Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

allyourbaseare Aug 3, 2009 (edited Aug 5, 2009)

So I was toying around with the idea of starting up a "Game Club" similar to that of a "Book Club" where we all go through a game together and discuss it as we go along.  It'd have to involve an older console, something we all have like the PS2 (of which I can already think of several key titles to go through), Gamecube or maybe even the PS1 or SNES.

Voting would occur when the current game finishes, and each game would get its own thread.  I can keep track of what choices we have by console and would love everyone to offer up their Top 5 to play through.  One thought, let's try to keep them under a 20 hour completion, eh?  It'd be a bit much to ask everyone to play through Final Fantasy XII (where I put in a good 80 hours).

Oh, and let's try to look out for each other!  If someone runs across an extra copy of (for example) Okami, and one of us needs it, pay it forward!

The following people are interested:

As of now (8/5), the following games are up for voting:

Resident Evil 4 (PS2/Gamecube/Wii)
Klonoa 2 (PS2)
The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap (GBA)
Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)
Ico (PS2)
Psychonauts (PS2/Xbox/PC)

Excellent!

Angela Aug 3, 2009

Neat idea.  It does sound a bit like what NeoGAF does, with their "GAF, let's play....." threads.  A cool way to get a collective thought tank going on any given game.

Of the five you've listed, I wouldn't mind going through Klonoa 2 again.  (It's the only one I still currently own.)  Which would be perfect, since I'm fresh off of the first game on the Wii.

And, not to speak out of turn, but might I throw my own game suggestion in the ring at this time?  I nominate The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap for GBA, a title I've been meaning to replay again for the longest.

Wanderer Aug 3, 2009

Okami is definitely not an under-20 hour game. tongue Definitely like the idea, though. However, it's worth noting that there aren't actually that many people here who still play video games. Or at least it doesn't seem like it.

I never played Klonoa 2. Is it worth hunting down a copy?

Ashley Winchester Aug 3, 2009 (edited Aug 3, 2009)

I'd nominate Resident Evil 4, because 1) just bought it and 2) never played it, though I've seen about 50% of it at my neighbor's house. Still, everyone has probably played that to death though most people have access to it.

After that, I'd love to pop Mega Man 2 or Metroid carts into my NES decked out with a new pin set. Seriously, it's very scary - yet cool - to see NES games work on the first shot.

allyourbaseare Aug 3, 2009

Of those mentioned, I'd definitely be up for some Resident Evil 4, Zelda: Minish Cap, or even Metroid.    Never beat RE4 either.

Angela Aug 3, 2009

I'd be up for Resident Evil 4 again as well.  Wii version, natch.

Wanderer Aug 3, 2009

I never beat Resident Evil 4 either. I'm so lame...

Idolores Aug 3, 2009

I dunno, mang. I always thought that the Gaming thread was like the club thing you describe. Someone makes a thread about a new release and everyone it applies to responds . . .

Seems kind of redundant.

Amazingu Aug 3, 2009

I like it!
And a good selection of games too!

I wouldn't mind going with any of the games mentioned so far, although I don't own Ico or Klonoa 2.
I have all the others though.

Silent Hill 2 would get my vote for now.

SonicPanda Aug 3, 2009

Idolores wrote:

I think the differences here are
A, the game needn't necessarily be current,
B, the threads would delve deeper into discussion of the game at hand than merely professing interest or disinterest (this often happens on its own, true, but in this type of system it would be the whole point),
and C, people wouldn't have to feel like they're late to the party alone.

Nice idea, if it pans out it'll likely motivate me to work through my horrendous backlog.

The idea is to nominate 5 to start, right? I'll throw votes toward RE4, Minish Cap, and Ico (three games I own but have yet to play), and toss Psychonauts and maybe Mother 3 (if it's short enough) onto the pile as a means to goose myself into playing more than a little of each.

SonicPanda Aug 3, 2009

Oh, and

Wanderer wrote:

Yes, Klonoa 2 is quite good, though I still prefer the first. If you intend to get all the gems and extra goodies however, it will suck the very marrow from your bones.

