I know we shouldn't jump to conclusions... but will someone please slap this girl!

What the hell was she expecting? "Oh, you have a C average GPA from a university I had never heard of before, yeah of course you're going to get the best job in the world as soon as you graduate! Never mind that it takes 6-9 months for most graduates to find jobs... you're special...NOT"!

Ashley Winchester Aug 3, 2009

uh, ok... never mind the economy making it hard for just about anyone looking for a job.

My school never found me a job and I never sued; actually, the only thing that bothered me about my school's idea of placement was the fact any kind of employment was counted towards their total placement numbers, just not those in the field (the important thing they left out) - even if they had no hand in getting you the job. So when I got a call four months later asking where I was working and was asked if they could use for their totals I said no. I wasn't going to add to yet another misleading statistic.

Long story short, all schools suck in their own way. No reason to make a federal case out of it. Hell, the school I went to shut down and looking back it's not hard to see why.

Idolores Aug 3, 2009 (edited Aug 3, 2009)

This is where everyone reading it should collectively facepalm until their palms bleed. What a whiny c--t.

Does she seriously expect a f---ing school to call every potential employer for every student to make a case for them? This girl's marks aren't even that spectacular.

Ashley Winchester Aug 3, 2009 (edited Aug 3, 2009)

Actually, this is about as bad as the stupid girl that fell down a open manhole because she was texting. Of course, she had to fall down it the very moment the construction crew was getting cones to mark it off, so that loophole makes it ok to distract yourself to the point of absurdity.

Edit:

Maybe next time it won't be a manhole, maybe it'll be a bus (think Final Destination here - WHAM! Out of nowhere - which I'm watching this moment)

No, that's only stupid if she tries to blame it on someone else and tries to sue or something. Otherwise, it's hilarity that is naturally occurring.

Yeah, that's one of my favorite moments in that movie, cos it happens so suddenly.

More moviemakers should learn to do things suddenly instead of announcing them with a rise in dramatic music.

Oh, but I didn't mention the best part - her parents are suing the city!

I'm not sure it's the texter's fault she fell. To be honest, I don't keep my eyes peeled to the ground everywhere I go. I've walked and looked around, I simply don't expect to walk right into a big hole. So, in this case, I think she might have a valid point.

As for the student... no points for you! Final grade: F

f--- that. I've never seen a manhole on the sidewalk. Every time I've seen them, they're in the middle of the street, where your eyes should be open and you should be alert, anyways.

And even if she wasn't, do you have to f---ing sue someone for that? Assuming she wasn't hurt, she can't just laugh it off and walk away?

I don't believe she was hurt, although she might have thrashed her precious shoes - and ego. Aww. Still, I'd have to say the funniest thing about the story was the picture of the manhole cover itself - kinda sad when it has "Made in China" embossed on it. We have to outsource the manufacture of manhole covers as well?

Well, even if the manhole was on the street, which it most likely was, so what? People often have to walk on the street to avoid cars that pull right in front of you, bicyclers, and hordes of people...
I think in this case, it really wasn't her fault at all. Also, I don't know how much they're suing for. Perhaps it's only for medical bills? Even just getting an MRI is thousands of dollars...

Now, if they're suing for millions of dollars and she wasn't hurt, then yeah, they're just trying to take advantage of the situation. But at the same time, what if some little kid was running around and had fallen in and died? Maybe she got "lucky" in not getting seriously hurt, does that mean we should just let it go?

Anyway, I think someone really screwed up, and it wasn't her. At the same time I don't think they should sue for millions, but I'd like to hear the whole story before jumping to conclusions in this case.

While I do agree with you that two wrongs don't make a right, I honestly doubt a few road cones would have stopped such a distracted person - this, of course, depending on how distracted she was, and I'm obviously swaying in the direction of totally. As for a child falling in a manhole, that's a lot less likely IMO, I would hope most adults would be holding their children's hand in the streets, especially in a busy city and be on top of any and all threats in their surroundings - something older children and adults sometimes phase out on.

