I've got a problem, hoping someone here can offer advice. Citizens, gamers, fellow STCers, I turn to you, my friends!

I want to convert a few spc soundtracks to mp3s. I remember that many years ago, I could straight-up convert the spcs to mp3s using Winamp's audio output function. However, when I rummage around through all the menus and options in Winamp now, I just can't find it, I can just convert the audio output straight to raw wavs. Which would have been great if I wanted to burn an audio CD, but I just want them as mp3s. This brings me to my next problem: anyone know of a good wav->mp3 converter? I've tried googling for one and found an assload of them, but not a single one seems to be freeware, they usually have some bullshit on their sites about "FREE!!!", but when you download and install them you find out that they require registration to be used anyway.

So, anyone know how to convert the audio output in Winamp to mp3-files, or alternatively, anyone know of a free (for real) application that can convert the wavs to mp3s in a handy and speedy manner? Any one of the two solutions would be fine, really.

...Dammit, I could've sworn that you could turn the audio output straight to mp3s, I remember doing it myself! The only difference I can think of is that I used Winamp 2 back then while I'm using Winamp 5 now. But they wouldn't be so retarded as to remove such a great function, would they...? ...Would they?

LAME is the software for encoding to MP3.

i remember years ago victor from RPGclassics sent me a ton of SNES SPCs,, then when i upgraded my puter, my winamp wouldnt play them anymore.. man that was a bummer sad

Froggy, he's already using Winamp not AO - presumably, he isn't a Mac user.

DK, if you've got Exact Audio Copy set up with LAME already, you can use it as a frontend for LAME to encode WAVs to MP3. Foobar will also convert to MP3 if you have LAME installed (not sure, but I don't think foobar comes with an encoder). I've never tried converting from SPC to MP3 without writing to WAV first, but that may be possible as well.

I read the post a little too quick. As much as I liked Winamp (especially the custom skins) when I used a PC machine I think that overall the support in Audio Overload is too great to pass over.

Support for over 30 formats of different consoles out of the box is too nice and imo much better than searching for the plugin for Winamp. That being said there is a Windows version there both 32 and 64 bit. smile

Yes yes LAMElib is the library for the MP3 encoding. This can be added to Audacity and even better yet you can make some nice fade outs for all your songs too.

Foobar would be the best choice (in my opinion) to convert SPC's to MP3's, just download it + newest recommend LAME (zorbfish gave the link already), and then just show Foobar where lame.exe resides, use whatever command line you want and then just convert.

And this again reminds me that I should do somekind of page for proper EAC settings + how to do stuff in Foobar. Especially that convert stuff, which is nice with SPC's and other emulated formats.

Also, sorry for shitty instructions, never have been my strong point, but hopefully you Daniel are tech-savvy enough to conquer the obstacles ahead.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I decided to try foobar. I like it a lot, but there's one problem: the component that plays spcs plays them in 32 KHz, which doesn't sound as good as 44 or 48. I tried to find configuration options for the playback rate, but no luck so far.

I think I'll try Smeg's suggestion with EAC. I didn't know that it converted files, I've just used it for CD ripping.

Just go to the SNES-music archive I linked to in my first post and download and install SNESAmp. Its a plugin for Winamp that plays spcs. Easy, takes maybe half a minute, and great sound.

EDIT: SNESAmp. "SNESamp v3.3.4" is the file you should get.
