Halloween's kind of bittersweet in the retail business as the last thing protecting you from the Holiday Season is gone, but the day itself is pretty fun. I just recently started Dead Space so I'll probably play a bit of that to fill my spook quotient. What're you guys up to?

Raziel Oct 31, 2009

I've been watching horror movies. Rewatched The Thing and Dawn of the Dead already, currently watching Day of the Dead. Up next are Christine and Shivers. I'll end the day with a hour or two with Silent Hill or Hellnight for PS1. tongue

Says who?  My local Target already has Christmas-related goods just one aisle over from the All Hallows' Eve stuff.  It was surreal hearing the store-front animatronic witch cackling over a musical greeting card ringing out Jingle Bells.

I'll be back later from work to hand out candy to the kiddies -- that is, if my cousins and I don't gobble 'em all down first.  Watching "Garfield's Halloween Adventure" and "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" are requisites, and then I'm going to try my luck at baking both Pumpkin Pecan Pie Tartlets and a Pumpkin Cheesecake.  I'm hoping they'll turn out looking something this and this respectively.

Those look AMAZING.  If they turn out well, might you be willing to share recipes?  big_smile

Hellnight

I'm so glad someone else knows about this gem. Without a doubt one of the better horror-games, should have a lot more fans than it does (but it was only released in Japan and Europe, IIRC?).

As for Halloween? I think I'll listen to some dark ambient music, take a stroll through the nearby cemetery, watch a horror movie or two, and think about the fact that we all will die some day. In other words, it'll be mostly like any other day. tongue

the nicest part about living in a condo with a keypad entrance in the lobby is you dont get bugged by kids on halloween. in fact, the if i added up all the trick or treaters we got since we moved here 3 years ago, i can count them all on one thalidomide baby...

Started watching Creepshow last night, got to the 3'rd story (The Crate) and decided it was time for bed...The fiancee didn't find any of the stories scary - and was laughing at most of it...I guess it was a bit of a horror / comedy.

On TV today, Halloween 4 and 5 were playing back to back on AMC 'HD'.  I don't know why they say it's HD, they look like terrible encodes from what I could tell.  Really bad Halloweens of course...

About to head to the store to get some Candy just in case.  I'm back in an apartment this year, and no kids around here, but you never know.

I was able to find Castlevania Rebirth (japanese)...so in the halloween spirit, I will be playing that tonight, for sure!

Anyway, have fun everyone.  Cheers and all that stuff.

Raziel, what's this Hellnight you and Daniel K are on about? Damn exclusives. Damn Silent Hill 1 being so hard to find, damn me for lending out my PS2 to my buddy (No Silent Hill 2 or Fatal Frame!). Damn it all to hell.

Oh, well. Dead Space is begging me to finish it.

Hrmm, looking through my collection of OST's, I have Baroque, Deep Fear,  Demento (thanks again, Miker!) Eternal Darkness, Ten Years of Resident Evil, and Biohazard 2 (tip of the hat to my boy Ashley Winchester, who seems to be absent lately, unless I'm blind while perusing the forums) I could spin . . .

Is it just Calgary, or is Halloween becoming more lackluster every year? As a kid, I'd see all these awesome home-made halloween costumes, now it's like the kids (and/or their parents) aren't even trying. Make this a night to remember, guys! The few adults that I've seen today have some great costumes. I saw this  smokin' girl dressed as Alice from Alice in Wonderland, some dude dressed as Jack Sparrow, another as Bob the Builder, and another woman dressed as Cindy Lou Who (who couldn't have been no more than two).

Last year, I took the lazy way out and bought a pure white bedsheet (harder to find than you'd think!), cut out two large holes, sewed some black felt behind them so they just looked like vacant holes, and went as a Charlie Brown-esque ghost. It was well received at the party, if only because I perpetuated a classic Halloween stereotype. smile

Whatever you all do, please be safe, okay? Have a good All Hallow's Eve!

Hellnight is a first-person horror game for the PS1 by Atlus (!). "Hellnight" is the European title, it was called "Dark Messiah" in Japan, and it wasn't released in North America.

The basic premise of the game is that you and this girl you meet in the subway are chased down into the Tokyo sewer system by a monster. The further in you get in the game, the deeper you go. The monster is always lurking around somewhere in the dungeon, and you can't fight it, only avoid it/flee from it (basically, if it catches you, you're dead). The story is a little corny sometimes, but the atmosphere and special style of the game more than make up for it. Its definitely among the absolute best horror games on the PS1 (one of the few good ones, actually), and it stacks up pretty well compared to newer ones as well.

Here's a YouTube-clip of the first few minutes of gameplay. The game is a bit slow in the beginning (the first area is not too interesting, its only to let you get a feel for the game), but the video might give you an idea of what its like:

Wow, that game looks cool! I might import it if it's not disgustingly rare. Also looking at Echo Night: Beyond, I swear there was a PS1 game called that or something similar that took place on a haunted ship or something, but the entry on wikipedia only mentions a PS2 title

They didn't turn out half bad.  The presentation wasn't quite there, but they turned out delicious all the same.  Here are the recipes I used:

For the Pumpkin Pecan Pie base filling.  And the Tartlets crust.

Pumpkin Cheesecake.

Living in an apartment complex, I haven't been able to enjoy Halloween for 10 years now. Sad. sad

Today was a little different. As I was in the market for a new suit, I was at a big mall and kids were all over the place, in costume with their little candy bags out and ready. It was kinda cute. wink

I've never heard of that Hellnight game. I must track that down. Last night, I put on Silent Hill once more and had the same reaction as always. I started thinking, what an amazing intro... oh, that animation is really nasty, I don't remember it looking that bad... that cutoff point in the distance is really obvious... now it's gone dark, oh okay now it looks much better... that's creepy... oh dear lord those things are after me, stay away! Stay away!

Once that game goes dark, it gets me all over again.

Happy belated Halloween all! Hope you had a good one.

My Halloween was going plenty well until my ex started sending me psycho text messages.  Is there some rule that says the hotter a girl is the more batshit crazy she has to be?  Geez.

SonicPanda Nov 2, 2009

It turns out I was lying. I spent my post-work Halloween taking in Monsters vs Aliens at my sister's request (she'd had a very bad day, getting an abscess and not being able to take ibuprofen because she's pregnant once again - that's a post in itself). Not bad, if a little thin on story. It didn't come across as smug as some of DW's other output, thankfully, making it a far sight better than Shrek 3 or Shark Tale.
No candy to eat though, Treaters cleaned us out. I'm sure in a few weeks I'll convince myself it's for the best.

Lord, do I ever hear that.

Hope you all had a nice halloween everyone and it went well. I ended up as a zombie, for something here in London, for most of the day.  tongue
