Thoughts based on the title and teaser page alone:

1) Hironobu Sakaguchi makes a game called "Final Fantasy," it becomes wildly popular and generates many a sequel. Sakaguchi quits Square, starts his own company, and makes a title that essentially has the same meaning. Final = Last. Fantasy = Story. Ridiculous! tongue

2) Is that Uematsu music on the teaser page? Because if it is, I'm impressed.

Sounds like Uematsu.

Nice music, but that piece of art they have there is more to my liking. The art style as well as they font they used remind me fondly of Vagrant Story.

Qui-Gon Joe Jan 29, 2010

Yeah, I really like the artwork behind the logo.  Looks very familiar... do we have any idea who's doing the designs for this?

Regardless, I'm pretty excited.  I liked Blue Dragon a whole heck of a lot more than most people seemed to, and looooooved Lost Odyssey, so it'll be interesting to see where they go next.  Any Nintendo-published game these days scares me, though, since Nintendo of America has decided that pretty much nothing but Mario needs to be localized, ever.  I liked them better when they were the underdog and actively had to try.  sad

Funny, that's the first thing I thought of too.  Perhaps it's The Last (Vagrant) Story?  Probably not, but hey, a man can dream can't he?

Anyway, not sure about the composer, most likely Uematsu though, that piece reminded me of Suteki da ne upon first listen.  I think the artist is gonna end up being Shinichi Kameoka.  Check it.  He was the character designer on the Mana series and art director on the first SaGa Frontier.  He's currently president of a company called Brownie Brown who just so happened to co-develop Blue Dragon Plus alongside Mistwalker for the Nintendo DS.  Nerd detective work ftw. smile

If nothing else, Last Story has an impressive and well-established pedigree. Nintendo, even with their stunning track record of turning down interesting IP's lately, would be stupid to deny at least a good look at this title, although I freely admit that is as much speculation as it is wishful thinking.

Bernhardt Jan 29, 2010

I dunno, Arc Rise Fantasia's already set for a U.S. release, and that's a pretty generic RPG, as I understand it. If that's making it over to the U.S., I don't understand why Last Story wouldn't be.

I should think Nintendo would consider it an opportunity to redevelop their image as a platform for the serious gamer, instead of allowing themselves to be degenerated to the generic family home entertainment box that they are now.

I would like to agree with you, but Arc Rise Fantasia is a 3rd party game - Nintendo is notoriously stingy with allowing anyone but themselves to localize their own stuff.  They also don't seem to need a very good reason not to localize these days.  Fatal Frame 4 being part of an established franchise didn't help it.  Disaster being DESIGNED FOR THE U.S. MARKET originally and then ALREADY IN ENGLISH for Europe didn't help it.  Another Code R being a sequel to a game that came out in the U.S. and sold okay (though not amazing) numbers isn't helping it.  I could EASILY see us getting screwed out of one or both of The Last Story/Xenoblade.

Ramza Jan 29, 2010

Qui-Gon,

I'm currently playing Glory of Heracles on Nintendo DS, localized by Nintendo (developed by Paon, the remnants of Data East).

And it's a very, very good localization. And they bothered to bring it here. So...yeah.

Holy cow!  The creator of Final Fantasy doing an actual Wii game?!?!  Well I never thought I'd live to see this day!

I don't know if we'll get this title over here, but I'm glad to see that Sakaguchi-san and Nintendo have sorta made up after all the turmoil that happened in the N64 days.

Sami Jan 30, 2010

So this is what Mistwalker have been doing for the past 2 years after Lost Odyssey. It's apparently pretty far along already, I think an official unveiling at E3 and US release by the end of the year is very likely. It's annoying they don't have a trailer already...

FuryofFrog Jan 30, 2010

Its late so I'm not sticking much in this post. The song on the teaser page sound suspiciously similar to Suteki Da Ne dontcha think? Just a thought at least.....

Okay, so here's the bit from the, ahem, other thread:

Damn, does that music sound fantastic. Any ideas on who the composer might be? It gives a Chrono Trigger-ish Mitsuda vibe, but then again, Uematsu's Lost Odyssey teaser site music also fooled me into thinking it was Mitsuda style. Uematsu himself would be a safe and obvious bet, but however it is, I won't say no to 2 CDs worth of stuff like this.