SonicPanda wrote:

I just started Psychonauts... that's the only game that's been brought up on here that's actually in my backlog pile, so there's my vote!

Adoru Aug 4, 2009

I also think it's a good idea!

Of the games mentioned, those I have and have not already played/finished are Shadow of the Colossus, Okami and Mother 3 (well I don't really _have_ Mother 3 but hehehe >_> -hey at least I bought the awesome Pork Army Survival Guide big_smile). I'll add these suggestions: Trace Memory, Hotel Dusk and Yakuza (let's create some buzz and change Sega's mind about bringing over Yakuza 3!). I have a huuuuuuge backlog (more than 100 games) but most of them are rpgs...

Would I be trolling if I suggested Lunar Dragon Song on DS? Ow-ow-owww,  I'm kidding!

Shit, yeah! Yakuza, where beating the shit out of a man with his own bike is still fun the 386th time around.

And Dragon Song? I wouldn't go near that game again even if you gussied it up like an underage whore.

Ashley Winchester Aug 4, 2009

Hahahaha. Wow. Can you say "Ow-ow-owww!" when it comes to the intensity of an insult?

Raziel Aug 4, 2009 (edited Aug 4, 2009)

I'd be up for a Resident Evil 4 as well, the PS2 version. Last time I managed to get about 70% game done, but for some unexplainable reason I didn't finish it.

tongue

But, uh, Top 3:

Resident Evil 4 (available on PS2, Wii, PC, GameCube)
Silent Hill 1 (exclusive to PSX I'm afraid, but playable on PS2)
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (available on PC, Dreamcast, PSX)

allyourbaseare Aug 4, 2009

Cool!  So far we have the following people interested:

Allyourbaseare
Angela
Ashley Winchester
Amazingu
SonicPanda
Qui-Gon Joe
Adoru
Raziel

Ideally I'd like at least another 2 people before we start this thing, but 8 is still decent.  So far we have the following games up for vote:

- Resident Evil 4 (PS2/Gamecube/Wii)
- Klonoa 2 (PS2)
- The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap (GBA)
- Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)
- Ico (PS2)
- Psychonauts (PS2/Xbox/PC)

I'm not throwing Mother 3 in the mix because you'd have to actually go download the rom first.  I know a couple of us probably own the cart, but it's not something easily attainable (in English) and thus it goes out (I grabbed that fan guide too! It's sweet!).

If someone doesn't have the game and wants to participate, please PM me.  Odds are I can find it and sell it to you at cost + shipping.

Let's give it until Thursday for people to "sign up" and then we'll start voting on what game to play.  We'll start gaming on Monday.  Unlike a book club, most of these games don't have chapters to arbitrarily stop at.  A set point will have to be established.

Pellasos Aug 4, 2009

i'll be on for:

- The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap (GBA)

stopped playing few years ago, after a few hours, but i'd like to give it another shot.

- Ico (PS2)

ok, but i'm already halfway through. if you dont mind me joining up later.....

Herrkotowski Aug 4, 2009 (edited Aug 4, 2009)

I wouldn't mind joining, however, I only own Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, and Resident Evil 4 at the moment. I also don't get to play games as often as before. Is there any time limit for each game? How does that work because I'm interested, but I don't want to hinder the progress of the rest of the group?

Bernhardt Aug 4, 2009 (edited Aug 4, 2009)

I've already played through Klonoa 2, Psychonauts, and Shadow of the Colossus; I won't be able to play them simultaneously as you are, but I can still comment.

Ico, I could never get through by myself, and GameFAQs were completely unknown to me back then, so I've since lanced it from my collection.

Okami is about the only one you've listed I haven't played yet.

That, and Resident Evil 4 (Wii); can't seem to find a copy of it anywhere, anymore, though.

Bernhardt wrote:

Both of them are quite easily attainable on Goozex.  I've championed this site before and I'll do it again and again.  It's a great game-trading website that maintains the value of your old games.  In preparation for this club, I put RE4 (Wii) on my request list and I've already been matched up with someone.

