So, it looks like Sony has taken the opportunity at their GamesCom conference to finally unveil the PS3 Slim:

Thoughts?  PS2 backward compatibility is still MIA, but $300 for a new slim-line model, a solid Blu-ray player, and a 120GB HDD makes for an attractive price-point.  More attractive than most of the previous models before it, at any rate.

Any potential late system adopters taking the plunge this year?

Late adopter yes, but likely there will still be 1 more revision model before I get around to finally buying one, heh.

I'd want to upgrade my TV first, and yes I've managed to live without HDTV for all these years...

I'm a late adopter but opted to buy one of the earlier gen models that has PS2 compatibility.  Got it for $250 so I'm not complaining, nor do I really need more hard drive space than I have on my current unit.  The slim looks nice enough at least.

Backwards compatibility was the only feature I was hoping this thing would have (don't care about size or whatever... just want to buy a new console that will still play my PS2 games... and upscale them!), so my interest is nonexistent.

The slim looks nice, but I'll stick with my first gen 60gig PS3 with the hardware PS2 backwards compatibility.  Frick I still have my first gen PS2 bought on launch day and that still works too.  lol  But I probably won't pick up a PSPgo (However, I don't think there will be a Canadian PSP bundle for Dissidia so I may have to eBay to get it - however, it all depends on how badly I just want a Mystic Silver edition PSP... I suppose i could just go with black, because I don't think I really want to pay extra for a UMD version of FFVII Advent Children...  and now I'm just rambling...)

If it had had PS2 backwards compatibility, I would have SERIOUSLY considered getting this, but as it is, I'm sticking with my 40 gig old model.
Maybe I'll upgrade my harddisk or something...

Moot at the moment, as I've had a trusty 60GB model at my side for a little over a year now, and since any ol' laptop drive will work, extra storage isn't an issue either. What I do find interesting is the discontinuation of all other models. Sony better hope their revisions for the Slim don't compromise the system's stability or those years spent laughing over RRODs are going to bite them in a big way.

Looks nice enough to me.  As long as my 80GB unit keeps working, I don't need one, but I'd definitely get it if I didn't already have a PS3.  Couldn't care less that it doesn't have backwards compatibility.

So, I guess we should expect a price-drop for the Xbox as well?
Of course, it depends on which chips are installed in the Xbox (like Zephyr or whatever?), and they keep upgrading... so choosing an Xbox seems kinda like a headache. Anyway, I have no money at the moment, so it's a moot point.