There should be more info about the actual game this month, too.

Someone put it on YouTube too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mooJxGDCdY

And here's some info about the setting, courtesy of Siliconera:

The Last Story takes place on Luli Island, which is a small continent surrounded by mountains. The defenses on Luli Island are apparently preparing for some sort of enemy invasion. Lord Aruganan, ruler of the island, is in search of magic as a valuable source of power. Although the rest of the island is suffering from corruption and decay, the town of Luli alone remains prosperous and wealthy, as is it surrounded by a mysterious magic. Due to this magic, the fate of the island is going to be changed forever.

On the blog, director Hironobu Sakaguchi mentions that The Last Story won’t be heavily influenced by sci-fi. Luli Island is exposed to an abundance of sunshine and materials like metal are in scarcity.

The story is very traditional Sakaguchi, but the setting sounds somewhat limited. Only one continent? Is Sakaguchi trying to do something Suikoden-like which takes place in a smaller geographical area instead of a scarcely populated "globe"? Of course, preliminary translated information like this could be misdirecting.

The previous update on the site was on the 11th, so maybe there will be something more on Wednesday/Thursday?

Boco Mar 15, 2010

Really excited and intrigued about this game. It's definitely one that I'll be pre-ordering. I've enjoyed all of Sakaguchi's games thus far (at least the one's I've played). At the very least, it's bound to be better than most of the JRPGs on the horizon.

Sami Mar 27, 2010

It looks like the updates are weekly as suspected. The latest one shows off some concept art of knights and soldiers:

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/slsj/

The more I listen to the music, the more it sounds like Mitsuda to me. Does Mitsuda have any other big project right now? Could this be it?

Boco Mar 27, 2010

I'm still sticking with Uematsu. The arrangement doesn't sound like him, but he hasn't been arranging as of late anyway. There are just some little details in the melody that have that Uematsu-vibe to them. I could be wrong though. My last major prediction was quite a bit off. ^.^;

Ramza Nov 18, 2010

The statement is Uematsu wrote about 40 songs for the game.

Who wants to bet there is more than 40 songs total in that game?

I wonder who else worked on it...

Boco Nov 18, 2010

I guess it depends on the game's length and scope. Perhaps they went for a more sparse soundtrack?

Honestly, I think you might be right though. Even FFIII had more than 40 tracks. XD

Herrkotowski Nov 18, 2010

40 might be the entire soundtrack. I mean, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey only had 53-56  tracks each. It could be sparser.

Cedille Nov 18, 2010

Didn't ever know Sakaguchi had some musical knowledge and his advice for Uematsu was so specified.

Sami Jan 29, 2011

The game was released in Japan and the music is already on YouTube. That must mean there's also an MP3 rip of it floating out there, right? Right?

There aren't a lot of tracks, but it's mostly pretty good. The soundtrack is out Feb 23.

Right!  If you can find the game itself (ahem) it's pretty easy to extract the music.  I haven't listened to much of it yet but I'm really loving the goofy tutorial music.  Uematsu is king at.. whatever genre that would be considered.

TerraEpon Jan 29, 2011

60s happy pop ^_^

And yes, that is indeed a kickin piece.

Amazingu Jan 30, 2011

I've been playing the game for the past couple of days and apart from the main theme, I'm finding the music to be discardable overall. And as has been said, there isn't even a whole lot of it.

The game itself is rather slow in building up, but it does keep getting more interesting.

Cedille Feb 7, 2011

Recent Uematsu apparently tends to compose a final battle theme which sounds like just a joke, but for some reason I'm loving Last Story's one, though even it will still turn off many listeners with its horrible synth sample and atrocious scream...

Yuck. I think that's *far* worse than his attempts for "Blue Dragon" and "Lost Odyssey." Just dreadful.

Yeah, without that I think I'd be cool with the track, but that is REALLY annoying.  Starting to worry about this OST, and I actually really quite like BD and LO.

Amazingu Feb 7, 2011

I'm quite disappointed with the whole package in general, to be honest.

I'm finding it hard to care about the game and its characters, and the music is really hardly noticeable when playing. This is probably my least favorite Mistwalker game after the horrible, horrible ASH.
