1.) Find any number of the following: old, scratched, unreadable, outdated, replaceable, beat up or just plain ol' bad CDs. Packaging and liners are good, too.

2.) Send me an email through the STC messaging system or at my personal email (pulsephaze [at] gmail [dot] com) and let me know if you are interested in shipping these CDs to me. There is a CD recycling center about 25 minutes from me that I have visited before and will visit again and will gladly bring your CDs up to be recycled as well!

3.) Box or bag up the discs and send them my way. By shipping them to me, I can then disassemble all cases and artwork, organize the components and discs and then hand deliver them to the CD recycling center to save money on postage.

Granted, if you wanted me to recycle any CDs for you I would ask that you handle the postage from you to me - just chalk those few bucks up to helping the environment, cutting down on waste and doing a Good Deed for the day. I won't be checking the forums much in the future, so if you want to grab a hold of me a PM or email is the best way to do so.

THANK YOU and happy recycling!!!

Ashley Winchester Jul 2, 2009 (edited Jul 2, 2009)

Can't you recycle discs another way? Let's see, the coasters in my room consist of...

2 Earthlink discs
2 AOL discs
1 PeoplePC disc

CD's make awesome, awesome coasters. However, after a while, the discs will become kind of sticky, which can be fixed by soaking the discs in a bucket of soapy water for a day. Let's see Martha Stewart beat that tip.

Also, I wonder if it's possible to the government to file a petition against EA for wasting plastic on Madden games. Just make the game a download already! I'm sure you can still pump players for $50 a shot but seeing all those copies of last years/previous years model at game stores is a disgrace.

Shoe Jul 3, 2009 (edited Jul 3, 2009)

No offense, but if I don't like a cd or dvd disc for whatever given reason, i snap it in half and throw it away.

I must continue my personal quest to purge the existence of poorly produced media discs and cartridges from this earth until my dying day...

Copies of the 96-megabit Mortal Kombat Trilogy for N64 are currently the most "in danger" of being destroyed by me these days (MOST WANTED, DEAD OR ALIVE).

..Been thinking of turning this personal vendetta against 'evil' games into a YouTube series, as well.

I have to ask what you have againist MKT outside the obvious things, like Midway reselling the same flipping game for a third time. Additionally, I'll admit the Mortal Kombat 3 engine isn't as great as I thought it was when I was in the 6th grade. Still, I'd consider the N64 version one of the best since you don't have to wait for morphs and fatailities to freakin' load - unless there is something I'm missing/forgetting.

Shoe Jul 3, 2009

The ps1 version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy was the superior version in pretty much every aspect except for the load times.

To its credit though, you could select two (or was it three? god it's been so long) Kombatants to only be able to morph into for the entire fight without having to worry about any loading, if that was preferable to the player(s) using Shang.

And having more than 96 megabits of memory on the cd-rom also meant that they were able to retain the morph animations in the PlayStation version.

The thing that hurt the N64 version the most were the blurry sprites, even when using an S-Video cable.

Nintendo was trying to tout this cart as being 'superior to the arcade version of Ultimate MK3', but after seeing how washed-out the graphics looked when compared to the ps1 edition, it was more than obvious that the good ol' Big N was just trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the youngsters who truly believed that The House That Mario Built could never do them wrong.

"Is the N64 truly worth the wait??  Only if you want The Best!!!"

Ugh..

I haven't played the first print of the ps1 version, only the slightly revised Greatest Hits edition.

There was some kind of glitch in the first run of the game that i read about in egm, although I cant recall what it was.

Anyone else here happen to remember what the glitch was?

Anyway, i don't think either the first print OR the Greatest Hits versions had load times for accessing the Fatalities.

You might be confusing this with the Sega-CD version of Mortal Kombat 1, which actually did have utterly embarassing load-times for the Fatals.

..And don't even get me started on the 32X version of MK2..!!!

Actually, I may be confusing it with the Saturn version. The game came with a Saturn I bought a few months and was told there was loading before fatalities. I haven't checked this out myself though, as the only games I wanted the Saturn for was the Panzer Dragoons. I've played MK3 and it's variants way too much and revisiting them isn't a something I want to do, not with such a vicious IA.

You forgot the horrendously cheap AI -- a hallmark of the MK series which managed to escape itself on just a few home ports. Even on "Very Easy," the AI would manage to brutalize your ass.

Otherwise, agreed. And the PS version of MK Trilogy got all the sound effects and even the lifebar fonts correct and true to the arcade versions of MK3 and UMK3 (no previous versions beyond the PS MK3 had this). The N64 version was much more playable against the AI though. Oh, and forget the Saturn version (eeeyuk!)

