passed, and not after actually reading them.
If I spend too much time in one thread (which happens with links to long articles), when I get back, all Unread posts are now marked as read, just because too much time has passed.
But when I actualy HAVE read something, it remains marked as unread, just because not enough time has passed.

Doesn't seem to make any sense.
Am I the only one with this problem, or do other people actually prefer this!?

No, Amazingu, I've with you on that! Personally, I'd prefer the New Posts page to be as it is now but with new posts retaining their new-ness until I've read them or logged out, rather than time-lapse.

Adam, if you decide to implement your idea, I can't really complain so long as it retains the bolded true-new threads (and I won't complain at all if you can change the behavior as Amazingu and I have described), but I do think it will be a lot more crowded than its current form. I can see the upside to your idea, though.

Amazingu, you're not doing anything wrong and you're not missing anything, that's just the way the forum code is set up.  It's not a small thing that I can change easily to work the way you (and probably a lot of others) prefer, until the entire forum gets a major upgrade.  That might happen within the next few months but I can't say for sure.

In the meantime what works well for me is from the New Posts page to open the whole batch of new threads that I want to read in new tabs, then go through reading them one by one.  In most cases your next refresh of the New Posts page will be as it should be.

I think I might set the New Posts page to default to say the posts for the last week, which will give some leeway to browse recent threads that aren't entirely new, while not having to navigate through dozens of pages for the whole forum.

Thanks for clearing that up, Adam! smile

I prefer the new posts link as it is.

Not sure what you mean by "There are times when I've planned to check a recent thread via the New Posts page, only to be annoyed to find that it's been bumped off the list by a different set of new posts.  There are also times when I'd like to browse through all the various threads regardless of forum, and this would be the way to do it."

I'm not sure how a new post can get bumped off the list by a different set of new posts.  New posts should be posts that have new replies since your last visit, not posts that have new replies in the last 'timeframe' (timeframe being some number of minutes, hours, days) or 'x' posts that have new replies per forum.

I only ever use the new posts link now.  If I reply to a post and it goes unreplied to then I never see it again, but then again if nobody replies to my post I generally don't care about whether or not I forget about it.

I'm in agreement with jb here.  I just want to see new posts as new since I last visited.  That way I'm not wasting time trying to figure out what I have and haven't already read.