Still, when it comes to people nowadays, that's all I can do - hope, unless I make up a safety mascot like "look down and look for manholes" Mole!

Leave the little mole in his hole.

raynebc Aug 8, 2009

She could just as easily have been hit by a car (maybe by a driver who was texting) by not paying attention and walking around in the street.  It's her fault for not watching where she's going, because if she was paying attention, it would have been impossible to miss a big hole in the ground.

I think its easy for us to blame her, without knowing all the details.
By the way, I think having big orange cones in front of the hole would have stopped her from falling in. Also, if someone is texting and they cross the street, is it their fault if they get hit? A lot of people are inclined to say yes, but the truth is drivers are always expected to be looking for pedestrians. Just because someone is not crossing in the crosswalk does not mean they're frogger! In fact, unless they jump right in front of a car, if a driver has time to stop for a pedestrian and does not, then it is his/her fault. That's the law. To be honest, I rather hate drivers. I am one myself, so I know both sides of the story, and for the most part I'm a pedestrian. People around here (New England) have no respect for pedestrians! Even if you're at a crosswalk, most assholes don't bother stopping because Heaven forbid they would have to lose 10-15 seconds from their journey... and frankly the worst, seems to be middle-aged women. I don't know what it is, but they NEVER seem to stop for anyone! I hate to stereotype, but they're always driving some SUV!! Do other people have the same experiences? or are most people around here drivers? yes, I think I got carried away a little in this post smile
but frankly, I think it's ridiculous that people are 1)blaming her, and 2)people think texters are at fault for getting run over.

I do agree, texters *should* pay attention to what they're doing, but as a pedestrian I am well aware that most drivers are assholes and it's almost always their fault for hitting someone.

I've seen some pretty f---ing dumb pedestrians. Having the right of way doesn't mean you're always right . . .

And sure, drivers can be assholes, but let's be reasonable about the generalizations, huh?

Maybe being in New England has soured my overall opinion of drivers...
well, people are definitely more courteous in the Midwest, but then again in most folks in the Midwest drive everywhere, so there are overall few pedestrians. You're right, perhaps saying "most drivers are assholes" is incorrect. "most" should probably be replaced with "a good percentage of" smile
Yes, pedestrians can be stupid, but if you're behind the wheel, it's up to you to be careful and vigilant. Also, I'm curious what stupid things you've seen pedestrians do?

cheers,

You know, I'm pretty hypocritical when it comes to drivers vs. pedestrians.

When in my car I'm like: "Hurry up and get the f--- out of my way"

but when I'm walking I'm like "If you hit me I'm f------ suing you!"

Still, I remember when I was in Pittsburgh and experienced several instances with aggressive drivers. Once a guy literally scooted his car under my ass, so I sat on his hood a few seconds to piss him off and then one time I was at a cross walk between the two Melon buildings downtown that even had a pedestrian sign where one guy stopped to let me go but the guy behind him went around him and almost clocked me, so I dropped all my stuff on the road and proceeded to flip him off.

Bernhardt Aug 9, 2009

People shouldn't leave manholes open without at least partitioning them off, setting out some orange construction cones, whatever...what if it's the middle of the night? The whole street looks black.

The are other reasons you could fall down an open manhole, besides not paying attention.

raynebc Aug 9, 2009

No matter what the reason, people shouldn't be wandering in the road unless they're fully prepared to watch out for themselves.  This girl obviously wasn't and should have stuck to the side of the road.

I know this is off topic, but from the trailer from the new Final Destination movie (what's up with screwing with the words "the" and "and" to signify sequels? Remove the two "the's" from "The Fast and the Furious" to get the fourth movie "Fast and Furious" - wow, brilliant!) "The + Final Destination" this happens again.

Still, the reason I'm posting is I've watched the first one a few times and just found the second one in a $5 bin and I just have to say - the actress that plays Sam is NOWHERE as attractive as I remember. Really, I'm damn glad my taste in looks has improved since I last saw these because she's so fugly.