I glad to see I'm not the only one that is concerned by stuff like this. I grew up with the SNES version and I HATED how the names where beneath the players lifebars.

Ummm, why?

I always thought it was a good thing.

It made it easier to see how much life you had left when you were getting close to the wire.

Boon and Tobias just did it 'the other way' to simply 'differentiate their game from Street Fighter II', which was pretty lame reasoning if you ask me.

it's a vague, likely unfair allusion to how boring and predictable a series of youtube videos about destroying games would be

Well, to shoe's credit, I think it be pretty amusing if you had some high-powered explosives. Blowing things up is (usually) cool, well, at least that seems to be the consensus on spike TV.

I want to redirect people's attention back to my original post. If you have any CDs to recycle, let me know!

If Nintendo had any decency back in 1993 when MK1 came out for SNES, they would've compromised by allowing Sculptured Software to leave the red blood 'misting' effects (y'know, that red spray that would come out and then evaporate into the air) but censor out the more graphic blood effect (the spinning globs of blood).

I really think that would've been a very fair 'Teen-Rated equivalent' of a compromise between the fans and the ever parent-wary Big N, but they decided to take the more assholic route and have the blood mist colored beige or whatever the fcuk that stuff was.

The fewer copies of that 16-megabit disgrace of ROM chips on this earth, the better.

True, but I think it's safe to say Nintendo learned there lesson with the low sales, look how good Mortal Kombat II turned out on the SNES. The only thing it didn't excel in was speed, which the Genesis version had but lacked in a lot of other areas because of it.

Still, you think with amount of violence in MKII Rare's KI would have had much more brutal fatalities, but most of them where very lame.

I just wanted to let everyone know I am planning on making a trip to the recycling facility on Friday, July 25th, so you still have more time if you want to send me CDs to recycle. I'd recommend getting in contact and sending them off by the 18th so I have ample time to receive them and then break them down for recycling.

Sure Mortal Kombat "Competition Edition" for SNES didn't have the blood and I do remember the controversy and added popularity surrounding the Genesis brethren because it contained buckets-o-blood in every punch. But if you compare to the arcade version, the SNES was much more accurate on all fronts (as it typically was -- well except for MK3+).

I conclude the Genesis version was much more fun (and creepier music because of the Genesis's limited MIDI music) but wasn't without early onsets of poorly programmed AI (ex: only two freeze/spears per round on the CPU, every one after they'd duck or block it).

Out of curiosity, is it unusual for recycling centers to not accept CDs and its compoments? Or is it just the CDs themselves that are not usually accepted? I have several, several CD cases with just booklets that I would like to recycle, but I'm pretty sure they'd have a problem with the cases themselves as I don't think they're labeled with a number.

I'm not sure what's unusual or typical of CD recycling centers, but I do know that the one I utilize recycles all of the components: CDs, cases (including cardboard/digipak) and the booklets/inserts.

By recycling centers, I meant the general ones and not the ones that specialize in CDs.

At any rate, I think I will take you up on your offer as I don't believe my recycling centers will accept them. Do you have some kind of schedule set for making these recycling trips or a future visit set? I have enough CD cases and inserts to fill several large USPS boxes, so I'll probably send you one box every month or so unless you make frequent stops there.

I don't mind doing all the disassembling of the CD cases, either. I wouldn't want you to go through hundreds of those by yourself, anyway.

Green.

Oh, OK. I can't say for sure, but I know that the plastic from jewel cases isn't certifiably recyclable since there's no little symbol and number on them. I'm more comfortable bringing them to a location where I know the materials will be recycled instead of tossing them in the bin and hoping for the best (I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure that non-recyclable materials just get tossed).

That's great - thank you so much! smile I don't have a set schedule, but since it's fairly close I can head up whenever. I do have a pile of stuff to recycle on my own, but what I can do is wait for you to send me your stuff and then I'll just make one trip up there. If you're comfortable with it and don't mind paying the shipping, feel free to send them all in one shipment and I can take them from there. I'll PM you with my personal info!

No, shipping is definitely on me because I'm fairly confident that shipping costs will go above $50  before I even think about shipping you the last box. Besides, it's the least I could do in this situation. And I don't think all of those CD cases will fit in the largest box available at my USPS center as I currently have enough to fill three large (about 30 inches long, 15 inches wide, and 20 inches heigh) plastic bins

Anyway, since you already have a pile of stuff waiting to be recycled, I'll start working on the first box tomorrow (day off) and hopefully I can get the first box or two shipped out to you before the post office closes.

Thanks again.
