Y'know how some people have separate e-mail accounts for certain aspects of their lives, e.g., one for work, one for socializing, one for shopping, etc.?

Well, I'm one of those people...except now, I'm trying to consolidate a number of my e-mail accounts together, and discontinue accounts I don't use anymore.

The question being, how do I close out extraneous e-mail accounts on Gmail? I'm sure having a bunch of open accounts that aren't even used anymore, and are just being loaded up with spam, are posing a strain on Gmail's servers...

You don't. There is no such concept as "deleting" from the Net. Remove any personally identifying information on the account, forget the password, and move on.

At least I now know who to hold responsible when GMail's servers crash again. *facepalm*

Hmm... I know Bernie isn't talking about Hotmail but I can't help but think you could close an account. But it's been so long maybe I'm mistaken.
