There's an upcoming Pony Canyon release titled Famitrance EX that will feature trance covers of game themes, and I've been working on romanizing the track list and identifying which games the songs come from. Here's what I have so far:

01. Eight Melodies (from Mother) / MK feat. cherry
02. Love Song Sagashite (from Dragon Quest II) / MK feat. Latte
03. Melodies of Life (from Final Fantasy IX) / B.U.S. feat. lyon
04. Suteki da ne (from Final Fantasy X) / MK feat. Yah
05. Chrono Cross ~Toki no Kizuato~ (from Chrono Cross) / Starving Trancer
06. Geki! Teikoku Kagekidan (from Sakura Wars) / Dizzi Mystica feat. mi-mi
07. Hanasaku Otome (from Sakura Wars) / Acid=Stone Valley feat. mi-mi
08. Pollyanna (I Believe in You) (from Mother) / Dizzi Mystica feat. cherry
09. Eyes on Me (from Final Fantasy VIII) / Hommarju feat. Maki
10. Hikari (from Kingdom Hearts) / Starving Trancer feat. R. Cena
11. Zanarkand nite (from Final Fantasy X) / Icon
12. Gensei Mugen / N.O.-SYO
13. Ai no Uta (from Pikmin) / Maki
14. Full Metal Jacket (I Wanna Be Your Drill Instructor) / Hommarju
15. Korobushka (from Tetris) / Ryu*
16. The Goonies 'R' Good Enough (from The Goonies) / Starving Trancer
17. Ending no Theme / Acid=Stone Valley
18. Shao Pai Long (from Choujikuu Yousai Macross) / Starving Trancer feat. Yah
19. Overture ~Nobunaga no Yabou~ (from Nobunaga's Ambition) / B.U.S.
20. Kuon ~Hikari to Nami Kioku~ (from Final Fantasy X-2) / MK

I think "Gensei Mugen" is from Nobunaga's Ambition, but for the life of me I can't figure out which game had "I Wanna Be Your Drill Instructor." Was there some obscure Famicom game based on Full Metal Jacket?

Though I'm afraid I can't help out on the unknowns (I can't help but think of Full Metal Alchemist whenever I see Full Metal Jacket), I'm definitely amped for the CD.  If it turns out well, let's hope it'll be the first of a few in the series.

But go figure: It took them this long to adapt Lauper's "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" -- and it's considered a cover from the game version and not the film's original.

it took who long enough? Konami had it in a Pop'n Music game, I'm pretty sure.

based on that Macross song, I'm assuming not every single track is from a video game. if that's the case, it would make sense for "Full Metal Jacket" (which sometimes has "I Wanna Be Your Drill Instructor" appended to it) to be on there. Kind of.

Nah, there was a NES adaption of Macross, and the song listed there was the only BGM in the game. Kind of like that little known Transformers NES title.

A google search for "Full Metal Jacket NES" brings up a youtube clip of someone's half-ass attempt at making an 8-Bit FMJ game, but it's clearly not legit. Couldn't find anything else. hmm

Some rooting online found an obscure Konami game called Combat School (Boot Camp in the US) that worked in the FMJ in the C64 port, anyway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HPv5xwNxsQ

I was talking more about the dance/trance labels.

I'm wondering whether they'll be including the vocals or not.  I'm going to hazard a guess and say no.  That there's no "feat." following the artist's name strongly indicates there won't be, but also for the fact that it's being adapted from the game may be another factor.

There are a few samples up: http://9819.jp/cd/exit_tunes/qwce00133.html

Sounds far more interesting than some of the other recent VGM dance albums, but I'm probably biased since I'm already familiar with these artists. I really wish they had put up samples of the FF vocal themes, as those are what I'm interested in most.

After hearing it, I'm now assuming that "Full Metal Jacket/I Wanna Be Your Drill Instructor" was included because it was used in Famicom Wars commercials. Also, "Ending Theme" appears to be from Mother 2 and will include "Good Friends, Bad Friends" as well as "Smiles and Tears."

Decided against starting a whole new thread about this and just hijacked an existing one. Does anyone know what this delicious bit of 8-bit glory is an arrangement of?

Good news! I posted a request on the BBS of the hack creator's site and this is his response:

The BGM comes from the underworld of "Doraemon Giga Zombie no Gyakusyuu"
which is a (J)RPG in 1990 and comes from Japanese animation .

Unfortunately , it's not well-known video game ,
so I can't find play through or original sound on YouTube .
But I found the remix of same BGM:

There you go! It's always nice to get a direct answer from the source.
Incidentally, this same game was actually fan-translated a while back.

I don't want to derail the thread, but it seems as if there's thousands of Mega Man hacks and fan-based projects out there, but outside of the 8-bit remake of MM7 I haven't played any of them.

Can anyone recommend me some good ones?

Hot damn, man. You really went above and beyond there. Thanks very much!

Minus Infinity is a very ambitoius and accessible one. There's some crazy stuff going on in most of the stages, especially Pharoahman's stage.

There's also an absolutely bonkers MM5 hack that adds gravity games to every RM stage. The castle stages are sadly unchanged, though. Another popular MM5 one is Wily's Dream Space.

Megaman 3 Return has some good ideas, too, but some of the elements are downright mean.

I'll stop there before I further derail the thread into MM madness. Again.

These all had some creative ideas, but holy f--- that was amazing.
