I remember when I was back in the states for Christmas I saw some really ideal shelving units for DVDs and CDs with glass doors at Tower Records in Chicago. That's the sort of thing that I'll be using eventually to store my stuff (the extra cost for nice shelves that keep dust out is so totally worth it). For the time being, most of my stuff is in boxes at my parents house, while the stuff I've purchased in Japan since Christmas being on a small CD shelf that I bought while here. I'm rather looking forward to settling down somewhere for good and being able to set up all my stuff as I want it. Let us know what you eventually do with your CDs!
I just use shelves, which are big enough to accommodate the slightly larger jewel cases that the Japanese sometimes use. I was looking for quite some time and was even considering some that I'd seen in mail-order magainzes, but eventually I went with one that I found in office Max (or Office Depot, can't remember which one it is) and one that I found in a local Japanese store.
Heh, in fact, I still have posted the pic I took of my CD collection when I first set up my shelves:

Of course, the drawback of those second set of shelves is that they sag in the middle from all the weight...
A family friend owns an unfinished wood furniture business, and my CDs are in one of the wide model CD racks that he sells. The racks I've seen in other stores seem to be less durable and/or plastic and/or cheesy, so I can say the CD shelf I have now is the best I've seen. It's super durable (4+ years and still in great shape), sturdy, and has survived a half dozen moves to and from college and apartments.

The one I own is the one in the bottom left hand of the pic (220 CDs). What's killer about it is that the top shelf is roomier than the bottom two, so the larger CD cases, random big boxsets, irregular packaging, etc., all go on the top, arranged by height. The rest is sleeved and alphabetized accordingly. That's just how I roll.
I have three of the old reconfigurable Atlantic CD shelf things that hold about 350 normal jewel cases (150 or so DVD cases) a piece. There's enough space between each shelf for the larger jewel cases and box sets, but I need about two more of them to hold all of my CDs and PSX/PS2/DC games, so the newer half of my collection is piled up in assorted boxes.
I forgot to mention I have a larger DVD rack from the same place for my PS2/GCN/DVD and book collection.
All of mine are in two IKEA Billy bookcases, along with DVDs and my Duo, DC, Saturn, and Gamecube games.
I used to have a couple Sauder CD shelves that worked out great, but I had to get rid of them two moves ago.
I live in the smallest room of a small house, so I can't afford to shelve my albums like a normal person. So for now, they've all been ripped to MP3, and the albums themselves are in boxes, more or less grouped by series. I have a list of which albums in in which box so if I never need to retrieve them, I don't have to dig through all 14 boxes to find them.
Eventually they'll be placed on bookshelves along with all of my movies and games, again grouped by series.

The inpregnable fortress known to many as my drawer.
Forgot the brand, but it's a set of adjustable shelves I bought from Best Buy and put together. It looks flimsy as hell until you install the back bars for stability and then you can literally throw the set across the room and it'll stay together. They were cheap ($50 for a set), but they've held out for six years now without coming close to breaking/falling and were invaluable enough through college that it was a no-brainer to stick with them. They top out at 700 CD's (not counting double-cases, which I have a lot of), so I keep a couple handfuls of CD's out in my desk's hutch (mostly oddly-shaped ones, like Falcom Special Box 93 and the Rockman X Box Set and the awkward double CD cases) and another handful in a Case Logic bag.
Of course, I always have a bunch stacked up on my desk anyway, so I guess that would count for storage as well...
Oooh! I love that! I really like the rest of their shelves, too. Some are nice and slim, while others are wider. I like the varied selection they have. Those are exactly the type I had been looking for. Are those shelves adjustible? That's what I like about my taller tower. Man, I would have made my own shelves if I had any woodworking experience.