*edit*  Also, don't forget that anyone can nominate their own games!  I just picked a few that I thought were more "important" than the standard fare (yes, Klonoa 2 is important).  We could all go through and play the original God of War if someone wanted.

Wanderer Aug 4, 2009

I'm in as well.

rein Aug 4, 2009

I like the idea.  I would want the pace to be leisurely, though.  My first choice is Shadow of the Colossus, but I wouldn't mind playing Silent Hill 2 again.

TerraEpon Aug 4, 2009

Interesting idea. Not sure how much I'd participate though....Minish Cap is the only one I own (and Klonoa 2 probably the only other I'd even even were to I try)

Ashley Winchester Aug 4, 2009

allyourbaseare wrote:

Actually need to play this as well. My neighbor's copy didn't like my PS2 however; though to be fair a lot of games don't like my PS2 (I'm looking at you Wild Arms and Wild Arms Alter Code:F)

Raziel Aug 5, 2009

Do we have a consensus on Resident Evil 4?

allyourbaseare Aug 5, 2009

I updated the first post and will be doing that from now on.

So it seems we've got a good 12 people interested!  Awesome!  Adam, could I get your help in creating a poll for the first game?  The games listed in the first post are the ones we'll vote on.  We might as well start the poll today and end it on Friday, that way people can scrounge up a copy of the game over the weekend.

I'd like us all to start on Monday, while working your way towards a certain goal for the following Monday.  It should be a 4-6 hour block of gaming, where we can all finish it at less than an hour a day.

Once the game is decided, I'll make a new thread where we can all discuss the game.  Please keep spoilers to a minimum and use WHITE TEXT when appropriate<color=white></color> (replace the <> with []).

Herrkotowski Aug 5, 2009

Sounds good. I won't always be able to participate (due to lack of interest/ownership in some games), but I will be there when there is a game I do own appears.

Pellasos Aug 5, 2009

let me recommend a few more games for the next time:

Ys: The Ark of Napishtim (PS2,PSP,PC)
Breath of Fire : Dragon Quarter (PS2)

last one is an JRPG of course, but pretty short.

Short ah so damn good game, heck, so good that if it gets picked, I might even join. (actually, depending how schedule is planned for next week, I might be able to participate next week already if Zelda or Psychonauts doesn't win.)

Also few more games where I can participate with ease:
Killer 7 (GC/PS2)
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (PS/PC)
Mafia (PC, great game, but I'm probably the only one who owns this big_smile~ )

Then of course the regular series, which probably have been talked a lot already:
Silent Hill-series
Metal Gear Solid-series

Also, I wonder if Suikoden I + II are bit too long for this, though first Suikoden is somewhat short, my first (and so far only playthrough [what a fan I am]) was around 13 hours. Probably same with Vagrant Story.

Wanderer Aug 5, 2009

It's so cool we have so many participants! I think this is going to be a blast...

Amazingu Aug 5, 2009

Pellasos wrote:

Not to mention unforgivingly ball-bustingly hard.
There's no way I'm EVER going to go through that again.
Although I do believe I still have a clear file somewhere...

Anyhoo, I'm really looking forward to this getting off the ground!

I don't have enough free time to participate, but I highly recommend Ys VI.  BOF5 would be more apporpriate if you were starting a masochism club.

Pellasos Aug 6, 2009

i don't think BoFV is too hard, especially if you've been through it once.

count me in for masochism clubs though!

And even if you've playing it for the first time, just start thinking on the battles from the first one and if something seems tough, run. It gets a lot easier in the middle parts, except for few bosses which can be easily killed by using some D-Ratio.

There should be more rpgs like BoF V, where every member really does count on the battles and you really need to learn to use their skills to be able to sail easily through the waves of monsters.

Also, one reason enough to play BoF V is just the ending video and hearing Chihiro Onitsuka's Castleļ½„Imitation. And I don't even have to mention Sakimoto's brilliant score, but I do it anyways !
