There's been an emergence of digital reading and storage apparatuses, like Amazon's Kindle, and Apple's...whatever-the-hell they call it, but let me ask: Do you buy, keep and read digital books, and if so, how do you do it, what's the most cost-effective way to do it?

Me, I'd keep more books, but if you've become more familiar with me lately, I hate keeping carbon copies of anything I don't use routinely, especially when it takes up so much space.

Of course, I would go to the library just to borrow books, but I don't like deadlines looming overhead - I like to read at my own pace, so I can retain what I read, and in some cases, I'd like to actually keep a piece of literature, so I can refer back to it at a moment's notice, especially for quotes.

I want an e-book reader strictly for PDF's. There are some really cool physics abstracts with information I can't get anywhere else.

Like this one: http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/hep-ph/pdf/9506/9506229v1.pdf

I've been printing them out, but a few are 80+ pages, so I don't print those.

Damn it, I found myself cracking a smile at this one.  Kudos, Mike. ;)

Speaking of pop-ups, how awesome is this?

So, basically, we're saying that most of the stuff that's available on Kindle is just popular entertainment tripe? Like Stephen Colbert's latest book, or whatever?

Project Gutenberg is a project that takes books in the public domain and converts them to e-books.  So, you can download a lot of classic works for free.  If I was to ever get an e-reader, it would be for that purpose.

I actually liked Stephen Colbert's last book.

No, there are numerous classics you can download for the Kindle, and many of them are free.
The reason I am not interested in a Kindle right now is because I enjoy reading traditional books, and as for journals and articles, I want something I can print out. I don't think it's possible to print anything with the Kindle, and thus it has little interest to me at the moment.

cheers,

Sorry, I probably should've used the name of someone more innocuous. Who's a REALLY inane celebrity that I can insult without fear of backlash? Oh, right. Al Gore. There we go!

WELL, I should think one would get an eReader or small tablet PC so they DON'T have to print anything out! Reading things off my computer screen becomes tedious, because I can't hold it close up in front of me, and hunching over my desk poses strain on my back.
